Editorial Review:

IBS is one of our nation's most untalked-about ailments, but millions of people - mostly women - suffer from the debilitating condition, one that must be controlled primarily through diet. Contrary to what may sufferers believe, eating for IBS does not mean deprivation, never going to restaurants, boring food, or an unhealthily limited diet. It does mean cutting out such trigger foods as red meat, dairy, most fats, caffeine, alcohol, and insoluble fiber. Heather Van Vorous, who has suffered from IBS since age 9 and gradually learned how to control her IBS symptoms through dietary modifications, collects here 175 recipes she has created over 20 years. IBS sufferers will be thrilled to discover that they can enjoy traditional homestyle cooking, ethnic foods, rich desserts, snacks, and party foods - and don't have to cook weird or special meals for themselves while their families follow a "normal" diet. Eating with IBS will forever revolutionize the way people with IBS eat - and live.

Cheaper than the food court (hopefully) 5 out of 5 stars.

This is designed for a beginning cook and so, quite sensibly begins with some basic advice on stocking a kitchen with equipment and staples. Cooking terms are explained and safety information is also given.

The recipes are clearly written (prep time is not given but it would be difficult for the authors to estimate how long it would take a beginning cook) and cover a nice range of difficulty and interests. I particularly liked that vegetarian recipes were included and that all recipes had nutrition information listed, both necessities for a (sometime) vegetarian who is usually on a diet.

I bought this for my college student daughter in hopes of inspiring her to cook for herself, at least part of the time, instead of eating out. For others who are thinking about this as a gift for a student I would suggest adding some of the basic equipment or staples needed.

Editorial Review:

In less time and for less money than it takes to order pizza, you can make it yourself! Three harried but heatlh-conscious college students compiled and tested this collection of more than 200 tasty, hearty, inexpensive recipes anyone can cook— yes, anyone! Whether you're short on cash, fearful of fat, counting your calories, or just miss home cooking, The Healthy College Cookbook offers everything you need to make good food yourself.

Tasty & Easy 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book after trying 2 raw food cookbooks. They were very time consuming and needed expensive ingredients. This book is a breath of fresh air. The recipes are easy & tasty. I like that the ingredients are not expensive. These are recipes I can use daily.

Editorial Review:

Cookbooks need not—indeed, should not—involve cooking, say the authors of this authoritative, beautifully illustrated book. And they should know. Sergei and Vayla Boutenko bring fifteen years’ experience to this collection of scrumptious, sophisticated recipes and comprehensive guide to the raw life.

Fresh covers the whole range of recipes, including savory dishes, desserts, fermented foods, drinks, and wild foods. Techniques common to the recipes are introduced and clearly explained, including an inventory of uncommon fruits and how to handle and prepare them, as well as an immersion into the five basic flavors and the herbs, fruits, vegetables, and grains that help chefs bring out each flavor best. The authors introduce the three stages of adaptation to this lifestyle and provide a concise review of minimal equipment requirements and ideal appliance additions for the well-stocked raw kitchen.

Editorial Review:

Learn how to eat right after weight loss surgery.

In the past decade or so, there have been explosive increases in both the incidence of severe obesity and weight loss; bariatric-surgery. It has been shown that the incidence of bariatric surgical procedures has increased over 600% in the last decade. It is estimated that approximately 200,000 Americans - and another 200,000 adults world wide - will undergo a bariatric operation in 2006. This dramatic increase in operative cases is in part a testament to the safety and efficacy of the currently performed surgical procedures including the roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, and the biliopancreatic diversion - with or without duodenal switch.

Weight loss surgery is not a magic bullet, but with life-long positive lifestyle habits, including a healthy diet, you may be able to enjoy vibrant health you have never felt before. Once the surgery is over, there is a lifelong maintenance program to ensure not only that you keep the weight off, but that your body gets the right balance of nutrients. When you can only eat as much food as you can hold in your hand at a sitting, it is vital that you are eating the right foods and taking the correct supplements to nourish your body for life. What sets Recipes After Weight Loss-Surgery apart from previous cookbooks is the combined expertise of Margaret Furtado, MS, RD, LD-N and Lynette Schultz, a combination of almost 40 years' experience in clinical nutrition and the culinary arts, respectively. Together, they will help you navigate your way through the sometimes turbulent waters after your weight loss surgery, and will provide you with general clinical guidelines after your procedure, as well as helpful hints for easing your transition from surgery to your new, healthy lifestyle. With sections on home entertaining and eating-on-the-run, Ms. Furtado and Ms. Schultz will help you to feel like a person, rather than a patient, after your life-altering weight loss surgery.

