Editorial Review:

When your favorite team is playing, Debbie Moose's Fan Fare is the only book you'll need to tailgate at the big game or throw a party for friends at home, with 100 classic and regional recipes--and the stories and traditions behind them. Fan Fare includes favorites from around the country, from Jo Ann's Campfire Onion Blossoms--popular at NASCAR races, where tailgating often turns into a days-long campout--to bratwurst prepared just the way Green Bay Packers fans like it. It's organized into five chapters that cover every party of the game day feast: Kickoff (appetizers and snacks), Bowl Games (soups, beans, and chili), Hot Streak (entrées), Pit Stops (salads, sides, breakfast, and brunch), and Overtime (desserts and drinks). Moose has also included all the important tips for an impromptu home party or a carefully planned on-site tailgate, with information on food transport and safety, outdoor cooking techniques, suggested menus, and a calendar of sporting events, so there s a great excuse for a tailgate party any time of the year.

Full of New Ideas! 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I'm addicted to Christmas books & magazines, so I wasn't sure if I'd really find anything new or unique in this book. This is the first Gooseberry Patch book I've ever looked through, so I can't comment on how it compares with other G.P. editions, but I did find many cute and clever craft ideas and recipes that were new to me. One idea I plan to try is the Framed Hankie Card Holder that uses a wood frame and 3 Christmas-themed hankies to create pockets to hold received cards (sounds odd, but it's cute). Other ideas I liked for my home using red & white fabrics and holiday-themed tea towels include a Quilt, Tea Towel Gift Bags, Table Runner & Chair Back Covers. A clever gift for kids to make is a covered chip can filled with chocolate-dipped potato chips (the kind of chips that all have the same shape and line up in a tall can). Lots of snowflake-themed gifts, a few pet gifts, wrapping and card ideas. Plus, there are dozens of great, new recipes for food gifts, holiday meals and entertaining (hot drink mixes, decadent desserts, soups, and some new side dish combinations).

Editorial Review:

It's time for another heart-warming holiday season with Gooseberry Patch Christmas, Book 7. Those Country Friends are back and they're cuter than ever, with dozens of irresistible recipes, fun-to-make gifts, and decorating projects the whole family will adore. Vintage tree trimmings, paper crafts, memory keepsakes, tasty food gifts, a holiday journal-they're all here, and much, much more. Crafting hints and tips, reader-submitted recipes, plus never-fail directions make this an indispensable guide for old-fashioned, home-made Christmas cheer.

Yummy! 4 out of 5 stars.

Potluck has wonderful receipes for home or bringing to a party. I love cookbooks with a picture next to every receipe. Variety of all types of food and various ways of preparing them. Breakfast- Lunch - Dinner Grilling, Baking, Slow Cooker it's all there!

For church dinners, family get-togethers, brunch with friends, your family 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Any time I am required to take a dish for a potluck gathering, I call my mother for ideas. Now Taste of Home has given me a book full of eye-catching choices with their "The New Potluck." (I still have to call my mother.)

This glossy-coated, sturdy book repeats the picture on the cover with its dust jacket. As is my preference, there is a picture with every recipe. The layout on each page is simple and easy on the eye with lots of white space for writing notes (if you like to mark in your books). Did this recipe work for me? Was it fabulous or so-so? Did I double it? And so on.

Cookbook editors organize their books in various ways: by types of dishes, by types of meals, by gatherings. "A New Potluck" is arranged by topics, including Crowd-pleasing specialties, Slow cooker sensations, Fun finger foods, Dishes in a hurry, Breakfast buffets, One-dish wonders, and Festive Favorites.

Festive Favorites offers such fare as Easter Egg Bread, cooked with dyed eggs. Very fanciful! Or gorgeous Poinsettia Cookies or Daffodillies, refrigerated biscuit dough prepared to look like flowers with dilled cream cheese centers.

Dishes in a hurry contains Layered ham and spinach salad (I have always wanted this recipe), Italian meatball hoagies (yum), Shrimp appetizer spread (a full-page beauty), and a tomato-ey Southwestern Bean Soup.

In Crowd pleasing specialties, the recipe I most want to try is Ginger Iced Tea made with Ginger Ale. Others include Mango Nut Bread, Four Cheese Bow Ties (I am making this soon as it is my number one favorite choice in this book according to picture and ingredients), and Sunshine Chicken Wings (one of the best-looking wings recipes ever).

For the Breakfast Buffet there are all kinds of muffins and coffee cakes. What I look for is the real food: Sausage Hash Brown Bake, Cheesy Egg Puffs, Southwest Sausage Bake topped with sliced tomatoes, Ham and Cheese Strata, and French Toast Casserole.

The desserts are spread throughout the book. Here are a few for sweets lovers: Apple Cinnamon Turnovers, Blueberry Lattice Bars, Apple-Cherry Cobbler, Black Forest Crepes (yum), and Seven Fruit Salad.

The Oven Cheese Chowder looks wonderful. A quick and easy dish to prepare on a Friday night is the Taco Stovetop Supper. Or the Tomato Crouton Casserole. Or Nutty Broccoli Slaw, another fabulous salad one sees at Potlucks and doesn't know the recipe. Well, ha, now I do! How about Chive-Cheese Cornbread? And Spinach Phyllo Bundles?

When I first acquire a new cookbook, I sit down, look through every page and every recipe and mentally note what I want to try first. Then I go through again and carefully read the recipes, select a couple, and begin the process of preparing a new dish.

