Editorial Review:

The one-of-a-kind encyclopedia of natural, whole foods that shows you how to eat right and feel better.

To a large degree, the quality of what we eat determines our health, and many cultures understand that food is the best medicine for what ails us. Arranged alphabetically, fully cross-referenced and indexed, and illustrated with line drawings, The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia provides information on how to select, prepare, store, and use medicinally more than 1,000 common and uncommon whole foods, from acorn to zucchini and aduki (a healthful Japanese bean) to zapote (a tropical fruit). Sidebar anecdotes, unique recipes, historical background, and a complete glossary of terms also contribute to the book's modern, user-friendly format.

For three decades, Rebecca Wood has conducted workshops and seminars on whole foods cookery and the properties of foods according to Western, Ayurvedic, and Chinese models. The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia shares her wisdom with a new generation of readers at a time when the benefits of holistic medicine are being recognized by the entire medical community.

With a Foreword by Paul Pitchford, author of Healing with Whole Foods.

Wood received both the 1998 James Beard Award and the Julia Child/IACP Award for her latest book, The Splendid Grain

not the most colorful cookbook i've cooked from 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

i just started my vegetarian venture so this is a cookbook i picked up. the book gives really good side tips about food that are not common knowledge. i have tried a few of the recipes and they turned out fabulous. so no damage there. the only down side is there are absolutely no pictures of any of the recipes. so if your ok with cooking blindly then this is one for you.

got this for our godchild who changed her eating habits.she was very pleased.she was happy we gave her ideas for meals instead of talking her out of it,also made sure we bought her the needed vitamins her body needs for the change.

Great resource for recipes 5 out of 5 stars.

Just about all of the recipes in this book have ingredients anyone can find in their local grocery store and the instructions are clear and simple. I recommend this book to all my friends looking to add more vegetarian meals to their repertoire. I've been eating vegetarian for over 12 years, and this is my favorite veggie recipe book to date. All the recipes I've tried have been winners.

31 YEARS LATER 5 out of 5 stars.

I had my first child in February and shortly after my Mom gave me her all of her Mommy secrets... It was this book. I grew up eating all this stuff and doing all of these things and I loved every bit of it. Now that I have my own Baby it has been so wonderful to revisit the wonderful recipes from my childhood. Whats even better she left me all of her little notes of leave this out and add this here and there. I'm looking forward to using it as much as she did.

Good overall,... with some snags..... 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I have begun my journey with Candida Related Complex. This was the first book I purchased and I found that the inforamtion gets "jumbled up" from time to time. One section may say it's OK to eat a certain food, another sais it's not, and often it neglets to mention which foods are not to be eaten in the "elimination phase"... Recepies are alright, but many are not for the the elimination phase... Much of the ingredients are rather expensive and not always easily found locally (or only in healthfood stores). Overall,I found it to be a decent guide, but much more acurate information is needed on this condition.

Editorial Review:

What exactly can you eat if you have a yeast-related problem? Here, in The Yeast Connection Cookbook, are hundreds of answers to that question.

The Yeast Connection Cookbook begins with a discussion of yeast-related disorders and the important role diet plays in their management. It also provides general information on the effects--both positive and negative--that some common foods can have on yeast sufferers, and crucial instructions on detecting the specific foods to which you are particularly sensitive or allergic. The authors then present over 225 recipes--for breads, soups, entrées, desserts, and more--that eliminate most common food allergens while providing beneficial complex carbohydrates. Throughout, tips and suggestions guide you in adopting a diet that is both healthful and satisfying.

not afraid to cook anymore 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I wouldn't say I was an inexperienced cook . . . I'd say phobic. No, this might not be the cookbook for you if you're quite the gourmet and enjoy spending an hour or more in the kitchen to prepare a meal. But if you were never really taught how to cook and have spent most nights asking your partner, "Well, what do you want to do for dinner?" back and forth until someone orders delivery, then this might be just what you need.

I love this book and its companion, EatingWell Serves Two. I seem to have two types of cookbooks: healthy (such as the Mayo Clinic) and quick/easy (as in cookbooks that advertise how few ingredients each recipe will use). EatingWell's Hurry cookbooks are the only ones that combine both.

It's been a learning process for me. Sometimes I need to google ingredients (what are fennel seeds? Where will they be in the grocery store? What's a plum tomato?) or get new equipment (Where's the broiler pan? Oh, oops, I guess we don't have one), but that's a joy, because as I do these things step by step I know I am gaining knowledge and experience (and gear and ingredients).

So let's face it; if I can do these recipes, then they are easy enough to be in some kind of cooking for dummies cookbook, and yet they are super tasty and I'm not embarrassed to serve them, even to people who aren't married to me.

If I could be in an infomercial for these cookbooks I would. In my late 20's it was finally time for me to learn how to cook (and force myself to do it more than once a week), and I don't think I could have done it without these cookbooks.

Best book on the Glycemic Index I've read!! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My husband has a bad back and can't exercise, so the only way to control his weight gain over the years has to be through his diet. This poses problems with him being a meat and potato man who doesn't like fish, rice, or several vegetables. Several of the other books I've read or purchased seem to be full of fish and chicken recipes (anyone can lose weight if that's all they eat). I needed a way of changing the way we think about food and the way we eat, a lifestyle change that is manageable. The radical diets are limiting and most people gain the weight back once you stop because you can't follow them forever. The glycemic index is a lifestyle change that anyone can stick with. The other books also use alot of items you have to get from a gourmet shop, health food stores, or contain exotic items that are rather pricey and most of us would not eat. The Good Carb Cookbook contains recipes that most of us would eat on a daily basis anyway (who needs to purchase expensive meals through one of those dieting companies when you can make them yourself). 2/3 of her book explains what the glycemic index is, how it works, and what things effect the glycemic index of an item/meal. She talks about different kinds of oils, flours, grains, and explains alot of dietary information in terms that anyone can understand. She also explains better choices to lower the GI of a meal and things to add to lower the GI of a meal (such as addition of acid like lemon juice or vinegar) or items that have a fermenting process such as sour dough or yogurt or buttermilk. How about using thick rolled oats in a meatloaf instead of corn flakes or crackers?

I can't sing more praises or state more facts than anyone else who has read this book and took the time to comment on it. This is a must read item for anyone who is serious about improving their health through proper diet

Editorial Review:

For anyone following a low-carb diet, here are more than 200 delicious recipes featuring foods that are low on the glycemic index.