Super and natural 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

"Super Natural Cooking" is an exciting and tasty introduction the world of whole foods. The book has an unusual arrangement. Rather than lumping appetizers, entrees, soups, salads, and desserts into sections - the book is rather arranged like a course on natural foods cooking. The book begins with instructions for building a natural foods pantry - what foods to include and what to avoid, including flours, oils, sweeteners, spices and seasonings.

Then she moves on to whole grains, beginning first with information about the different types of grains (helpful because many may be unfamiliar), she then moves on to recipes. There are baked goods like Seed-Crusted Amaranth Biscuits and Espresso Banana Muffins; soups like Toasted Wheat Germ Soup and Creamy Wild Rice Soup. The Spring Minestrone with Brown Rice made with fresh asparagus and snap peas has been a regular for us on Fridays when I get my box of produce from the local CSA. We also loved the Risotto-Style Barley made with crème fraiche and lemon zest.

Next, Swanson encourages us to "Cook by Color." This section is all about fruits and vegetables - brimming with essential phytonutrients (don't worry if you're not sure what they are, it's explained in the book.) Recipes include Baked Purple Hedgehog Potatoes (your kids will love these), Red Indian Carrot Soup, Curried Tofu Scramble, and Crema de Guacamole with Crunch Topopos.

If those foods weren't healthy enough, the next section teaches you to "Know Your Superfoods:" alliums, cruciferous vegetables, beans and legumes, nuts and seeds, sea vegetables, sprouts, tea, and yogurt. Dishes include Beluga Lentil Crostini, Sprouted Garbanzo Burgers, and Golden Crusted Brussels Sprouts. My family absolutely loved the Creamy Cauliflower Soup.

Of course even natural foods eaters love their desserts and there a plenty of good ones here as Swanson presents a section on natural sweeteners. There are recipes for Thin Mint Cookies, Spiced Caramel Corn and Ginger-Amaranth Shortbread. The Dairyless Chocolate Mousse is so rich and decadent, no one will believe it was made with tofu. The biggest hit of the desserts for us - I've already made it several times - was the Raspberry Curd Swirl Cake. My gosh, it was good. I couldn't find Raspberry Curd at Trader Joe's so I used Lemon Curd and it was wonderful. Really, really great.

Whether you are already into natural foods like I am (but there were ingredients here I've never tried like wild rice flour, teff and farro) or completely lost in a natural foods store but want to know more, this book will work for you. The recipes are very "normal" and nonthreatening - like chocolate chip cookies with a bit of mesquite flour millet-fried "rice." In other words, comfortable favorites with a little twist. Swanson does an excellent job of explaining the ingredients (and offering substitutions if you are unable to find some of the more uncommon ones). This books is vegetarian - many recipes use dairy products but there are some great vegan recipes as well.

Awesome, healthy, but not for beginner cooks! 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I was browsing through the reviews and noticed a few bad ones. The points that stood out were that the recipes were not for beginner cooks, ingredients were difficult to find or "unheard of," and the recipes didn't taste good. While I see where those reviewers are coming from, please don't let the bad reviews deter you from checking out this book!

I have been cooking for myself since I was a teen, so to me the recipes are pretty simple! I've also heard of and cooked with most of the ingredients. If some of the ingredients seem mysterious, consider that a reason to try them out. I do not eat red meat or pork, so I stick to the vegetable and seafood recipes. The "half the fuss" part of the title is true. The book really simplifies things *for me*. The "double the taste" part is a lot more subjective. This is touted as a healthy cookbook though, so you don't expect the world if you're used to junk. I find most of the recipes delicious, and I've been using this cookbook a lot.... and it's not even mine!

Someone also mentioned that the ingredients were pricey. That can be the case with healthy food sometimes. Better quality can sometimes mean higher prices. It may help to check out sales and to buy things in bulk. Just a though.

