Editorial Review:

“How to recapture those blissful holidays of yore? What’s the secret? I searched and searched and –after a whole hour on the Internet– I found the answer: liquor.”

Yes, says Valerie Peterson, the antidote to holiday stress is, quite simply, to keep good spirits in you. Whether you need to ease the friction at the Thanksgiving table, dull the guilt of smashing one of Great-Grandmama’s heirloom Christmas ornaments, or take the bite out of a New Year’s Day hangover, the collection of cocktails and tips in Peterson’s Holiday Helper will keep you afloat. With festive, original concoctions (such as Pilgrim Sangria and the Ginerous Regift) as well as time-honored classics (Mulled Wine and Eggnog), Peterson administers easy and delicious pick-me-ups for holiday humbugs and soothing calm-me-downs for the inevitable celebratory crises.

Whatever your seasonal malady, Peterson’s Holiday Helper has the cure:

Heading home for the holidays stuffed  into a coach-class center seat?
Fly the skies in a friendlier fashion with Whatever Gets You Through the Woods, prepared with $10 of onboard liquor and other ingredients handily available from your cooperative flight attendant.

Run out of transparent tape with  twenty-seven more presents to wrap?
Hold yourself together with a Double-Stick Scotch Coffee, made with Drambuie, butterscotch schnapps, and piping-hot coffee.

Memories of Christmases Past have you wishing you could change a few things (your choice of an ex-husband or your high-school hairstyle, perhaps)?
Skip the ghastly recollections and go right for the spirits with a citrus-and-spice-infused Dickensian Smoking Bishop.

In addition to these tasty and therapeutic cocktails, Peterson’s Holiday Helper is filled with vintage photographs and holiday ephemera that capture the jolly old days, as well as helpful tips to further your merry frame of mind. With easy instructions for making basics such as simple syrup and infused vodka, along with more than fifty scrumptious recipes, Peterson’s Holiday Helper will help you maintain that old-fashioned feeling of peace and tranquilization–er, tranquillity–for the entire season.

Editorial Review:

What could be better than standing on top of a mountain, snow sparkling, the slopes calling? Not much, except perhaps skiing down to a warm, home-cooked meal that comes together effortlessly.

The Ski House Cookbook makes it all possible with 125 recipes that will keep you on the slopes or winding down with friends afterward, not stuck at the stove. Here are easy and delicious meals designed with minimum prep times for often limited home-away-from-home kitchens, from quick-cooking roasts, sautés, and other fast meals to slow-cooker dishes and recipes that can be made in advance and frozen. And, to get you in the right frame of mind, each recipe is coded with a difficulty rating that corresponds to the familiar green dots, blue squares, and black diamonds of the slopes.

Start the day with ’Twas the Night Before French Toast (assembled in advance and baked in the morning) to keep you going until lunchtime, when a Colorado Cubano (made in a flash from readily available deli meats) will refuel you for the afternoon. An entire chapter of après-ski snacks, including Green Mountain Fondue and Spicy Roasted Chickpeas, helps tide you over until dinner, which includes tempting options such as Roasted Pork Loin with Cherry Balsamic Pan Sauce, Mogul Beef Chili, and Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Bacon. Hearty soups and pastas and indulgent desserts round out this collection of recipes that will warm you up from the inside out.

In addition to the irresistible recipes, The Ski House Cookbook offers practical information on cooking at high altitudes, a section on getting the most out of your slow cooker, and 50 beautiful full-color photographs of the great dishes and snowy landscapes that skiers love. So whether you’re hitting the slopes or just dreaming of days in the lodge, a double diamond pro or struggling down the bunny hill for the first time, here is your go-to guide to making easy, satisfying, and comforting winter meals.

Ilegal to cater from home 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Although the concept of this book is appealing, it is ILLEGAL by health department standards to cater from any home kitchen UNLESS it is fully licensed and certified as a commercial kitchen. Hopefully, this author is not giving permission to folks to attempt to cook and deliver food from home kitchens, which is completely against health department rules.

Amazing and captivating 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I read a lot (and I mean a lot, as I have thousands of books in my library), but this is one of the very few business books I've been truly inspired and uplifted by. When I say "the only book you need to succeed in catering" it's not only a cliche, I believe it's really true! In her writing, the author strikes the fine balance between telling you the 'real deal' and hardships of starting your own business, while managing to keep you motivated and telling you about all the positive that can come out of your efforts as well. It is extremely detailed, honest, passionate, and credible. This has truly been a fantastic help to me while I'm planning to launch my own catering business next year. Brava!!!

The Author Thanks You 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I would like to thank all the folks who have bought my book since 1997 and have placed my book as the top-selling cigar book on Amazon, and have made put me in the top 1/10th of 1 percent of all Amazon book sellers, in any category! I think this makes a statement about the enjoyment of cigars.

The Celtics won the NBA title in 2008 and yes, you saw the players hoisting the trophy and puffing cigars. Just like Michael Jordan enjoyed a big stogie when the Bulls won back in the 1990s. The ultimate celebration is a cigar. No denying it. Readers: your reviews and comments reflect exactly what I had hoped from my readers -- a great primer for beginners, but enough content for more experienced cigar smokers who would like to know more about why they enjoy the cigars they enjoy. I couldn't ask any more than the reader who said the book offered a limited amount of information to him (he was a more experienced cigar lover) but that it was well written. If nothing else, I want it to be a fun and interesting read for you.

Thanks to the greatest and largest publisher in the world, Pearson and Penguin, for wanting to re-up and come out with a second edition. I never would have imagined, but could only have hoped that despite all the negativity about smoking, the cigar, like the peace pipe of old, represents friendship and relaxation. Thanks, and happy puffing. - Tad Gage

Editorial Review:
