Why on earth is this out of print??? 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is elegant, simple (to the point of being foolproof), and full of variety. It's one of my very favorite cookbooks. I wanted to send it to a friend as a present, and I was astounded to find that it's unavailable, because it deserves to be a best seller! I hope it comes back soon.

This REALLY IS the best cookbook I own 5 out of 5 stars.

I love to cook and have many many cookbooks - this is the one I take with me when I travel to a cottage - I know it will have something for every time - the company, the family, the lazy night - all delicious and nothing too intricate - you can put together a great meal relatively quickly- I particularly love the suggested menus in the margin on each page - makes life pretty easy - lots of "a bit different' touches in this book - I now give it regularly as a gift, which is how I got it! buy this book if you like to cook!

Editorial Review:

This ia a book atypical of other gourmet fare. The 400+ easy-to-prepare recipes are perfect for family meals, casual get-togethers, or special occasions. The recipes range from tantalizing appetizers to sinful desserts. quick and easy sauces, chutneys, and seasonings add that special touch to dishes without the handwringing so often accompanying complicated recipes. The book is user-friendly and contains menus for putting together well-balanced, tasty meals. The recipes encompass both the ethnic and traditional foods and flavors of the 1990s and will turn any meal into a culinary event. This is the companion book to The Uncommon Gourmet.

this is good stuff 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 25 people found this review helpful.

I love this cook book. It's simple and easy to follow. Bob explains why it's best to use certain ingredients that will make a difference in the overall flavor, like using sea salt or fresh herbs. I love the black olive spread, the eggplant spread and the caesar salad. But, I also learned some great simple techniques like using a good wooden bowl for making the caesar. I also liked the tips at the end of each recipe, for wine, music etc. This cook book has so much to offer, good food, lots of useful tips, great artwork, and it's so much fun to read.

Surreal Gourmet: good, quick recipes 4 out of 5 stars.

Bob Blumer's Surreal Gourmet is one of the most-used cookbooks I have. Blumer's irreverent style is matched only by his recipes. Particularly good are the ceasar salad, steak au poivre, and herb butter, just to name a few. Bob's art is worth the price alone.

Editorial Review:

This irreverent collection of 25 delicious recipes, each accompanied by an original, full-color work of surreal art, is the ultimate in hip kitchen entertainment. Written by Hollywood music manager Bob Blumer, The Surreal Gourmet is a cookbook with a sense of humor. All of the intensely flavored dishes can be prepared in less than 30 minutes, and each includes a wine selection and music to cook by.

Editorial Review:

The renowned chef of New York's Verbena restaurant shows how to build a dish—and a menu—from vegetables on up in this innovative cookbook that looks at flavors through a botanical prism.

What do Poached Eggs in Asparagus Nests, Leek and Apple Hash, and Sauteed Scallops with Onion Pan Gravy have in common? Aspargus, leeks, and onions (along withe shallots, garlic, and chives) are all part of the botanical family Liliaceae.

Diane Forley's fascination with the properties and groupings of fruits and vegetables—in the garden, in the kitchen, and on the plate—suffuses The Anatomy of a Dish. But this is not a vegetable or vegetarian cookbook. It is a collection of the richly flavorful recipes Forley serves at her restaurant, illuminated by the culinary and botanical explorations that have led to her celebrated cooking style.

Forley, one of America's rising chefs, has arranged her book to reflect her conviction that vegetables, fruits, grains, and legumes define sensibility in cooking. Part I, which serves as the book's foundation, looks at vegetables one at a time, and details some of Forley's favoirte ways to prepare them. Cooking techniques are explained and applied to an array of vegetables to form side dishes and starting points fo rmore comlete meals. For example, artichokes are braised, shaped into griddle cakes, baked as gratins, and fried as snack chips; mushrooms are sauteed, pureed, and transformed into Forley's own Worcestershire sauce. A plentitude of notes alongside each recipe offer serving suggestions and menu-building links.

From single vegetables, the book moves on to vegetable combinations in salads, soups and stews, pastas, tarts, souffles, and breads. And then, fish, poultry, and meat are added to create dishes that The New York Times praised for being delicious yet "disarmingly simple."

Seasonal availability of ingredients inspires the recipes in the dessert chapter. These are alluring treates on their own, at any time, but they thoughtfully complement the savory dishes that precede them.

Cooking from this immensely engaging book, you'll come to expect the unexpected and be thrilled by each encounter. For example, you'll learn how plants are classified and marvel at the notion that the potato, eggplant, tomato, petunia, and the tobacco plant have much in common, starting with a five-petaled star-shaped flower. (The hugely toxic belladonna also has the same shaped flower. Is it any wonder that the Old World was reluctant to try these New World fruits and vegetables?)

Cooks who care to broaden their culinary horizons will find this side excursion into the world of botanical family trees as delicious as they'll find Forley's recipes, with their straightforward charm and exceptional soaring flavors.

