Wow: Great Recipes!! 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I am so excited about this new low carb cookbook: so far every recipe has been incredible! I usually have to "tweek" recipes in most low carb cookbooks (including the recipes from the low carb queen Dana Carpenter). But so far with Lauri's new cookbook, most of my margin notes are simply a heart symbol next to the recipes that I love (which are so conveniently listed at the beginning of each section). Lauri's first cookbook was good but this one is great! I applaud how well this cookbook is organized. Each section has the recipes categorized as Induction, Weight Loss and Maintenance. This has been very helpful!

When I get a new cookbook, my first choices are the vegetable and chicken recipes. So far I have made the Chicken in Coconut Sauce with the Hawaiian Salsa (incredible!), Chicken Paprika (oh my god!) and the Aspen Chicken (outstanding). As for the vegetables, I've tried the Turnips Au Gratin, Poached Red Cabbage and Pepper Jack Cauliflower; all are super great. But the Mock Rice Pilaf is out of this world and brilliant! I can't wait to try all the wonderful looking variations offered.

Now let's talk about chili - the Slap Me Silly Chili is unbelievably delicious and what a cute name! This chili has a little heat (although not as much as Lauri seems to think it has) but it is the flavor that slapped me silly. Wow! It is so good! The blend of spices and textures is excellent. Perhaps it is the chorizo sausage that sets this chili above all others.

For breakfast I have tried two variations of the pancakes and love them. The spiced Pumpkin Muffins are delicious and so very moist. I had the Hot Cereal this morning which has 12g of fiber and it is wonderful too. However, I did tweek this recipe by omitting the psyllium husk (because I didn't have any) and substituting a bit more flax seed meal.

As for the desserts, so far I have made the Blackberry Yogurt Pie which was outstanding and a really healthy dessert option as well as the Ginger Pecan Cookies which never completely cooled as my whole family gobbled them up. I'm looking forward to making the other cookie recipes.

Although I have tried only a handful of recipes so far, I am astounished that each one has been so incredibly wonderful! Move over Dana Carpenter, it looks like you are going to be usurped by Lauri Ann Randolph as my new favorite low carb cookbook author.

Editorial Review:

More delicious recipes from the author of the best seller "Lauri's Low Carb Cookbook". Lauri Ann Randolph has done it again; another superb collection of recipes to tantalize the taste buds. More than 460 low carb recipes including over 360 basic recipes plus more than 100 variations. The recipes emphasize nutritious, whole foods taking the dieter from the Induction Phase, through the Weight Loss Phase and into the Maintenance Phase. Recipes vary from simple to gourmet featuring cuisines from around the world and including plenty of helpful hints for the novice cook.

This cookbook also contains valuable information regarding fiber, essential fatty acids, sweeteners and which fats and oils are most appropriate from different cooking methods. There is also helpful information about cooking with herbs and with alcohol to enhance and deepen the flavors of recipes.

Fun and Tasty Too! 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This cookbook has fun twists on some old favorites. The cornish game hens stuffed with orange wedges, rosemary and garlic and glazed with orange marmalade and rosemary was yummy! I bought this book to give as a gift, but I have to order another because the pages are wearing! If you grow your own herbs or purchase them at the store, this is a great book for using herbs in your cooking.

Editorial Review:

These quick and easy recipes show how herbs and spices can take the place of oils and butters to add flavor to low-fat foods. Included are over 150 recipes for sumptuous dishes from appetizers to desserts-low-fat herb cheese spreads, dilled shrimp salad, rack of lamb with mustard, mushrooms paprika, and chocolate spice bars are just a few of the treats that await you.

Most of the recipes take less than 30 minutes to prepare and use ingredients easily found in your neighborhood grocery store. Complete with tips on growing, drying, freezing, and buying prepared herbs and spices, as well as creating savory gifts of herbal treats, Cooking With Herbs And Spices is destined to a permanent place on any cookbook shelf.

If you're always wondering what herb or spice to reach for to give your meals flavor without fat, look no further! Everything you need to know to get started is within these pages.

too large scale. 3 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

All of the recipes make servings of 12 or more, this is great if a family is on this plan but, i'm just one person and the recipes cannot be broken down for my use. Would love a book of recipes for one or two.

I really tried to give this book a chance, but...... 1 out of 5 stars.

Everything tastes very odd, and yes, I can cook, so It wasnt a question of loose nut between the book and the mixing bowl, ha ha. I agree with one of the other reviews, in that there are easier and tastier ways to prepare some of the dishes, BESIDES using pork rinds and guar gum over and over. I was very dissapointed and I am returning this book and the companion dessert book.

Read before you buy this book!!!! 2 out of 5 stars.

This book should have been titled, "Eat Yourself Thin, by Eating Tons of Pork Rinds". So many recipes call for pork rinds--yuck!! I understand that the Atkins diet uses them a lot, but this book calls itself a "low carb cookbook", not an "exclusive Atkins cookbook". Very misleading. I won't use crushed up pig fat--not very healthy!!!!!

Editorial Review:

Quick and Easy delicious low-carb recipes developed for people following any low carbohydrate diet. Serving sizes and carb counts for every recipe are accurate and a lay-flat binding allows the cookbook to remain open at all times. Easy to find and easy to use ingredients makes this cookbook a wonderful addition to any kitchen.

Not Bad, Could Be Better 4 out of 5 stars.
24 of 34 people found this review helpful.

I wonder of the AHA's use of margarine in this book is influenced by its selling of endorsements to certain manufacturers. It's a mystery why so many recipes would require the use of "acceptable margarine" to saute ingredients, when using a little fat-free broth would accomplish the same thing. Still, there are a lot of excellent recipies in this book, making it worthwhile.

My favorite Heart Association Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have bought later editions and given them away. This is one is still my favorite. I particularly use the baking section. Love the Light Boston Brown bread which is easy to make and also the carrot cake which doesn't have so much oil. Both are made with whole wheat flour. The whole wheat french bread is good also.

The paper it is printed on has held up very well over the years unlike the flimzier newer editions.

Its a sticky page book! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Joan makes a comment in the book that she hopes it becomes the readers stickypage book. The one you go back to time after time and the pages become sticky from use. It has for me. I was very apprehensive about purchasing a "celebrity" cookbook..looked at it and thumbed the pages no less than six times. But its worth the purchase price for the recipes alone. You don't have to read about Joan if you don't want to. The recipes are fantastic and everyone I have served to guests has elicited raves and requests for copies of the recipes

Celebrity cookbook for real people 5 out of 5 stars.

Most cookbooks I buy end up on a dusty shelf mainly because I cannot spend time on elaborate recipes during my busy day. I was given this book at my bridal shower over 5 years ago, and I've been using it religiously since then. I usually cook healthy things and am always looking for simple recipes and things that taste good even though they are healthy. And this book has it all.
She writes a candid story about her weight battles, and then the delicious recipes follow. She has collected them over time with the help of her family, coworkers, guests on GMA, favorite restaurants, etc. They are segregated into the usual cookbook sections with the addition of some new ones, like dishes that kids love. My favorite recipes would have to be the spicy tomato soup and Academy Award Winning chiliburgers. This was a great gift that definitely is not collecting dust.

These recipes are great. Very innovative and healthy. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a compendium of both great chinese dishes that have been re-created to minimize fat content, and innovative new dishes. My doctor is happy with my cholesterol drop, and I love the taste and texture of these dishes. The glossary, units conversion, low fat cooking methods, and nutrition notes sections are really helpful. Everyone that cooks should have a copy of this book. I have not seen any other books that compare to it. My hat's off to the author.

Absolutely Amazing! 5 out of 5 stars.
