Breakfast often competes with a tight morning schedule, which the book acknowledges by offering recipes that can be prepared the night before; regional, café, and bed-and-breakfast favorites are provided, as well. I collect cookbooks and I love to host afternoon tea parties, so this book was right up my alley. It has probably the most extensive collection of recipes of any tea book I own.

Every recipe I have tried in this has turned out great, scones, mock devonshire cream, whoopie pies (oh my! they are delicious!),mini eclairs, strawberry puffs, chicken salad, cheese spread. I could go on and on, Ive had this book for years and I use it all the time. I not only use it when I have tea but also for finger foods at dinner parties.

If you are looking for a book with many different recipes and menus than get this one. The recipes are easy to follow, great tasting and you'll never run out of ideas.

Simple Recipes Practical Advice 5 out of 5 stars.

I just got this book and ended up reading it cover to cover which I typically don't do for a cookbook! It just has so many good sounding, healthy looking, easy prep recipes for my family. She uses whole wheat flour and trys to cut down on white sugar but does not use ingredients that are hard to find.
My three little boys loved the honey mustard chicken and it was so easy that my husband who doesn't venture beyond making pb&j or cereal made it. Today I am having the leftovers with sprouts and hummus in pita. I think this is a good book for busy people interested in eating healthier not just at lunch but all the time. There are good ideas on how to recycling the odd amounts of leftover veggies and rice or pasta from dinner into great lunches.

This surprisingly good cookbook may look slight but each page is packed with valuable information and hints to help even a novice produce excellent food right away. Recipes are graded as to level of difficulty, also a plus. I do a lot of baking and it's nice to see so much valuable information about pastry collected in one place - even the veteran quiche maker will find some good tips (how to prevent a soggy crust, for example). The savories section is particularly valuable, offering an enticing array of items suitable for appetizers, most of which can be prepared in advance.

As a lover of cookbooks and the owner of over 450+...this one will have a little note inside that will direct my children not to give, sell or trade this one (should I predecease them!). Growing up Black in the 50's and 60's brought back sweet memories of MY "Church Lady" Mother and what a wonderful natural home cook she was! Thank you Ms. Miller, this one is a Keeper.

The book is full of lunch recipes that are appetizing, as well as portable and easy to prepare. Epstein lists sandwiches and salads that sound like something you would buy at a gourmet takeout place (i.e., a grilled vegetable and goat cheese sandwich). She also provides practical advice on how to shop and plan so that you have the ingredients for a tasty sandwich on hand.

All the recipes come with suggestions for accompaniments, substitutions and packaging (i.e., how to make sure your beautiful lunch is still beautiful when you go to eat it).

I am inspired.

I have a lot of appetizer books and most are a collection of the time-consuming, the wierd, and the boring. Not this one! Most are fairly simple and all are imaginative and delicious. Rose's restaurant was something I looked forward to on every visit to Portland and this gives me the opportunity to relive those delicious meals.

What a rare treat this little volume is! I had to pace myself to prolong the enjoyment. Reading it was like having a wonderful conversation with a kindred soul over a great cup of tea. Alexandra shares inspiration and wonderful recipes as an added bonus along with her great conversation.

This book ends up being a personal account of Ms. stoddard's day-to-day life, which is really far from interesting. As far as information on tea, it is sadly lacking and even, on occasion, presents inaccurate information; a much better choice would be Jane Pettigrew's The Tea Companion. If you want a disorganized, "dreamy" little book about nothing, this is it. The question arises: who would compose a work that is so self-absorbed?
