Bryanna Clark Grogan kicks butt in the kitchen! 5 out of 5 stars.

EXCELLENT! A must have. I have been vegan for a little over 7 months now and this is the first book I've found that is consistently good, fast, healthy, economical, and so delicious that even my non-vegan husband didn't pull a face when I presented him with the carrot-oat patties and brown gravy. Recipes for substitutes for egg, meat, fish, cream, and cheese are found throughout the text (the Melty Pizza Cheeze is mild and not disgusting like a lot of the faux vegan subs)as well as quick meal suggestions. I own a few other vegan recipe books and, although they have beautiful recipes, I find that they are not fast or simple enough for the everday- gotta -get- the- meal- on-while-kids-are-screaming- life that I lead. Some say the recipes take 30 minutes-I don't think that matters. If it is under 45 minutes then it is a quick meal. Gourmet vegan menus can take hours sometimes. This book will be the one with gravy splatters and juice stains. I highly reccommend it.

Editorial Review:

Get in and out of the kitchen FAST with tempting and nutritious dishes from vegetarian innovator, Bryanna Clark Grogan. Most of the recipes are based on the Mediterranean/Asian model using lots of grains, fruits and vegetables. Nutritional analyses accompany each recipe.

Recipes that even the Kids will Love 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have just about every healthy cookbook on the market. My family always tells me which recipes are "keepers" and which ones are not. The "keepers" I write down in a seperate book of favorite recipes. Our favorite recipe book is now mostly filled with Holly Clegg's recipes. They are delicious and even your kids won't miss the fat, I promise! This is a definite must have for anyone wanting to make a lifestyle change for the entire family. No More FAD diets for us!! I only wish that I would have found this book years ago!

Editorial Review:

Easy, fast, and so delicious!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent cookbook for anyone wanting to eat healthy, but not spend hours in the kitchen. The results are extra tasty and there is no guilt because every recipe has the calories, fat, etc. printed on the page! I have had success with every recipe, and it is by no means a sacrifice to eat these healthy dishes. I checked this book out from the library, and after making several recipes I had to buy a copy to keep! Get a copy today if you want fast, easy, and very delicious recipes!

Misleading book title 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I was surprised and annoyed at how many recipes there were for many more servings per recipe than two. This book is called Healthy Cooking For Two and often strays far from two servings. This book was not correctly titled and was at best deceptive.

Good choice! 4 out of 5 stars.

My husband and I have made several recipes from this book, and they've all been very good. Directions are easy to follow and the meals are tasty. When we're cooking for more than just the two of us, it's easy enough to just double the recipes. We like to watch what we eat, so it's great to have a cookbook that includes calorie count and nutrition information -- most cookbooks I've seen don't do that. The one thing I would like to have seen the author do differently is to include the nutritional information based on weight (eg. 3 oz. portion) or a measured portion (eg. 2 cups), rather than just "per serving." But overall, it's a great book.

Fast, Healthy, Delicious...and You'll Shed a Few Pounds Too! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I have owned this book for several months now but not until recently have I taken it out and actually used some of the recipes. Well actually, I have taken up Weight Watchers again and I was looking for some recipes that wouldn't remind me that I was dieting. I just finished a Garden-Fresh Tuna Salad Sandwich (4 points) that was just packed with flavor with just a scant 3 grams of fat. The photograph of the sandwich is what caught my eye and that is one of the big selling points of this and other Pillsbury cookbooks.

The book begins with a comprehensive discussion called, 'A Guide to Healthier Eating'. Here you will find information about the soon to be amended Food Pyramid and just what is meant by a 'serving'. The authors then give the reader the 'Seven Steps to a Healthy Diet' which include suggestions for improving your food intake. Additionally, there is a glossary of health and food-related terms, some suggestions for using the nutritional information included in the book and some suggested menus combining some of the recipes.

Like many cookbooks, Fast and Healthy covers the culinary experience from Appetizers to Desserts. Aside from the many beautiful photos, the book is replete with many sidebars. These give the user tips that will enhance not only the recipe, but the expertise of the cook as well. Nutritional information for each recipe is provided and dietary exchanges for diabetics are also included. Weight Watchers clients like myself can easily calculate the Winning Points from the information provided and most of the recipes will fall into weight loss plans. For the chocolate lover, who can resist Cocoa Mocha Brownies or Double Chocolate Chip Cookies....two and one point respectively???

