A Perfect Fit 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I have been on a moderate carb diet for a few years and was experimenting with recipes that would fit with my exchange diet and carb counting. Splenda had been on the market for only a year and few people knew how to cook with it and gain good results. Enter Marlene Koch into my life. Her recipes from this book were just what the doctor ordered. There is just enough sugar to make the textures in the food work, but the carb count and fat content was "a perfect fit" for my diet needs. Not only that, but every recipe I tried tasted fantastic and this book has allowed me to return classic recipes such as three bean salad, coleslaw, gingerbread and "sugar" cookies back into my diet without guilt or ill effects. I've made many of the recipes in this book and make her "Heavenly Cheesecake" for my holiday table each year.

Thank you Marlene for all your hard work. I'm looking forward to reading and cooking from more of your books!

Editorial Review:

The first of its kind cookbook expands the uses of Splenda, proving that it is versatile enough to be used in many different recipes for all types of meals.

Healthy eating, yes, if you want a total lifestyle overhaul... 3 out of 5 stars.
83 of 91 people found this review helpful.

I guess I'm not the typical reviewer here - I am interested in healthy eating, but without the context of a major life change for myself and my family of five... I'd like to find new ways to eat well, without undermining our entire familiar (mostly vegetarian, mostly well-balanced) diet.

Let's start with what this book IS: an excellent guide to using all types of sprouts, and to which types are good for which occasions - baking, stir-frying, salads, etc. It's also a rather overt advertisement for "Sproutman's" own website and sprouting tools (sprout bag, greenhouse, seeds, etc); fair enough.

The book is full of interesting, simple recipes and ideas for using sprouts either raw or with low temp cooking to get the most nutrition out of every green, crunchy bite. He's also thrown in a bunch of related nutrition stuff - non-sprout items like vegan ice creams and helpful alternatives to salt and other seasonings.

Still, I found that most of the recipes were impractical for family cooking. If two cups of sprouted wheat make a single small loaf or several crackers or cookies, it doesn't take long to realize I'm going to need wheat berries bursting out of every corner of my tiny kitchen in order to create one meal for the five of us.

And that's just bread! To create enough sprouts for us to eat a single salad, a single stir-fry, a single helping of sprouted nuts... well, we're probably going to need to renovate other areas of the house to accomodate all the grow-bags or baskets.

Also, many of the recipes are just variants on previous recipes. Like, he'll take a page to describe how to make a cracker, and then ANOTHER page - this is just an example from memory - on how to make seasoned crackers, and it's obvious the ingredients and steps are identical, just with seasonings added.

Finally, having tasted sprouts and fermented products, I have some idea of what kinds of flavours to expect. Suggesting that his fermented "rejuvalac" beverage will taste similar to lemonade sounds way overblown. He actually hints that it may taste more "like sauerkraut" - to me, that's a BIG difference. Sorry, but I don't curl up on a summer's day with a tall, cool glass of sauerkraut.

Similarly, I realize our dependence on added sugars is overblown, but if I call something a "cookie", my kids (10 & 11) are going to know I'm lying if it's only sweetened with natural sprout maltose and a few raisins. Yes, sprouts give a nice malty sweetness to bread - but only the most idealistic parents would believe kids would accept it as a special-occasion treat.

I guess I was looking for a book that would help me incorporate sprouts into every aspect of our regular household dishes - stir fries, yes, but also to add flavour/nutrition to standard yeast breads, cakes, cookies, veg patties, etc.

Being almost totally vegan (he practically apologizes in the one section where he asks you to put a bit of butter into your rice cereal), there is too little range of dishes for our family's tastes and the dishes offered seem too monotonous for long-term enjoyment.

This book may be ideal for a single person or a couple who want to try an "extreme" veg or raw-foods or minimal-cooking lifestyle. For our family lifestyle, the overhaul required is too enormous to even begin imagining - and trust me, I have plenty of imagination!

Imperfect, but still worthwhile 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Apparently not everyone wants to deal with cooking for a whole month at once, so Deborah's new book presents the mini-session: roughly 5 to 8 recipes all involving one central ingredient. You wait until that ingredient is on sale in bulk, buy a lot of it, and do one brief session. Stash some of the meals in the freezer, then do a different mini-session a little while later and stash a few more things away. If you still want to cook for a month at once, you just do several mini-sessions at one time.Because of this new format, she does not repeat any recipes within this book. Deborah also provides tips and hints for turning your own recipes into freezer meals or putting together your own mini-sessions.

Each mini-session includes a shopping list and preparation instructions. And of course, as before, each recipe is simple and easy, and provides quick prep instructions for when you take it out of the freezer. The recipe layout is clean and easy to follow.

As the title of the book implies, these are, in general, healthier recipes than those in her last book. They include more vegetables. There's an emphasis on lighter fare: chicken and turkey instead of beef, and even beans and vegetarian recipes. Each recipe says it makes 6 servings. Note that if you're on a diet that emphasizes portion control, they make more like 9 to 10 servings (in our experience). Most of the nutritional information is included (calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, cholesterol); unfortunately fiber is not included, to the sorrow of Weight Watchers members counting POINTS.

Our overall judgment is that these recipes are a bit more bland than her others, but definitely good. Bland is a minus for me, but I know it's a plus for many people. So the recipes are quite good, but if you like flavorful food you may want to experiment a bit.

