Editorial Review:

As cardiac patients, dieters, and just about anyone interested in maintaining good health can tell you, "fat free" too often means "flavor free." With The Garden Variety Cookbook and The Low-Cholesterol Olive oil cookbook, Sarah Schlesinger proved there's no reason why good food and good diet can't go hand in hand, and in her latest recipe collection she does so again, with distinction.

500 Fat-Free Recipes is the only cookbook to offer convenient, delicious, nonfat recipes each with one gram of fat or less-as well as a complete guide to reducing the fat in your diet. Finally, here's a one-stop resource for healthy eating.

Schlesinger began a dramatic reduction of her family's fat and cholesterol intake ten years ago as part of a program to reverse her husband's chronic heart disease. Finding hundreds of lowfat recipes-but very few nonfat recipes-she began her own culinary experiments. The result is a remarkable collection of dishes utilizing the freshest produce, zesty seasonings, and unusual combinations instead of added fat and fat-laden ingredients. Here is a plethora of prize edibles for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack time. You'll find Pear-Cinnamon Muffins, Baked French Toast, Spinach Fettucini with ShiitakeTomato Sauce, Red Pepper Mini-Pizzas, Black Bean Lasagna, Cocoa Cake-all with one gram of fat or less. There's even a special section on dressings, sauces, and relishes.

Schlesinger also offers the tools you need to manage daily fat consumption. She explains the role of fat as necessary nutrient and potential health hazard, shows how to estimate how much fat you truly need, and includes tips on how to eat out on a low-fat diet, make the most of frozen meals, season dishes without fat, and shop for nonfat products. A nutritional-content analysis follows each recipe. With Schlesinger's help, you can control the fat in your diet (and still occasionally indulge in the higher-fat foods you crave)

Here are five hundred delectable reasons to get with the program and start to safeguard your family's well-being today. The recipes in 500 Fat-Free Recipes are so good, people won't even suspect they're healthy!

Good, but "The Complete Cooking Light" is even better. 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I love the Cooking Light cookbooks and magazine. For those of you unfamiliar with them, their cookbooks are well-organized, contain appealing photographs of many of the recipes, and include a wide variety of food types, including meatless dishes for vegetarians. In addition, most of the recipes are not overly complicated. I like too cook, but I am by no means an expert. If you're in the same boat, have no fear. You can handle most of the recipes in this book. In addition, they include helpful tips and photographs in sections where the recipes are a little bit more complicated. And for those of us who are health-conscious, they also include a thorough nutritional analysis in fine print after every recipe (e.g. calories, fat, fiber, etc.). Most importantly, the recipes are INTERESTING and DELICIOUS. It sounds like a cliche, but no one will know that the food is from a "light" cookbook unless you tell them.

This book is no exception. It contains the editors' picks of their tried & true best recipes over 10 years. While it is a very good cookbook, however, I do like "The Complete Cooking Light" better. It contains many more recipes and, thus, greater variety. If you can only buy one, buy "The Complete Cooking Light." If possible, though, buy both!

Editorial Review:

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Cooking Light magazine, Oxmoor House has compiled 300 of the top rated recipes from the first decade of issues. From this collection of the "best of the best" light recipes, the Cooking Light staff reveals the top five recipes of the decade. 117 color photos.

Editorial Review:

If a skimpy salad doused with a tasteless dressing is your idea of lowfat dining, hold on to your calorie counter. Lowfat cooking has come a long way. In fact, many of your high-calorie food favorites have an enticing, healthier equivalent in a lowfat version. Think chili. Potato pancakes. Or even cheesecake. It’s true. If done right, bite for bite, lowfat cooking can be as generous in flavor as its high-fat counterpart. And once you (and your body) have begun to sample the benefits of a lowfat menu, chances are you’ll turn lowfat cooking into a permanent lifestyle change.

With the help of Lynn Fischer, celebrated host of two TV cooking shows, Lowfat Cooking For Dummies helps you prepare meals worthy of a high-class health spa. In practically no time, you’ll see how simple and fun it is to slenderize your kitchen pantry and get your cooking regimen in gear. From finding hidden fats to reading labels, the book gives you the skinny on:

  • Cholesterol, saturated fats, trans fatty acids—what they are and where they come from
  • What “lowfat,” “fat-free,” and “reduced fat” really mean
  • Tips on stocking a lowfat pantry—including what canned and packaged foods to keep (including pretzels, popcorn, chips, and cookies!)
  • What oils, condiments, and flavorings to use—including a table of oils indicating saturated fat content and a comprehensive list of herbs and their uses
  • Meat, poultry, fish, and eggs—tips on finding sources of lowfat red meat, what lean really means, and telling “good” eggs from “bad”

Plus Lowfat Cooking For Dummies brings you quickly up to speed on the joys of lowfat cooking—making your transition into a lowfat menu as delicious as it is painless. You’ll reexperience old favorites like French Toast or a BLT or Oatmeal Raisin Cookies and discover how cutting calories in no way impairs taste. And you’ll get a fresh reinvigorating take on traditionally healthy salads, as well as a host of entrees:

  • One-pot Soups and Casseroles—including Chicken Soup with Vegetables, Lentil Soup, Chili, and Pork and Garbanzo Bean Stew
  • Fish and shellfish—including Cod with Ginger-Orange Sauce, Herbed Mahi Mahi, and Shrimp and Crab Gumbo
  • Meat and poultry—including Meat Loaf, Sweet and Sour Pork, and Roast Chicken
  • Sandwiches—including Chicken Salad, Deviled Ham, Egg Salad, Feta Cheese Hamburgers, and Grilled Cheese

The book is chockfull of hints on how to turn usually high-fat fare like Hollandaise Sauce and White Sauce into something light and tasty. Desserts such as Strawberry Cheesecake and Peach and Blackberry Tart can, at last, be enjoyed as a guilt-free pleasure. Brimming with suggestions for healthy, lowfat eating on every page.