Editorial Review:

The first cookbook from best-selling author Jonny Bowden!

Jonny Bowden's The Healthiest Meals on Earth contains recipes for more than sixty dishes and drinks that use nutritious and healthy cooking methods. Forty of these dishes will combine to create ten different "poly-meals", specially crafted meals that contain key nutrients found to promote long-term health. They include Sweet and Thai Spicy Shrimp and Fruits, Persian Chicken with Autumnal Accompaniments, and the "iron booster" of Tender Calf's Liver and Sweet Beets. A "Healthiest Holiday Meal" features Citrus Stuffed Turkey, Zippy Fruit Salsa, and Sweet Potato Pie. The poly-meals are designed to be eaten three-to-five times a week.

Another ten recipes are not part of the poly-meal structure; instead they are one-pot meals that include Slow-Cooker Chicken Curry, Miso Bean Soup, and Venison Stew. A chapter on drinks will include nutritious smoothies, so-called "green drinks", and others. Jonny will provide healthy cooking tips throughout the book, as well as an analysis of the foods in each recipe. Side dishes, such as Cold Strawberry Soup and Veggie Slaw with Flax Oil, and desserts, such as Raw Chocolate Fondue, are also featured.

This book pairs well with Bowden's successful 150 Healthiest Foods, and can even be used as a companion cookbook.

Terrible cookbook if you're actually following the GI Diet 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I started following the GI Diet (Rick Gallop's book in case there are other versions). I'm not crazy about all of his recipes, so I wanted to get another cookbook that would give me some additional recipes that I could use while on the diet. The cover of "The Low GI Diet Cookbook" even says "The World's Foremost Authorities on the Glycemic Index". Hah! As I flip through the pages, every recipe that calls for a sweetener uses honey, maple syrup, sugar, brown sugar, and even confectioner's sugar! There aren't even any conversion charts on how to substitute with agave nectar, stevia, or xylitol. My biggest gripe is with the sweets, but I'm not thrilled that many other recipes call for non-green-light ingredients.

Editorial Review:

A fine job by Bill Henderson.... 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My wife was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2001 and succumbed to her cancer in March 2005. I only discovered Bill's first book six months before she died and had multiple conversations with him at the time. He was compassionate and patient and knowledgeable.

This book builds on his first one and is the best book on the market in terms of letting the reader know about the causes of cancer, why the pharma industry fights non-toxic approaches and what resources and approaches are available to the layperson who is struggling with cancer or is the caregiver.

I wish I had known about these approaches earlier. I have myself begun to research the role of sound vibrations in healing and have just released a healing chant called The Magic of Gayatri.

Kudos to Bill Henderson for putting this valuable resource together!

Editorial Review:

Bill Henderson has helped thousands of people all over the world heal their cancers. This latest book gives you a precise regimen for self-treatment along with extensive information on other resources now available to you.

Editorial Review:

More than half a million people live with multiple sclerosis, yet conventional medicine still has little to offer patients. There is no known cure-and even recent breakthroughs in drug therapy do not work to control many of the symptoms or promise any degree of recovery.

But there is an alternative to drugs that can stop and reverse the ravaging symptoms of MS-the MS Recovery Diet. As this book explains, there are five common food triggers that can set off the symptoms of MS-dairy, grains containing glutens, legumes, eggs, and yeast. Yet because MS is such a complex disease, other foods play a role, as culprits or aides. The MS Recovery Diet explains the background, science, and development of this treatment in one source for the first time, and shows readers how to pinpoint their specific problem foods and sensitivities. It also offers more than one hundred simple recipes, as well as strategies to improve digestion, balance the immune system, and repair the body's myelin-crucial steps toward healing the body.

Both of the authors, Ann D. Sawyer and Judith E. Bachrach, who had been diagnosed and disabled by multiple sclerosis, have experienced incredible recovery on the diet. Within the first three months on this program, Sawyer was able to stop the disease progression and begin to walk short distances with an even gait. Bachrach, whose health has been declining because of MS for thirty- eight years, regained feeling in her toes in one week and after one year on the diet, has stopped taking all medication. This book shares the treatment plan that has dramatically changed their lives, and the lives of others who have discovered it. With inspiring personal stories throughout, it offers real help- and hope-for sufferers of MS.