Editorial Review:

Through Frozen Assets" how to cook for a day and eat for a month, Deborah Taylor-Hough became known as "the once-a-month cooking expert." She taught people how to increase time at the family table, while decreasing time in the kitchen and drive-thru lanes. In addition she saved over $24,000 in five years and taught readers how tot do the same. Now she's back with a book of low-fat meal plans that utilize the same time and cost effective methods.

Very good recipe book. Nice details. Great photos too. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'm glad I found this book. While there are many wonderful recipes, I especially like the color photography of the dish and the listing of calories, protein, carbs, fat content (by type), cholesterol, sodium, etc for each and every dish. That fact alone is worth so much to me. It is an all around well done publication. I wish all my recipe books were this thorough.

Tasty and Simple Recipes -Great for Gluten Free 3 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This cookbook provides recipes for simple and tasty meals using dried beans that can be found in any grocery store. I have other bean cookbooks that call for exotic beans that are difficult to find. My only problem with this book is that half of the recipes call for bean flours that are not so easy to locate. Health and specialty food stores may have one or two types of bean flours such as soy but not all of them called for in this book. The only place I could find pinto bean flour (used in many of the recipes) was in online stores with high shipping charges. The author directs the reader to Bob's Red Mill in Oregon but their web site did not offer any bean flours which may not be available anymore. Because I really wanted to try many of the recipes and I was intrigued with using bean flours in cooking, I took the author's advice and bought a K-Tec Kitchen Mill to grind my beans at home. I am happy with it and I think the instant refried beans made with pinto bean flour is tasty and will be a money saver over time. The soups thickened with bean flours will also be a healthy and tasty way to eat. If you are not interested in searching for bean flours or grinding them at home you may want to look at other bean cookbooks before you purchase this one. Although, this cookbook would be helpful for those allergic to wheat because the recipes show how bean flours can replace products containing gluten.

No more counting carbs, calories, or fat grams! This revolutionary diet plan works with your hormones to curb your appetite, boost your metabolism, take weight off—and never put it on again.

Cutting-edge scientific research shows that losing weight is not about carbs, calories, or even willpower—it’s about a hormone called leptin and how it functions in your body. Leptin is your body’s natural weight-loss mechanism: it curbs your appetite and jump-starts your metabolism. And when those hormones are working properly, they make you literally fat resistant! You will lose weight effortlessly and efficiently, and never gain those pounds back.

A leading expert in the field of nutritional medicine, Dr. Leo Galland knows that if you’ve struggled to lose weight on diet after diet but still can’t shake those excess pounds, chances are you are “leptin resistant”—your body no longer responds to leptin, making it impossible to slim down, no matter what size portions or how few carbs you eat. But here’s the good news: by adding the right foods to your diet, you can quickly reverse leptin resistance and reprogram your body to start melting away the pounds.

The Fat Resistance Diet is the first weight-loss plan designed specifically to combat leptin resistance, using a unique combination of anti-inflammatory and hormone-balancing foods to get your hormones working again. Used by hundreds of Dr. Galland’s patients with remarkable results, the three-phase regimen includes:
STAGE 1: A fourteen-day starter program that delivers a loss of ten to fourteen pounds in the first two weeks. Inflammation-fighting superfoods work to trigger rapid weight loss and set your hormones straight.
STAGE 2: A ninety-day plan that builds on the benefits of Stage 1 and delivers a loss of at least five pounds a month. You can enjoy a greater variety of foods while still keeping your hormones working overtime.
STAGE 3: Sustainable for life, the meal plans in this phase keep your hormones doing their job, even after you reach your target weight, and offer an expanded, flavorful menu.

With delicious recipes that are rich in healing carbs, healing fats, and powerful phytonutrients, the diet is a breeze to stick with—there are no hard-to-find ingredients, no expensive supplements, and no complicated proportions to figure out. Best of all, when you make the Fat Resistance Diet part of your life, your hormones will do your weight-loss work for you! This groundbreaking program at last reveals the true secret to weight loss success, and will transform you from a chronic dieter into a lean, fat-fighting machine.

Fast, Healthy, Delicious...and You'll Shed a Few Pounds Too! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I have owned this book for several months now but not until recently have I taken it out and actually used some of the recipes. Well actually, I have taken up Weight Watchers again and I was looking for some recipes that wouldn't remind me that I was dieting. I just finished a Garden-Fresh Tuna Salad Sandwich (4 points) that was just packed with flavor with just a scant 3 grams of fat. The photograph of the sandwich is what caught my eye and that is one of the big selling points of this and other Pillsbury cookbooks.

The book begins with a comprehensive discussion called, 'A Guide to Healthier Eating'. Here you will find information about the soon to be amended Food Pyramid and just what is meant by a 'serving'. The authors then give the reader the 'Seven Steps to a Healthy Diet' which include suggestions for improving your food intake. Additionally, there is a glossary of health and food-related terms, some suggestions for using the nutritional information included in the book and some suggested menus combining some of the recipes.

Like many cookbooks, Fast and Healthy covers the culinary experience from Appetizers to Desserts. Aside from the many beautiful photos, the book is replete with many sidebars. These give the user tips that will enhance not only the recipe, but the expertise of the cook as well. Nutritional information for each recipe is provided and dietary exchanges for diabetics are also included. Weight Watchers clients like myself can easily calculate the Winning Points from the information provided and most of the recipes will fall into weight loss plans. For the chocolate lover, who can resist Cocoa Mocha Brownies or Double Chocolate Chip Cookies....two and one point respectively???

As you can tell, I like this book. I am a big fan of Pillsbury's cookbooks and this one is going to be a good friend over the next three months...and well beyond!