It's all potluck!

Editorial Review:

Sixty years since Irma Rombauer advised new cooks to "Stand facing the stove," America's love affair with Joy of Cooking continues unabated. And why not? Joy in hand, tens of millions of people -- from novices to professionals -- have learned to do everything from make a meat loaf to clean a squid to frost a wedding cake. For decades, Joy of Cooking has taught America how to cook, serving as the standard against which all other cookbooks are judged.

All About Breakfast & Brunch upholds that standard. In the conversational and instructional manner of the flagship book, All About Breakfast & Brunch elevates "the most important meal of the day" (and the ever-popular weekend brunch) and offers up such mouth-watering egg dishes as Savory Cheese and Herb-Filled Souffléed Omelet, Eggs Benedict, and Matzo Brei; savory brunch sides like Corned Beef Hash, Crabcakes, and Fried Green Tomatoes; delicious fruit and grain recipes, including Apple Fritters, Apricot Compote, and Muesli; and dozens of baked goods, pancakes, and waffles. You'll also find recipes for traditional brunch beverages as well as menus and entertaining tips. Add to that more than 150 original photographs, specially commissioned for this volume, presented in the most easy-to-use design imaginable.

Whether you belong to one of the millions of American households that already own a copy (or two) of Joy, or you have never cracked the spine of a cookbook before, Joy of Cooking: All About Breakfast & Brunch is for you. It is a spectacular achievement, worthy of its name. Joy has never been more beautiful.

Updated traditional fare 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Wonderful recipes for any time, but particularly Christmas. I enjoyed Delia's mincemeat strudle at an English friend's house, made with Delia's delicious mincemeat recipe - not at all like the ghastly, oversweet stuff you buy in jars. Just had to order a book for myself.

A stalwart at Christmas time. 5 out of 5 stars.

I've owned this book for years and utterly rely on it during the madness that is Christmas. Beautiful traditional recipes and some different twists on Christmas lunch/dinner.

Essential reading.

Editorial Review:

This collection of Christmas recipes from Delia Smith includes five different Christmas cakes, a complete vegetarian menu, recipes for gifts such as chocolate truffles, and many traditional favorites. There are also ideas for festive occasions from drinks parties to dinner parties, with dishes such as Roast Goose with Potato, Sage and Apple Stuffing, Caramelized Orange Trifle, and a Terrine with Four Cheeses.

Better than the other Celebrate Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

I looked at both Celebrate by Sheila Lukins and the BC Celebrate book and I chose the Betty Crocker. It has more family type of recipes that would be appealing to both adults and children. The Lukins book is good for adults only. It had many, many recipes there's no way you'd get a kid to eat. I also like the BC one better because it had decoration suggestions, table settings, etc that were more doable and cost effective. I like both books but if you have kids you have to go with the Betty Crocker Celebrate book.

This is a fantastic cookbook. My cousin sent it over to me from Sydney, Australia & i love it! I use it all the time - the pad thai is easy & delicious, the three cheese tart was scrumptious and my boyfriend LOVES the egg & bacon tart......yum! She doesn't overuse words making everything confusing, she uses a simple easy to follow text and the pictures make your mouth water. oh i made the french fries this morning for a breakfast treat.....mmmmm!!!!

Editorial Review:

In Modern Classics, Australia's bestselling food writer Donna Hay takes the food from the past we love the most and makes it irresistibly new. Then she looks at what's the best of the new and turns it into a cooking classic.

Coleslaw gets a well-deserved makeover while free-form ratatouille tart enters the classics category. Chicken soup comes of age again while the fresh, crunchy and healthy rice paper roll makes its debut.

Modem Classics is set to become the contemporary commonsense cookbook of a new generation and an indispensable handbook to those of cooking age now. More practical inspiration from Donna Hay.

The Best of Fruits and Veggies 4 out of 5 stars.
39 of 39 people found this review helpful.

I started frequenting my local farmer's market after a stint living in Greece, where shopping at the open-air stalls taught me how good produce COULD be. This book is a treasure for anyone who has access to great veggies or grows their own; divided by season, it's full of delicious recipes showcasing produce at its very best.

Everything I've made from here has been very good; I have a pot of the yellow split-pea soup with squash and kale in the refrigerator right now. I also really like the turnip and turnip greens soup, which lets you use both good things together. And then there's roasted asparagus, which I must make at least once a month throughout asparagus season.

The only reason I haven't given this book five stars is because there are too many things here I would not make. Fletcher's recipes can be a little too "restauranty" -- too elaborated, too many strongly flavored ingredients canceling each other out. Still, for magnificent food photography and good eating, plus nice tips on how to choose the best of the market, this book is hard to beat. A good addition to any cook's shelf -- and if it inspires you to patronize your local farmer's market, so much the better!

Editorial Review:

Sporting a gorgeous new cover Fresh From the Farmers' Market just got a little fresher. With more home cooks falling in love with the unbeatable flavor of farm-fresh fruits and vegetables there has never been a better time to serve fruits and vegetables at mealtime. This wonderfully useful cookbook is a celebration of market bounty with luscious color photographs and more than 75 mouthwatering recipes. Each delicious soup salad entrÈe and dessert makes the most of the season's best. Janet Fletcher guides shoppers through the market sharing tips on selection and storage as well as advice from the farmers themselves so readers can turn peak-season produce into delicious eating year-round.
