This is what a cooking book should be like. It is filled with humor! This should be given out to everyone before Thanksgiving! The author knows her stuff, and stuffing! In all seriousness, you should check it out. I am going to buy a copy for my mother who loves her Thanksgiving meal.
Part cookbook, part disaster stories that will have you rolling and rolling your eyes (people are really pretty crazy, this book proves it).
Highly recommended!

This book really is everything it claims to be - 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

from the glossy full page pictures, to the simple yet elegant recipes. Katie Brown gives us a dinner party to host for every month. Each month has a specific theme which she carries through the recipes and table decorations and setting. Three projects are given for the table layout for each month, and these are all so simple and inexpensive that even I could do them - and that is saying a lot. I do not craft.

The book is very beautiful, I will make sure to keep it out of the kitchen when I am using the recipes though, mine tend to get encrusted in all sorts of unidentifiable substances.

One of the really great things about this book is that the dinners were actually prepared and eaten by Katie and her guests. The pictures of them enjoying the food are fun and natural. (I especially love that Katie is not made-up to within an inch of her life, but is photographed in her natural state - freckles and all.)

I could not, of course, do a review of a cookbook without trying one of the recipes. So, today I made the Honey-spiced almonds to eat on our salad for dinner. The instructions were clear and simple. The ingredients I had on hand. The finished product absolutely delicious.

The Best "Do Ahead" 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I go to this book time & time again. The biggest praise I have is the preparation. Having your snacks done in advance is a big plus. This has the most realistic recipes for a "chef & hostess" in one. It really is worth having. My favorites are the "Ginger Chicken Cakes", "Fennel marinated Feta" & "Filo Tartlets". If you are looking at: Small Bites by Jen Joyce is good too, but it is based more on "small bites". It shows good do aheads too, but lots of the recipe's need silverware & plates/bowls to serve. Hors D'Oeuvres is better suited for picking up with your hand and popping in your mouth with only a bamboo skewer or cocktail napkin needed.

Editorial Review:

From spicy cilantro shrimp to eggplant caviar crostini, this uniquely practical guide includes full-color, step-by-step instructions to ensure successful party food whatever the occasion. AUTHOR BIO: At the age of 13, Eric Treuille began the apprenticeship that led him to master the art of classic French cooking. Work as a chef has taken him from Paris to London, where he is the director of London's Books for Cooks cooking school. He is the author of DK's Hors d'Oeuvres, Pasta, and Ultimate Bread. Victoria Blashford-Snell trained at Le Cordon Bleu, and runs a highly successful catering company.

Some good information, some problems 3 out of 5 stars.
11 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Overall a good resource, especially for the price.

    Pros:
-- excellent lists and tips for making lists
-- good section on portions and quantities
    -- interesting menu ideas
-- tips on how to find help and when to use hired help
    -- good decoration ideas

    Cons:
-- some of the recipes don't work
-- most recipes serve 8 people. If your party is for 50 it would be helpful to have recipes that serve more people or more specific information on how to scale the recipes (both those in her books and favorites from other sources).
-- could use more sketches/diagrams on table settings. The few she has are good. Possible layouts for rooms and buffets would be helpful as well
-- some information is obvious or redundant

The entire book is great fun. The recipes are genuinely tasty and even have hilarious names! Plus, the book is chock full of photographs and trivia. Even if you don't cook, any fan of Oz will find plenty to love. And if you're a kitchen wizard who isn't into Oz so much, you'll pick up lots of delicious new ideas. Makes a great gift. A treasure written by two wonderful people!

Fun book - Great recipes! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is great fun! Movie-themed cookbooks often fail, as usually the recipes are simply a collection of cleverly named dishes with no other relation to the film. This book, however, succeeds wonderfully as the recipes are all from people associated with The Wizard of Oz in one way or another. Filled with rare photographs of all phases of Oz-mania (from the books, to the films, to the various theatre productions), the recipes are surprisingly good. My favorite is Barry Van Dyke's (co-host of the CBS Oz broadcast in '61-62) Shrimp Salad - perfect on a hot summer day, this dish gets rave reviews every time I serve it! A must-have for all Oz fans, Judy Garland fans, or anyone who loves to cook!
