Christmas Cooking 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Wonderful collection of truly great recipes. My husband's favorite from his childhood, "Cowboy Cookies" is included. Beautiful photos and text--makes you want to visit Texas! You'll love this cooking book.

Just buy it. 5 out of 5 stars.

Of all the cookbooks I got this year for Christmas (they're my favorite holiday gift, even over jewelry), this was my most treasured. As a relocated Texan now living in NY, I was worried this would dissapoint and/or embarrass with a wrong impression of good Texas cooking. Nope. It's great.

I've fallen asleep with it in my lap several nights already!

    Editorial Review:

The annual Fredericksburg Christmas parade marks the beginning of the Hill Country's holiday season, which means the Pastry Queen is kicking into high gear at her Rather Sweet Bakery and Café. As party invitations pile up in the mailbox, Rebecca Rather is up to her elbows in sticky meringue, gooey chocolate, and a sleigh's worth of savory indulgences to meet the Texas-sized entertaining-to-go orders of her neighbors. In THE PASTRY QUEEN CHRISTMAS, Rebecca shares nearly a hundred traditional recipes reflecting her made-with-love-from-scratch philosophy and the tastes of small-town Texas. Tree-trimming, open houses, cookie decorating, and Santas running down Main Street . . . Christmas time is here.

Best Gingersnap Recipe Ever 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

There is a Gingersnap cookie recipe in this book that is amazing. I make them every holiday season for family and friends and everyone LOVES them and looks forward to eating them year-round. Highly recommended for the Gingersnaps alone!

Using it a lot 5 out of 5 stars.

I got this book off amazon not too long ago after I had checked it out at the library and really liked it. The pictures are great. I tried the easy tiramisu dessert- but I made a few substitutions. Don't. It wasn't that great, could be better as the original. The minty middle treasures didn't look anything like the picture. Didn't taste as good as I was hoping, either. My sister made the swedish nuts and liked it. I'll be making the peppermint bon bon brownies and the peppermint swirled cookies. There are just so many to try. Another con is that if you're looking for lighter recipes, this isn't the book. I'm on a small weight loss quest, and these are really fatty and sugary desserts. That's what makes them taste good, though.
Today my sister and I tried to make the Christmas Cottages with graham crackers, and it didn't work. The directions seem silly- they say dip the edges of the cracker in the frosting and it doesn't work. Also graham crackers aren't necessarily level, they have a little bend to them, so the don't stand together well. It's also really hard to cut a graham cracker- we kept breaking them trying to make the peak on the roof.
At any rate, I haven't tried even half of the things I want to yet, so... I still love the book. I haven't even experimented with the main meal recipes yet but looking forward to it. (It takes a lot longer to get through leftovers when it's only my husband and I trying to finish off the experiments.)

    Editorial Review:

Betty Crocker's New Christmas Cookbook is a colorful and creative read. At this hectic time of year, cooks can feel safe and secure in the capable hands of Ms. Crocker. Every imaginable Christmas dish is here--cakes, candies, breads, meats, and, thankfully, lots of vegetarian dishes (a group somewhat ignored in many holiday cookbooks). There are also innovative ideas for gift foods and wrapping. Whatever you're aiming for--a huge family feast or a quiet dinner for two--this Christmas book comes highly recommended. --Naomi Gesinger

This book is so charming! I received it as a gift from a dear friend many years ago and I re-read it every Christmas! Recipes, ideas, and holiday thoughts pulled together with Susan Branch's truly unique artistry make this a favorite.

After Thanksgiving dishes are done, this book is the first thing I reach for. 5 out of 5 stars.

As with Susan Branch's other seasonal books, I use this Christmas treasure to kick off the season! Serioualy, I've dog-earred some of the recipes that have become family traditions since I first got this book. I've learned how special it is to replace all sheets with fun holiday flannel sheets. I do much more than simply put up a tree these days. In short, I must attribute my refreshed zest for holiday living to re-reading this book every year before do anything else. (It's also a nice gift!)

Not Up To Snuff 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Like many of you, I collect these books year after year. This year was very disappointing. The book really is mainly recipes. I don't buy them for that, although the few I try are good. I buy this book mainly for the decorating and gift ideas. This year the book is really lacking in them. In years past they've shown how to decorate the outside of your house, the mantle, the table, and just about anywhere in a house that you could put a decoration. This year you basically have one mantle. That's it. Sorry, this book had me saying to myself, "I paid full price for this!!"

If you really want this book, buy it used or look at it first in the library before you make your decision.

    Editorial Review:

Readers flock to this gorgeous book year after year because its always filled with fresh ideas for fun-filled Christmas celebrationsin that special Southern Living way. Decorating, crafting, gift giving, cooking, party planningtheyre all here, with tips and tricks that will have family and friends thinking youve been preparing for months.

    Editorial Review:

With the infectious enthusiasm of a kid on Christmas morning, Mario Batali--who presides over a culinary empire that includes the popular Food Network television show Molto Mario, four acclaimed New York restaurants, and a wine store--presents four complete menus for the holidays and captures all the fun and festivity that epitomize Italian celebrations. True to the commitment to simple cooking evident in his first book, Simple Italian Food, the dishes here deliver maximum flavor and enjoyment without being overly complicated.

Batali's version of the famous Italian seafood extravaganza traditionally served on Christmas Eve--known as the Feast of Seven Fishes--includes no fewer than 15 enticing dishes. Marinated Fresh Anchovies are both surprisingly delectable and delightful in their simplicity. Salt Cod with Capers and Mint, Grilled Lobster with Herbs and Arugula, and Sea Bass Ravioli with Marjoram and Potatoes would each be showstoppers as the centerpiece of any meal. Served together, they comprise a truly unforgettable feast.

The Christmas Day menu is equally lavish, centering on a succulent boned turkey breast stuffed with chestnuts and prunes, while the New Year's Day spread is pure decadence. The latter begins innocently enough, with a refreshing aperitivo of tangerine juice, Compari, and soda, then proceeds through a parade of richly flavored dishes, from the hot-pepper-spiked Octopus in the Style of the Prostitutes of Napoli, to the meatball-filled "mythic pasta dome" known as Timpano di Maccheroni, to the prosciutto-wrapped Braised Pork Roll. An irresistible selection of dolci (sweets), including Cinnamon Chocolate Pudding with Pine Nuts and Waffle Cookies, rounds out the meal. New Year's Day welcomes a relaxed daylong open house replete with an ever-changing spread of antipasti, pasta, and dolci, most of which can be prepared at leisure and served at room temperature, enabling the hosts to enjoy the party as much as the guests.

Photos, along with helpful wine suggestions and practical advice on technique, accompany each menu. Throughout, Batali paints a portrait of his Italian-American family that reminds readers that the simple joy of being together is what the holidays are really about. The 60 simple yet elegant recipes can be mixed, matched, and adapted for any occasion. Served together or separately, each is cause for celebration. --Robin Donovan