The healthiest and best tasting 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 29 people found this review helpful.

I've never done this-write a review. But someone gave this book only 2 stars, and that really bothers me. The author's other baking books, now almost impossible to find, were very highly rated, and rightly, and this one is the best of them all-and comprehensive.
Oh, yes, there are a few ingredients you'll need to buy at a health food store. BUT, well worth the trip.
Bake up a batch of her wonderful muffins, and watch your kids devour them as mine did. I made a batch of the apple pecan, by choice, to start my family off on a cross-country trip-they are special.
The cookies are unbelievable. The baked goods too.
There are many ideas for substitutions, and many ideas for those special needs-like diabetes, coronary artery disease, allergies (the wheat-free, egg-free, sugar-free, low-fat, etc.) AND everything not only tastes good, but also is good for you, loaded with nuts, seeds, whole grains, fruits, vegetables....
Easy to follow instructions, flawless recipes. Delicious results, for those of us who don't eat white bread. For those who do, expand your horizons.
Really, this book is a stand out in health-oriented baking-I should know, I've bought them all. I can promise you two things: one, you will not like every recipe, some you won't even try; and two, you will love most of the recipes and find yourself making them again and again.

Editorial Review:

From the author of the spectacularly successful Lean and Lovin' It, a brawny collection of big-flavored, fat-reduced recipes for men who love to eat. A once overweight guy who never met a food he didn't love, Don Mauer learned the hard way that most low-fat cookbooks don't appeal to meat-and-potatoes taste buds and come with skimpy portions that may work for New York fashion models but leave men hungry. This cookbook is different, written for men by a real guy with a big appetite. The 175 easy-to-make recipes - Smokin' Chili Pepper Cheeseburgers, Seemingly Sinful Fat-Free Roasted Garlic Whipped Potatoes, Chocolate Chocolate-Chip Pie, Fresh Blueberry Cobbler - are based on Mauer's own favorites. The guy-sized portions get 20 percent or less of their calories from fat, and each recipe comes with a full nutritional analysis, including the amount of saturated fat. A Guy's Guide to Great Eating will end the arguments in the kitchen between men who insist on eating what they love and the people who love them.

Low-fat & low-calorie, easy delicious recipes 5 out of 5 stars.
32 of 32 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful cookbook featuring delicious & nutritious recipes. Most recipes are easy-to-make & use common ingredients. All are low in fat with no recipe containing more than 4 grams per serving.

The author starts out by explaining the miracle of yogurt cheese & how to make it. She also discusses other ingredients & how to make the recipes even healthier. Nutrition information is provided along with dietetic exchanges.

Recipes include dips, spreads, appetizers, salads, dressings, snacks, chilled soups, & breads. Many varieties of cheesecake, cookies, cakes, pies, puddings, frostings, & fondues are also included.

There are even recipes for many flavors of frozen yogurt that only require a blender. Some of my favorites are the crescents, soft pretzels, & no-cook cucumber soup. I also enjoyed the scrumptious oatmeal kiss cookies.

I love this cookbook! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

A co-worker loaned me this cookbook in 1996. I tried a couple recipes, loved them, copied the ISBN info, and returned the book with the intent to buy a copy. I left the job, moved, and lost the info. For years I looked in used bookstores hoping to recognize the book when I saw it. I finally found the ISBN in a folder of old papers and promptly ordered the book.

I have loved every recipe I have made from this book. I have to make myself try new ones because I love my regulars so much! I have trouble making up my own recipes, but with several recipes from here, I often adjust and ad lib based on what ingredients I have on hand.

I recently bought another Prevention recipe book from this series and have enjoyed it as well.

Cooking Light Low-Fat Low Calorie Quick and Easy Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 27 people found this review helpful.

These recipes definately save fat, calories and time. The meals taste great and you don't feel like you are sacrificing on taste. Some recipes do take a little more time than the book states but they are well worth it. I also like that they break down the calories by what percent come from fat. I like the recipe tips offered in the book as well as how the book is broken down by desserts, meatless, fish, etc. This is a winner which I will send to my friends.

Can't go wrong with Cooking Light 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the third Cooking Light cookbook I've bought and I love them all. I was looking specifically for a low-fat collection and this one got my attention because of the "quick and easy" part of the title. The recipes are easy to follow, easy to prepare and so far every one of them has looked and tasted great.

Editorial Review:

For cooks who want more with less, the recipes featured in this cookbook include ten or fewer common ingredients, easy step-by-step instructions, and a complete nutritional analysis along with a list of the American Dietetic Association exchange for each serving.

A cookbook you can use. 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

It's true. The recipes are good and only unnecessary fat is cut out. The recipes aren't too complicated or time-consuming and I haven't had a failure yet. If you like Alice Water's Vegetables, Deborah Madison and the like, you should enjoy this cookbook. Happy Cooking!

One of the best vegetarian cookbooks I have ever come across! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I have been a vegetarian for more than 25 years, and this is my favorite cookbook of the dozens I have acquired. The recipes are varied and come out very well -- the Veggie Paella (pictured on the cover), made with the Mediterranean stock (recipe is also in the book), is out of this world! There are also wonderful recipes with quinoa and other grains and beans that aren't found in most cookbooks (try the quinoa tabouli or quinoa caviar for a treat!). I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys good meatless meals!

Editorial Review:

The 1996 James Beard Award winner for Best Vegetarian Cookbook is an intoxicating collection of flavorful meals, featuring ingredients from a variety of ethnic cuisines. Containing a complete nutritional analysis of each recipe, this book offers an exciting introduction to the world's healthiest foods. Full-color photos.