As you can tell, I like this book. I am a big fan of Pillsbury's cookbooks and this one is going to be a good friend over the next three months...and well beyond!

A Whole Systems Approach 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 27 people found this review helpful.

My only complaint with this book is its title, "Low Fat Living." It goes far beyond that. This is really the "whole mind, whole body" approach to weight control and more. This book seems to be a collection of everything that the authors could find that contributes to weight loss, organized in an interesting and integrative manner. I particularly loved the study that showed that people watching television burn up fewer calories than people sitting and watching a blank screen. As a woman at age 53, I was wondering if I could ever again shed pounds. My old approaches didn't work. The one thing that I knew was that people who successfuly do lose weight and keep it off do so through making life-style changes and they tailor what they do to their own bodies. This book enabled me to have a comprehensive understanding of what those changes needed to be concerning (1) nutrition, (2) exercise (including simply increasing motion), (3) water, (4) sleep, and (5) stress management. To my surprise, stress management has actually been the most challenging-and perhaps the most rewarding. I am no longer in the "diet" mentallity. I am now concentrating on making the small changes--trying this and that until I find ways that appeal to me and that I can sustain--and these are adding up to large changes that affect not just my weight, but my general health. Through this process and over several months, I am finding that my body and mind are changing in what they want. It is like my whole system is resetting to different standards. I'm beginning to actually be drawn to vegetables and whole grains, walking the dog, and skipping TV. Who'd'a thunk?

Great Cookbook for Low Fat Recipes, Somewhat Pricey 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a very nice little cookbook, with lots of good recipes and great illustrations. I've made many of the recipes and have been pleased with the results. Given the size of the cookbook and number of recipes you get, however, it is a little pricey.

Should be "some things" low carb 2 out of 5 stars.
41 of 42 people found this review helpful.

Some of the recipes in this book are keepers, but a lot of them make you wonder if they've really thought through the low-carb idea. For instance, there's a recipe for "Glazed Bananas." Bananas by themselves are off-limits for most low-carbers, but this recipe suggests adding honey to the mix. At 20 carbs per serving this treat is described as "moderate."

Nutritional reporting is minimal. No calorie counts are reported for recipes. Carb counts include fiber, and fiber is not reported on its own, so good luck figuring out net impact carbs.

Dana Carpender's 500 Low-Carb Recipes is a much better bet.

Editorial Review:

As people continue to struggle with their addictions to high-carb, high-sugar meals and snacks, the Low-Carb Cookbook presents a healthy alternative in simple easy-to-follow, recipes. Carb-rated recipes help readers create the perfect meal suited to their specific dietary needs and tastes. Includes dietary information such as calorie counts, fat grams, carbohydrates, and proteins for each recipe.

Editorial Review:

A Different Direction in Cooking from America's Favorite Chef

Chef Paul Prudhomme, America's most innovative chef, invites you to take a Fork in the Road, a journey toward a different way of cooking. If your goal is to produce great-tasting, flavorful dishes that everyone will enjoy, yet are still good for you, then this is the cookbook for you!

Chef Paul's new book offers not only recipes but a model for anyone who wants to modify his or her cooking to minimize the use of less healthful ingredients, yet retain the rich taste and texture that make them so delicious.

For instance, he uses puréed dried beans and reduced fruit juices to create viscosity and enhance flavors. Both add an enormous amount of richness with virtually no fat. Chef Paul provides you with specific recipes to show you how these ingredients work, and encourages you to try them with all your favorite dishes.

To make rich, flavorful sauces and gravies for great-tasting meat, poultry, or fish--without a drop of oil, butter, shortening, or other fat--he has developed recipes in which dry flour is browned before adding it to the dish. And he always tells you to start with a hot pan, so you can "bronze," or "caramelize," an ingredient without any added fat. These techniques will make all your food taste better--new recipes as well as your favorite standbys.

Perhaps the most exciting portion of this book is the chapter on Magic Brightening Broths. These delicious broths are based upon defatted stocks, and get extra goodness from carefully balanced seasonings that enhance but don't overwhelm the flavors of foods cooked in them. Chef Paul envisions that once you've discovered how easy and enjoyable Magic Brightening is, you and your friends and family will want to cook this way several times a month.

From breads and breakfasts, through main and side dishes, to desserts and snacks, Chef Paul has streamlined his favorite recipes. He's taken out as much fat as possible, leaving the texture, the richness, and the taste for which he's famous. This is not a diet book, but one dedicated to healthful ways to cook.
