Great Original Recipes for Entertaining 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a beautiful cookbook with exquisite photos of Pennsylvania Dutch Country and of the delicious food served at the Inn at Twin Linden. The originality of the recipes and the fact that they turn out beautifully just adds to the enjoyment of this cookbook.

A Great Cookbook for Moving Beyond Boring Breakfasts 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Tired of the standard breakfast fare such plain pancakes, instant oatmeal, and dry cereal, and unable
to do unhealthy meals such as biscuits and sausage gravy on anything but the rare occasion, I went
hunting for a cookbook devoted specifically to breakfast foods. I didn't exactly find the shelves
overflowing with such cookbooks - but fortunately, this was one of them. Compared to the other
sparse offerings available in the bookstore, this one was the definite winner. Not necessarily due to
the number of recipes, because this cookbook isn't exactly overflowing with them, but because of
what looked like quality past what others I saw. As stated by the book jacket, they are not your
traditional breakfasts in any manner - each recipe has unusual ingredients for the type of food, each
is fancier than what you're used to - and plenty of them aren't that much harder to make.

So, deciding that even a single recipe that was good would be worth it, I purchased the book. It
ended up being a while until I made anything from it - not from not wanting to, mind you, just that it
took some time to actually be willing to get up and make breakfast. Finally, one morning, we got up a
bit earlier, and decided to make something for breakfast. Finally, instead of looking in the book and
thinking "I need to make this someday", I actually did it. And the recipe was not only simple to follow,
but the breakfast was most definately worth it.

There is a large variety of recipes in the book, many that I would never think to make for breakfast.
Heck, there are some that I probably will never make, as they're not my style. But that's ok, because
there are plenty more that I definately will have to make some morning. The recipes are not just your
casual weekend breakfast fare, either - very few dishes seem like they would not be appropriate for
serving to company - or even a fancy breakfast. I am very, very happy with this book, as everything
made so far has been downright delicious. Sometimes I feel I can't decide what to make for breakfast,
they all look so incredibly good.

At the beginning of the book, there's even a little description of their Inn, their attitude toward
breakfast (as a "forgotten" meal), and a short description of the area the Inn is located in. At the end
is a selection of menus for special events, such as a Bridal breakfast, sunrise picnic, a brunch buffet,
or a hands-on breakfast for kids. They have lists of things that can be done two days in advance,
and one day in advance, to make it easier to make the food on the morning of the event.

A very anemic offering that falls far short of expectations 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

{Review written Jan 2005}

This is yet another one of those tiny, vapid, and essentially useless "coffee table" type books.

Weighing in at a paltry 96 pages (much of it wasted space), this anemic little offering is, at best, a cute and mildly diverting item of interest to fans of hot peppers ... and even then only if they haven't already delved deeply enough into the hobby to already know more than the author who wrote this sad little excuse for a book on spicy food. A mere 2-3 minutes of websearching will quickly garner you more and better information (for FREE) than is contained in this book, which actually costs money.

The book gives a minimalistic overview of a smattering (but hardly exhaustive) variety of hot chilies, it gives a lightweight introduction to the "Scoville" scale of measuring heat, and then it goes on to list a small selection of recipes (apparently harvested at random from a variety of sources), of highly variable quality, whose only thing in common is the inclusion of some amount of fresh chilies or chili powder.

As someone who's a self-described 'hot head', I found the book to be very disappointing. You'd think that someone picking such a relatively clear cut topic would at least make a token effort at covering the material in something other than trivial and essentially useless breadth and depth.

Not only is the author's list of peppers incomplete, it's also filled with inaccuracies, anemic information on pepper handling techniques, and an incomplete grasp of which peppers are most commonly used in which cuisines from around the world.

From top to bottom, and side to side, this book falls short of expectations. The thinness of the page count alone should tell you everything you need to know.

Editorial Review:

treats that range from mild to scorching, and from simple snacks to light meals, a collection of spicy recipes includes Cajun Cheese Wafers and Black Bean Wontons with Wasabi Sauce. 15,000 first printing.

Editorial Review:

This attractive spiral bound book is packed full of creative ideas that will inspire readers to make terrific bag lunches that are inexpensive, appealing and nutritious. The first half of the book offers tips for picky eaters, organizing your life, money and time saving tips and last minute shortcuts. There are wonderful breakfast ideas and suggestions for getting your whole family involved in making lunches. Safety is a concern with packed lunches and the helpful hints in this section will keep your bag lunches fresh and safe to eat. Lunches don't have to be boring and routine if you use the many free reproducible ideas for perking them up, including notes, poems, riddles, treats, lunch box treasures and smiles. If you want to be environmentally friendly and you love to sew, there's an easy to follow pattern for making your own cloth lunch bag. Maxine consulted Registered Dietitian, Alison Craig to evaluate the material and contribute a section with nutritional advice for concerned parents. This advice reinforces the book's theme of enjoying all foods while keeping a "moderation in all things" perspective on eating. The last half of the book contains recipes that are quick to prepare and sure to be kid pleasers. There are also great ideas for school snack days. Maxine encourages parents to involve their kids in the planning, growing, buying and preparing of food, by explaining the positive, even educational benefits of this involvement.
