Editorial Review:

A Taste of the Past is an entertaining reconstruction of the daily life and household of Therese (Riza) Baruch (1851-1938), the great-grandmother of the author, Andras Koerner. Based on an unusually complete cache of letters, recipes, personal artifacts, and eyewitness testimony, Koerner describes in loving detail the domestic life of a nineteenth-century Hungarian Jewish woman, with special emphasis on the meals she served her family.

Based on Riza's letters, part one offers an imaginative sketch of growing up in a religious middle-class family in the 1860s and 70s in an industrial town in western Hungary. Part one also describes Riza's reactions to the dilemmas posed by the early signs of Jewish assimilation. In part two, the heart of the book, Riza has married, moved to a smaller town near the Austrian border, and become the central figure of a large household. Koerner recreates a typical day in the life of Riza and her family, peppering his narrative with recipes of the food she served for breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, afternoon coffee-and-cake, and the much more modest evening meal.

Riza's family was religious, and Koerner also describes the special foods (pike in sour aspic, cholent, apple-matzo kugel, and much more) she served to celebrate the Sabbath and the six major Jewish holidays. Short introductions to the recipes describe the evolution of the dishes through the centuries, their role in Jewish culture, and how cultural influences and religious traditions shaped Riza's cooking.

More than 125 evocative pen-and-ink illustrations bring Riza's story and her food to life. A Taste of the Past offers an enchanting look at Jewish daily life in western Hungary in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, a time when middle-class Jews were increasingly assimilated into mainstream Hungarian life and culture. Such small-town Jewish life had completely disappeared due to the Holocaust. Koerner's book revives this lost world and invites the reader to be a guest in Riza's house to watch her caring for her family, shopping, cooking, and preparing for the holidays. By offering easy-to-follow updated versions of her recipes, the book also allows readers to savor Riza's dishes and desserts in their own kitchens, thus completing this experience of a visit to the past.

The best cookbook I own; fabulous, fabulous! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I borrowed my mother's copy of this book...and still haven't given it back. If you've ever wanted to know how to make the perfect Jewish chicken soup, matzoh balls, brisket, yummy chicken dishes, and the perfect kugel, this book will be your guide. Haven't figured out that perfect dish to bring to the potluck? This book's got plenty of delectable ideas! I've been frustrated with other Jewish cookbooks that offer confusing recipes with strange ingredients, but this one keeps everything simple and delicious. It's by far the cookbook I turn to most during the week and when guests come over. This book also includes a large array of kosher Chinese recipes (from sweet & sour chicken to kung pao chicken & beef). We are not kosher, but love all the recipes nonetheless.

The Best Kosher Cookbook You'll Ever Need 5 out of 5 stars.

Terrific traditional and contemporary cooking, with a lighter California twist. THIS IS THE BEST KOSHER COOKBOOK -- MAYBE THE BEST COOKBOOK OF ANY KIND WHATSOEVER -- THAT YOU MIGHT EVER OWN. Every recipe works, because the people who put it together genuinely triple-tested each entry, and if it didn't get A-plusses from all three cooks, it didn't get in. I probably own 50 cookbooks, and this is one of the top three I use! Try the chocolate marble squares, the sesame chicken, the apricot noodle kugel, the gefilte fish, the chicken soup, the honey cake . . .

Editorial Review:

Maggie Glezer, the uniquely qualified, totally obsessed certified bread baker who teaches and writes about bread for both laypeople and professionals, set off across the country in pursuit of the best breads and best bakers in America. And she returned with the goods—impeccable recipes that reproduce the excellence and craft of the best breads being made today, scaled down and written for a home kitchen.

But in addition to the recipes, she offers sumptuous color photography and portraits of the bakers, in words and pictures, that tell the story of America's artisan bread movement, from the wheat breeders in Kansas to a gristmill in Rhode Island, and specialty bakers from Berkeley, California, to Long Island City, New York.

This is a book to bake from, to learn from, to read for the sheer pleasure of realizing the devotion and mastery that go into the making of our best daily bread, whether it be a dark rye, a Neapolitan pizza, a baguette, or a bialy.

Whether your interest is epicurean, avocational, or vocational, you will be guided by step-by-step instructions detailing the best professional methods. Each recipe is categorized by skill level from beginner to advanced, and there are also helpful mail-order sources for ingredients and equipment.

To savor the crust, crumb, and aroma of these breads fresh out of your home oven is to be touched by the soul of the specialty baker and his or her passion for excellence.

If these truly great breads don't lay waste to the old adage that man can't live by bread alone, then nothing will.

Editorial Review:

Since early colonial times in America, Jewish southerners have been tempted by delectable regional foods. Because some of these foods--including pork and shellfish--have been traditionally forbidden to Jews by religious dietary laws, southern Jews face a special predicament. In a culinary journey through the Jewish South, Arkansas native Marcie Cohen Ferris explores how southern Jews embraced, avoided, and adapted southern food and, in the process, have found themselves at home.

From colonial Savannah and Charleston to Civil War era New Orleans and Natchez, from New South Atlanta to contemporary Memphis and across the Mississippi and Arkansas Deltas, Ferris examines the expressive power of food throughout southern Jewish history. She demonstrates how southern Jews reinvented traditions as they adjusted to living in a largely Christian world where they were bound by regional rules of race, class, and gender.

Featuring a trove of photographs, Matzoh Ball Gumbo also includes anecdotes, oral histories, and more than thirty recipes to try at home. Ferris's rich tour of southern Jewish foodways shows that, at the dining table, Jewish southerners created a distinctive religious expression that reflects the evolution of southern Jewish life.

A Converts' culinary guide to Judaism 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Last year my sister gave me Fast and Festive Meal..as a Chanakah gift as I was converting to Judaism and had little knowledge of how to cook jewishly. This book is absolutely amazing. Wonderful meal suggestions that have allowed me to incorporate Jewish eating into my new life as a Jew with the attendant rituals. What I find most attractive are her suggestions on the timing of preparations and the possibilities for freezing.

I have had this book since 1998 and it simply makes fantastic recipes. Not everyone is a hit, and the some of the deserts are too difficult, but really, my copy is stained, tattered, the binding is both taped up and broken.

Good basic guide to traditional Jewish cooking. 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Along with The Joy of Cooking for everyday basic cooking, I learned to prepare tradiditional Ashkenazic (Eastern European) Jewish dishes from Love and Knishes when it was first published 40 years ago when I was a newly-wed. The recipes and preparation instructions in Love and Knishes are simple, the ingredients are usually staples and the commentary is very funny, even if now viewed as, perhaps, stereotypical. The recipes are easily adaptable to today's guidelines to healthier (lower fat content) guidelines. I'm giving this as a gift to my soon to be new daughter-in-law. If your mom didn't keep kosher or prepare traditional dishes for holidays, sabbath etc. then Love and Knishes is a good place to start learning.

Can't beat it for good old favorites 5 out of 5 stars.

Some of the directions were a bit complicated to follow, or didn't match what I knew the recipies to be. However, for the most part, this is right out of my memories of my great Nana!

Best Jewish cookbook! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My mom received this little cookbook for her wedding 40 years ago, so these were the Jewish recipes I grew up on in my household. I have continued her tradition in using this as my main source of Jewish recipes. People always tell me I make the best matzah balls and latkes they've ever tasted, and I attribute that 100 percent to tips in this cookbook. A previous reviewer mentioned the noodle kugel and stuffed cabbage recipes as well - both of which my mom became famous for!
