Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.

Lots of creative ideas. The photos are wonderful.Haven't tried the recipes yet. I'm more interested in the ideas and the way they've suggested giving foods as gifts. Their ideas for presentation are delightful. These can be used for your own food items as well. It's kind of an heirloom book...timeless ideas for giving tasteful gifts. I love it!

I will deffentily buy this one to use over and over again. 5 out of 5 stars.

The colored photos really help with the projects. I started marking my favorite pages, but then quit since I liked nearly all of them.

This book will help me to really personalize some small gifts for teachers ect.

I have already E-mailed the title to two friends so that they my also know about this little treasure I found.

fruitcake memories of truman capote & sook 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 24 people found this review helpful.

Marie Rudisill is absolutely fabulous with this fruitcake book. This is by far the most wonderful cook book i have ever seen in my entire life. I was also able to read other of Rudisills books and she is one of the best writers there is and has ever been. Two thumbs up to Rudisill on the Jay Leno show. She was funny keeping Jay and Mel Gibson in line. I strongly recommend everyone to try this delightful fruitcake book. Check out The Southern Haunting of Truman Capote, it was inspiring learning about his childhood in the south.

Editorial Review:

Truman Capote's humble yet legendary aunt, Marie Rudisill, knows that fruitcakes are meant to be enjoyed not only during the Christmas holidays but year-round. The roots for her love of fruitcake in all its varieties run much deeper than sheer nostalgia for old-fashioned holidays. Rudisill's mythic stories of the Old South provide a poignant glimpse into holidays of a more gracious era while shedding new insight into the life of one of the most significant writers of the twentieth century. The twenty-two time-tested recipes in this book range from chocolate and rum fruitcakes to thematic cakes such as the Robert E. Lee fruitcake and one said to have come from Martha Washington's personal cookbook.

Editorial Review:

Ornaments, edibles, and gifts fill the pages of Family Circle Big Book of Christmas, some in fairly traditional style with Victorian flavor, others with a bit more of a country orientation. Projects include a mantel full of elegant stockings, a wreath heavily encrusted with buttons, folk-art treasure boxes adorned with felt hearts, and a pair of host and hostess vests boasting sporty red and gold stripes.

Directions are somewhat brief but generally adequate; the materials sections, however, are hard to decipher at a glance because all the items are run together in a paragraph instead of separated into a list. Although not terribly inspired, the photos are reasonably clear, and most projects are relatively easy. The bulk of the book is devoted to recipes, such as a full brunch, a complete Christmas dinner, a round-robin dinner party, and lots and lots of desserts. --Amy Handy

Reads like a cozy nook. 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My mother gave me this book for Christmas 8 years ago. I literally haven't put it down since! It not only contains recipes that were (and still are) cherished from a generation who knew what life was really all about, but the incidental tidbits of how life was lived long ago is absolutely priceless in this age when things are so inside out and everyone is looking for security and peace. The poems that were dear to the hearts of the depression era pull at the heartstrings, and the wonderful, descriptive details of families and friends that seemed to gather for any reason place the reader in that special time. The recipes are delicious and made with the easy-make-do-with-what-you-have confidence that our grandmothers prided themselves on. From Aunt Mabel's Cranberry Bread to Uncle Bud's Vinegar Pie, they're all recipes that would be welcome on any of today's contemporary tables. Granted, many of us wouldn't dream of making pie crust with lard....but one wouldn't hurt! If anyone has already read The Pioneer Lady's Country Kitchen, than The Pioneer Lady's Country Christmas is a must have for those collecting unusual and homey cookbooks. So stoke up the woodstove, grab a cup of hot chocolate and a cat for your lap, and read this book. You'll be transported to a wonderful memory!

Editorial Review:

Rekindle the memories of an old-fashioned Christmas with The Pioneer Lady's Country Christmas. With 250 delicious homey recipes for main dishes, desserts, pies, cakes, and beverages, it will add sparkle and cheer to the holiday season.

Good cookbook 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Christmas is such a special time of the year. It's a celebration of Christ's birth, a time to connect with family and friends and of course, there's the yummy food.

Each recipe in The Family Christmas Cookbook is accompanied by a story or poem from Christmas: The Annual of Christmas Literature and Art that began in 1931 and was published for sixty-five years. The legacy begun those many years ago is continued in this global cookbook with recipes from around the world.

Smorekringle from Denmark brings memories of my Danish grandmother's kitchen at Christmas--the warmth, the fragrance of the food, the singing and storytelling. While making this delectable pastry with almond filling, read 'Blowing of the Yule.'

Coffee Braids are a sweetbread made with cardamom and originates from Finland. It's yummy and while devouring it, read the story Preparing for Christmas.

The Almond Torte is a meringue layer cake with chocolate frosting and almonds. It's mouth-watering good and originates in Serbia. The Serbian Blessing is beautiful.

And the Danish Ris Almande (sweet rice and almond pudding) gives me a rush of nostalgia for Christmases past. I want to return to my childhood and A Danish Christmas Eve Dinner. Perhaps this is a part of my heritage I can share with my grandchildren.

Oh, then there is Hogmanay Shortbread from Scotland, Sandbakkels from Scandinavia, Kourabiethes from Greece, Krumkake from Sweden & Scandinavia (one of my childhood favorites), Noche from Italy, Kanya (West Africa) and so much more. While you enjoy these scrumptious dishes, enjoy reading about the traditions and rituals of the countries where the recipes originate.

A delightful cookbook that will smack you in the face with your past--and you'll love every minute of it. Oh, and then there is the food. It's a good thing.

Armchair Interviews says: Another yummy addition to your cookbook collection.

an excellent source for Christmas recipes 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Camille Glenn's book of old fashioned Christmas recipes is a pure delight. Not only are the recipes clear, easy to read and tasty when prepared, but the format is "cook friendly" and easy to follow. Most ingredients for the recipes can be found at the grocery store, with a few exceptions. I've owned and read many cookbooks over the years, and I would highly recommend this Louisville, Kentucky cooking teacher's book as either a gift for an aspiring chef or as a nice Christmas gift for anyone who enjoys fine cuisine and Southern hospitality.

Editorial Review:

In this beautifully illustrated collection of over 200 recipes and more than 25 holiday stories, Ferdie Pacheco and Luisita Sevilla Pacheco create a holiday melting pot of immigrant lore and cuisine in America. The book begins in Ybor City, where Ferdie Pacheco grew up in the 1930s and '40s, an immigrant utopia of Cubans, Spaniards, Jews, and Italians in Tampa, Florida. Pacheco's own Latin heritage sets the stage for the book's focus on Christmas Eve, or Nochebuena -- for Latin families often the biggest feast day of the season, when friends and family sit around a table laden with traditional dishes, telling stories that grow more colorful each year. As the Pachecos know, however, the beauty of American holiday celebrations is their rich diversity, and so they range well beyond Ybor City, collecting recipes and stories -- old and new -- from Cuban, Spanish, Italian, Sicilian, Mexican, and Jewish friends around the country. A master story-teller, Pacheco recounts tales that are by turns hilarious, moving, and inspiring. Known to many as "The Fight Doctor", Pacheco includes a delightful Nochebuena story about his daughter Tina and Muhammad Ali. Recipes are organized by nationality and type of food, including appetizers, salads, gravies and sauces, soups and stews, meats, game, seafood, pasta and dumpling dishes, rice and bean dishes tamales arid chili, vegetables, jellies, desserts, drinks.