Highly enjoyable 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Particularly enjoyable for her rather obscure selection of an alphabet by which to write about food. If you want more, I recommend the compendium The Art of Eating, by the same author. This woman really enjoyed food, even the simplest meal, which might even be eaten alone and enjoyed more for the experience.

Editorial Review:

In Alphabet for Gourmets, M.F.K. Fisher arranges a selection of her essays in a whimsical way that reveals the breadth and depth of her passion. From A for (dining) alone to Z for Zakuski, "a Russian hors d'oeuvre," Fisher alights on both longtime obsessions and idiosyncratic digressions. As usual, she liberates her readers from caution and slavish adherence to culinary tradition-- and salts her writings with a healthy dose of humor.

wonderful cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

It is one of the cookbooks I turn to most often. Every recipe I have tried turns out exactly as it should. I have many fond memories of the Chuck Muer restaurant chain and all the wonderful food they served for years. This book is well worth the money.

Editorial Review:

More new recipes from the famed Chuck Muer restaurants that gourmet and amateur chefs can recreate in their own kitchens. Included are famous recipes of the Muer restaurants: "Texas Barbecue Whitefish... The Shaft Baby Back Ribs... Swordfish Picata... Martha's Vineyard Raspberry Chicken... Braised Lamb Shanks..."

All recipes and ingredients have been carefully reviewed and scaled down for the home cook. Each section is introduced by a brief history with interesting stories about the origins of various dishes. Throughout are tidbits and tips for preparing not only good food--but a "simply great" dining experience.

Added to the latest Muer cookbook is a tribute to the late Chuck and Betty Muer, founders of the CA Muer Corporation.

A Goldmine of Southern Cuisine 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Ahh, the Gulf Gourmet...when I saw that this gem of a cookbook had not been reviewed, I simply could not resist. This cookbook is a sentimental favorite of mine, since it was my very first cookbook when I was growing up in Mississippi. I made my first Shrimp Gumbo from a recipe in this book. But sentimentality aside, don't let the name of the book fool you - in addition to the many seafood recipes contained within, it is also jam packed with recipes in the following categoreis: Appetizers, Soups, Salads, Vegetables, Poultry, Game, Meats, Desserts, Cakes, and Pies. There is something to please everyone in this book. I am thrilled that it is still in print! So please, do not hesitate to add this to your collection. From the Banana Milkshake to the Cheesy Tuna Bunwiches, to the Shrimp Gumbo and Mississippi Mud Cake, you are sure to find something to delight the palate in classic Southern style!

Used so much, I may have to buy a replacement soon! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book about a year ago after I decided I wanted to be a vegetarian, but had no clue how to prepare meals w/o meat. Hinman's book is definately full of great ideas. I have used so many of the recipes that the pages of the books are stained or torn from so much use.
The book is divided into several sections including: salads and dressings, grains, pastas, stove top dishes, casseroles, breads, fruits, vegetables, soups, desserts, and beverages. Definately full of recipes that have plenty of protein w/o tons of fat or calories. It is so easy to make some of these. Most recipes can be done in under 1/2 an hour. Even my texan, meat eating family has enjoyed the cooking from this recipe book. It is a MUST BUY!

Editorial Review:

Bobbie Hinman offers more than 300 tantalizing recipes using whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and a variety of legumes. Among the mouthwatering dishes are Pizza-Style Pasta, Grilled Portobello Sandwich, Iced Maple Coffee Float, and Fabulous Berry Party Trifle. Like all of Hinman’s books, this new volume includes a detailed nutritional breakdown showing calorie, fat, fiber, sodium, and carbohydrate counts. This edition contains 20 percent new material, including special icons to indicate ovo, lacto, ovo-lacto, and vegan recipes. Each chapter also contains suggested menus.

Uncomplicated "Gourmet" 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

In a perfect world, most of us who know and enjoy good food would spend hours shopping and then lovingly prepare outstanding meals.
But we live in the real world, where assembling 35 ingredients and spending a few hours perfecting garnishes is a physical impossibility for most of us. Work, kids, aging parents and the everyday flood of must-do's often dictate a compromise between what we like to cook (and eat) and the effort we can put into it.
Anderson has proven "gourmet" is not a synonym for "complicated," and in this books shares with us her culinary strategies to enjoy cooking and serving elegant, tasty dishes prepared with only 5 ingredients. And Cream of Mushroom Soup is not an "ingredient" in Anderson's kitchen! We're not talking tuna casserole here.
Yes, it sounded too simple to me, too, but her recipes actually call for only 5 ingredients (excluding salt & pepper)and taste like you spent a weekend in the kitchen. I recommend the crabcakes, which are to die for!
This book is on my Christmas list for all my friends who love food -- but can't spend days assembling exotic ingredients.

Editorial Review:

Gourmet Cooking with 5 Ingredients presents gourmet recipes for appetizers, salads, entrees, side dishes and desserts… all deliciously the best… all with only 5 ingredients. Prepare these recipes using the best ingredients and enjoy the luxury and rewards of gourmet cooking. This wonderful book has easy steps, easy-to-understand instructions, Chef’s notes, tips, options and special information and also provides extraordinary menus.
