Another great book from Fr. Dominic 5 out of 5 stars.

Once again Father Dominic has provided insights into how to incorporate spirituality with everyday life. This book teaches how to satisfy both physical and spiritual hungers simultaneously.

Good Stuff 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I find Fr. Dom is really great at bread recipes. Enjoy baking and his reflections are always worthwhile.

Editorial Review:

Father Dominic Garramone, acclaimed author and host of Breaking Bread with Father Dominic, weaves together holiday reflections and recipes in 'Tis the Season to be Baking. In this new collection, Father Dominic relates nearly two-dozen holiday baking traditions to scripture and shows that holiday preparations can seem less like drudgery if we can see the purpose behind them. Did you know that the French meal fougasse represents the genealogy of Jesus or that two very different Christmas breads the traditional German stollen and the more recent Saint Bede tradition of "Bambino Bread" represent the Christ Child in swaddling clothes? 'Tis the Season to be Baking imparts such wisdom as it takes bakers, holiday traditionalists, and Father Dominic fans beyond bread yet again.

Not as creative as the Christmas series 3 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I was very excited about this book when I first heard about it. I love the Christmas series and have several other cookbooks from them and love them dearly! This book just didnt live up to the other books I have though.
Most of the recipes in this book seem to be repetitions of recipes from their other books. There are a few things that are different and new but if you have any of their other books you probably have a recipe for 90% of the items offered.
Also the crafting ideas just arent as inspiring as their Christmas crafts. I have enjoyed decorating my home for the holidays with the help of Gooseberry but this just didnt have the same origionality as the other books.
Maybe they just spread themselves too thin trying to cover one whole year in one book. But I think if you have any of their other books than you can pass on this one.

Editorial Review:

Catholic culture with an English slant 4 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This is a great addition to your cookbook library if, like me, you are greedy for ideas on integrating the Catholic liturgical year into your family life and traditions. It will be of particular interest to those with British heritage, as it explains many customs and provides recipes peculiar to Irish, Scottish, Welsh, but especially English traditions.

Editorial Review:

When it was first published in 1986 A Book of Feasts and Seasons was the first popular attempt to recapture the lost traditions surrounding our major feasts and festivals. Since then it has gone through many printings, and has become a well loved source book all over the world. For every occasion of the Christian Year - from the traditional celebration of Michaelmas and Martinmas to making an Advent Wreath, from wassailing to the full story of St Wenceslaus - A Book of Feasts and Seasons remains an essential part of the family library. In today's fast moving world it gets harder and harder for people to keep in touch with their Christian history and customs. This book allows families, schools and church groups to do just that, and to have fun while doing it. Joanna Bogle is a well-known Catholic journalist and broadcaster. She often appears on the television station EWTN.

For candy lovers everywhere... 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This book is not only gorgeous, the recipes are easy and taste out of this world. I made turtles first thing, and was astonished at how easy it was. Course, then I had to eat the 48 turtles I just made, which wasn't too difficult! The instructions are simple to follow, and the results are spectacular. I recommend it to anyone who loves candy or loves making special gifts. Top notch!!

Editorial Review:

Confection perfection is easy to achieve with the step-by-step help of dessert expert Lou Seibert Pappas. Decked with Frankie Frankeny’s winsome photography and more than 40 recipes, The Christmas Candy Book is the stuff holiday dreams are made of. It includes Yuletide classics like buttery English Toffee and nutty Panforte di Siena as well as inventive dainties like Honey-Lavender Drops and adorable Marzipan Piglets. Bursting with holiday cheer, The Christmas Candy Book is a sweet success from cover to cover.

Want to be a better cook? 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Cook's Illustrated is a no-nonsense, incredibly detailed, well-written, well-researched, and fussy-about-quality-food magazine written for American home cooks and foodies, not gourmet cooks (although the food you'll end up cooking might qualify as gourmet) or food faddists. The annuals include all of the magazines for that year bound into hardcovers and handily indexed. Quick Tips showcase reader tips for everything under the sun and in the kitchen. Recipes may include everything from making a better pot roast to Indian food. Equipment reviews rank essential (and some not so essential) kitchen tools.

Each recipe features a description of the process the author went through to get the master recipe, usually including any interesting food science tidbits along the way (for instance, how heat, in the instance of cooked food, may affect the protein molecules, etc.), which makes for some fascinating reading; it's not unheard of for me to read that part of the recipe out loud to admiring dinner guests at their request.

"My" chicken and dumplings have been pronounced "the best ever", "my" pork roasts have been called "to die for", and "my" roast turkey is looked forward to by anyone who has ever come to my table during the holidays.

I have collected each annual, eagerly looking forward to each one even if I've received the magazine on subscription, and each one makes me a better cook -- if you want to become known as a fabulous home cook, these annuals will put you ahead of the pack!
