Cooking Light: The Lazy Gourmet 5 out of 5 stars.

Turns out to be a great addition to my shelf of Cooking Light Cookbooks! I purchased The Lazy Gourmet a few weeks ago because of my positive experiences with this series (and the magazine) but I didn't expect it to be this good! I've previously been disappointed with some of those "six-ingredients-or less" type cookbooks because the recipes aren't *really* six ingredients--you have to add several more just to get some flavor, and/or they rely too heavily on convenience foods. But so far, The Lazy Gourmet has delivered on its promise, without sacrificing flavor or nutrition. These aren't "instant" recipes--they do (mostly) list more than six ingredients and they do take more time than slapping a chicken breast in a pan with prepared Teriyaki sauce--but we're talking gourmet here! You expect to cook a *little*! There is some use of mixes (low-fat brownie mix, for instance) but in my experience the convenience-foods in the recipes, like frozen hash browns (in a delicious portabella-mushroom & Asigo cheese brunch dish) or frozen mixed vegatables (in a pretty, savory, stuffed crookneck squash side dish)work well--and the completed recipes taste good, are low-fat, and look like they took a lot more time to prepare then they did! Try the awesome stuffed chicken-breast recipe, with a spinach and prepared low-fat pesto stuffing (and a coating of cornflakes) at your next dinner-party. It's delicious and looks great. After only a few weeks, I have gotten five stellar, entertaining-quality recipes out of it. That justifies the purchase price as far as I'm concerned.

Scrumptious Recipes - Excellent bibliography 5 out of 5 stars.
34 of 34 people found this review helpful.

I thoroughly enjoyed the information and the recipes. You don't have to suffer from gout to enjoy Cherry Freeze, Mexican Rice Cooler, Potato Chili, Almond Crisps - many recipes are simple wholesome fare that can become family favorites, repeated again and again. Tips for small changes that make a big difference, quick snacks and other tips come in handy. Indexed with a lengthy bibliography, sources of information and tables of foods. This is not for gourmet chefs, it is for ordinary folks who want to manage their disease by diet - simple, varied and delicious.

Gout Hater's Cookbook, recipes lower in purines and lower in fat. This cookbook features comprehensive lists of foods lower, relatively high and highest in purines. Designed specifically for persons suffering from gout.

A "must-read" for high blood pressure patients on medicine. 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

You discover your blood pressure's high, and your MD puts you on pills. Now that your pressure is controlled you can relax a little, knowing the one or two pills a day reduce your cardiovascular risk, right? Control Your High Blood Pressure Without Drugs, by Cleaves M. Bennett, M.D. is your wake-up call. Dr. Bennett explains in non-technical language what blood pressure is, why we need it, and what exactly goes awry to drive it up and keep it elevated. After convincing the reader that high blood pressure must be controlled, Dr. Bennett reviews the usual treatment regimen most practitioners employ: lip service to non-drug methods and a prescription for one or more medications. Although Dr. Bennett concedes that drugs may be necessary as a holding measure, he takes a dim view of their long-term value, showing the reader how drugs merely set up a "tug-of-war" in the body between toxic chemicals and reactions to stress within the body which brought about elevated pressure in the first place. Claiming success in weaning hypertensives off their pills, Dr. Bennett argues persuasively for life style changes in diet(low-salt,low fat), exercise, and stress reduction. He educates, motivates, even graduates the reader from the same step-by-step course in blood pressure reduction offered at his clinic. Blood pressure medicine today is available and afforable enough, and with mild enough side effects, that it is difficult to motivate doctors and patients to follow Dr. Bennett's regime closely enough to obtain dramatic results. But it is worth the effort to try lowering blood pressure without drugs. Even if you still require pills to do the job, following Dr. Bennett's guidelines will enable you to get by on less medication, as well as give you the satisfaction that you're taking charge of your destiny. Cleaves Bennett's book is a "must-read" for everyone taking pills to lower blood pressure, especially those with mild to moderate levels.
