Perhaps a little too thin? 2 out of 5 stars.
14 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I was a bit disapponted with many of the recipes in this book either because they seriously lacked flavor or just didn't turn out right. Also, I agree with the title in the sense that the dishes described in it are healthy, but quite a few are far from being simple (or, conversely, they are so simple that they're boring). On the bright side, I did enjoy many of his dessert recipes, particularly his fruit-based ones. Also, Pepin's example menus are quite creative and helpful, provided that you can do something to dress up the flavor of the actual meals. There is no question in my mind that Jacques Pepin is perhaps one of the most talented and respected chefs of our time, but this particular book just seems to fall short.

My Favorite Cookbook Yet! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I am very health conscious, so the title of this cookbook grabbed my attention. I did not even know who Mr. Pepin was. I purchased the cookbook on a whim, and have not been sorry, yet. I did not know healthy cooking could taste so good. As one reviewer said, it is all in the preparation and spices. I simply had no idea! I have made several recipes so far, and have not been disappointed. They are truly delicious. However, the only negative thing I have to say is some of the recipe's ingredients are hard to find, or ones I have never heard of. It isn't simple cooking as the title implies, but it is well worth the time and effort put into each recipe. This is the best cookbook I have ever owned, and highly recommend it to anyone, whether you are health conscious or not.

Although those with a wheat allergy or celiac disease must be vigilant about what they buy and eat, they don't have to forego favourites like pasta, bread, and cake. They can still eat well and entertain family and friends at the table, perhaps even better and more healthfully than ever before. Inspired by her travels in Europe as well as the eclectic, cutting-edge cuisine of northern California, Mallorca presents everything from breakfast ideas to quick weeknight suppers and elegant dinner-party fare.Butterflied trout with crispy crumbs takes just five minutes to broil; chicken meat loaf wrapped in prosciutto doubles as a tasty pate; gluten-free pasta dishes actually taste like pasta; and chestnut and sausage dressing upstages the holiday bird. And desserts dazzle. Mallorca presents a new, nutritionally sound, lighter style of baking. Far from tasting like gritty substitutes, these gluten-free cakes, cookies, tarts, and crusty flatbreads look and taste as though they came from a boutique bakery. There's even a chapter devoted to gluten-free grocery shopping. "The Wheat-Free Cook" offers easy-to-follow advice and describes the culinary possibilities of dozens of tasty and satisfying gluten-free grains and flours such as quinoa, flax, millet, and teff, as well as sources for these products.

Just had to write a reveiw about my favorite Cookbook... 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

An avid reader, I don't write reviews about any books, none-the-less the "Cooking" kind. We ladies who love to cook and eat are prone to buying many cookbooks only to be disappointing and donated to the local Thrift Store. But the pages of this one, and the sequel, "More, Healthy Homestyle Cooking" are well worn and lovingly revisited nearly every day. They are unique in that they teach you a different way of making meals that are not only easy and healthy but, as many others here have said, taste absolutely delicious.

If you like Mexican try the "Easy Cheesy Chili Relleno Casserole" and "Split Pea Guacamole" (yes it HAS avacados in it) and the consistancy is actually superior to the regular. I love Italian food and the "Chicken Cacciatore", "Eggplant Parmigiana", "Chicken Marsala" and "Italian Eggplant and Rice Bake" are out of this world. Equally good are things like "Hoppin' John", "Pork Chop Suey", "Chinese Chicken Salad" and "Carrot and Raisin Salad". I could go on and on.

Like others here, I've given copies of this Cookbook to many friends and family who have raved about the finished products. I can guarantee won't be disappointed.

Inside Healthy Homestyle Cooking you'll find more than 200 family favorite recipes dramatically reduced in fat, calories, cholesterol, and sodium without sacrificing taste or texture. It also includes a complete guide to transforming any dish into a healthier irrestible version.

Susan's Great! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book for a dear friend a few years ago and she loved it. I have all of Susan's books and decided I owed it to myself to add this to my collection. Her style is so warm and genuine you feel as if you're talking with an old friend. Wonderful to curl up with and reminisce about your own "girlfriend" experiences as you read. If you enjoy Susan Branch you must have this book.

Editorial Review:

Girlfriends Forever is about the joys of sharing everything with a good friend: recipes; style, decorating, and wardrobe tips; memories; and party ideas. Susan Branch, in her appealing, personal style, tells of her life with her friends, from her exhilarating experience of meeting the Beatles to her Tuesday Girls get-togethers, and offers tips on the art of the home. Sprinkled throughout are her thoughts on food and love, all highlighted by quotes and fresh, vivid watercolours. The recipes have a winning combination of snappy taste and healthy, low-fat ingredients, and contain complete nutritional information. This is Susan Branchs first large-format book since The Summer Book was published in 1995. The Susan Brach newsletter has more than 10,000 subscribers.

exquisite, well developed recipes 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I love this cookbook! I know 5 stars is the highest rating. Here's why it has earned all 5:

1) It's exactly what it claims to be: a low carb cookbook. Yes, some of the recipes are high fat, but it never claims to be a lowfat cookbook or a cookbook that works with any particular diet regimen like Atkins or The Zone or Sugarbusters or whatnot. It's wonderfully low-carb.

2) Like a good cookbook should have, it includes a beginning section explaining where the recipes came from or how they came to be developed. The author is a foodie, so she took many of her favorite recipes or favorite restaurant foods and found techniques to make them low-carb. This section plus the section on special ingredients is the first 50 pages. The rest is recipes.

3) Another good cookbook requirement: special ingredients are identified at the beginning of the chapter, with descriptions of how to shop for each one and there is a section indicating how to get them by mail order or the web in the back. Perfect for me because some of the ingredients were things I didn't know about or at least had never purchased before.

4) Recipes are divided by section: starters, main dishes, side dishes, veggie dishes, desserts, etc. Some cookbooks go only by ingredient, which is confusing to me. I'd rather select a main dish and a vegetable dish rather than try to determine if the veggie dish is supposed to be a main course.

5) Each recipe indicates the yield. Something not enough cookbooks do. I want to know if I'm making something for 2 or 8 or 10 people so that I can adjust the recipe as needed (by half or double) for my intended number of diners.

6) Each recipe is well written. There is no wondering when to start each part of it. The instructions are step by step in order by time and most often the time between each step is indicated. Love that!

7) The recipes are gourmet! Most of the low-carb cookbooks I have are SO BORING. Steamed chicken breast this, cottage cheese that. Not so in this lovely find. Here are some of the recipes: Thai style beef curry, Broccoli with toasted pine nuts, Baked chard with chiles, Spanish cream, Leg of lamb with a tapenade crust....

8) If this were a new cookbook, the only ding would be that it uses the sweetener that comes in pink or blue packets rather then Splenda, which is a relative newcomer to the grocery store. Since this book isn't exactly new, I can't fault it for not using an ingredient that probably wasn't on the shelf at the time. For each pink or blue packet, you can substitute about 1.5 teaspoons of Splenda or sucralose and come out with similar results.

9) For newbies to cooking, there are suggested menus at the end of the book - making it easier to decide what main dishes to pair with which vegetables and\or sides, etc. This type of planning is something that can be learned but takes time. It's nice that the author included this section for people that need a litle extra help.

Editorial Review:
