A book for all occasions 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The menus planned in the book are delicious. Each is catagorized under a different event or holiday, but I've used them for not so special events too. There are also wonderful decorating and entertaining ideas for all seasons. The paella is wonderful!

One of her worst - a cut & paste job 1 out of 5 stars.

This is old articles from her magazine and the advice was not very good. There are better books.

One of my favorite books for entertaining 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Well done and illustrated, these are features from the early days of the magazine. I can personally vouch for the pear bread pudding and the torta di riso--a lot of work but like a lot of things, WELL worth the effort. I don't know if I could do all of those things at once for one activity, especially the wedding at home. But in addition to all the recipes and chapters, it's idea-inspiring. Which is what Martha is all about (that, and the stock market!)

Editorial Review:

Hundreds of the best ideas for 12 holidays throughout the year--from New Year's to Halloween--collected from the pages of Martha Stewart Living. Each menu is lavishly illustrated and explained with step-by-step instructions. Sidebars cover such topics as lighting an outdoor party, dyeing Easter eggs, and the perfect cakes to make every occasion memorable. Full-color photographs.

Cook's Illustrated, 1999 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Combining 1999s' Cooks Illustrated magazine in one volumn; a must if you can wait 1 whole year to read this exceptional magazine. Not "just another cookbook"; but, a great resourse for both beginners and advanced cooks alike; with detailed instructions on recipes, cooking tips, resourse reviews, test kitchen results, hard to find cooking items. A must have technique book. And the editorials make great reading. One of my favorite quotes comes from a 1999 editorial: "Good cooks are masters of many things, improving and substituting to achieve modest ends. We should stand firm in front of the stove, feet planted in knowledge and experience, not as tourists surrounded by the unfamiliar". That sums up the importance of having this book.

Fantastic 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I love the magazine, and I love the option to get the year's recipes in a hardcover edition... I've never eaten better!

Cook's 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

A good way to get a whole year of Cook's Illustrated in bound form and cheaper than buying the magazine by subscription. I got 4 of them and got free shipping, so how can you go wrong?
One can learn a lot from this source, and being in a bound, book format is icing on the cake.
The only thing is, it's hard to locate individual tips or recipes in such a large format, so have your bookmarks ready!

Editorial Review:

An indispensable cooking reference including every issue of Cook's Illustrated from 1999 in an all-inclusive, hardcover volume.

Great cook book!! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

If anyone is at all seriously interested in Polish/Eastern European cooking, then this is your book. Rob Strybel is also known as "the Polish chef" because of his profound knowledge of Polish cuisine and cultural history. This book is not just another cookbook about regional foods but it is an insight to a great cultural Polish heritage throughout European history. One can experience the influence of various countries such as Germany, Italy, Russia and France on Polish cuisine just by reading this fascinating book, this is not simply a compilation of recipes but rather an historical summary of Polish society seen through the eyes of an accomplished chef..

Editorial Review:

This book acquaints readers with traditional Polish foods associated with various occasions and furnished countless cooking tips and serving suggestions. The clearly written recipes facilitate the preparation of the dishes and their incorporation in the Polish-American mainstream culture. Calendar of Polish Festivities is devoted to those holidays and events connected to a specific time of year. Polish Rites of Passage focuses on life's milestones -- the family occasions that take place at various times of year. This "instruction manual for the culturally aware Polish American" offers over 400 recipes, along with a lexicon of basic foods and culinary concepts, ingredients and procedures, and sample menus.

Repeats 2 out of 5 stars.

As in most books from Cooksillustrated recipes already appeared in their other publications - nothing new!

A great book from ATK 2006! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I have recently become an enthusiast of America's Test Kitchen and watch the show on a regular basis. The material is not 100% brand spanking new but meant to be a companion to what is done on TV, specifically the 2006 series (no not 2003 like one reviewer wrote).

As it's a companion book, the sections are broken out by episode and not ingredient. There are several pages of explanation with each episode detailing the trials and tribulations undergone by the fabulous Test Kitchen staff. Some many not care that the ATK staff stumbled upon an old Julia Child method to draw moisture out of fish but I was fascinated. There are also lots of honest product reviews which is a refreshing change for those who watch the TV chefs and never get an actual glimpse of the products and brands used.

I made a perfect Fish Meuniere with Browned Butter and Lemon the first time out with a perfect crunchy brown coating. A few other successful recipes was the Seared Tuna, Inexpensive Pan-Seared Steaks, and the Asparagus, Ham, and Gruyere Frittata.

This book helps teach effective methods for better cooking. Not just how to follow directions but how to become a better chef.

Editorial Review:

Just what makes a Southern Christmas so special? Is it the festiveness of the South's acclaimed hospitality? What accounts for its unmistakable charm? Emyl Jenkins writes that the answer lies in the South's rich traditions and heritage. For Christmas in the South is not just a day -- it is a season. All other seasons pale before the joys of Christmas as it has been observed through the centuries, from the Colonial days to the Civil War to the present. Christmas traditions in the South are deeply cherished, but you don't have to be Southern born and bred to enjoy a Southern Christmas.

In Southern Christmas, Emyl Jenkins offers the timeless stories and histories, the sentimental lore and celebrations inherent to the region. In these pages are heartwarming and cheerful accounts that will bring smiles and gentle memories of your own Christmases to mind: mile-high stacks of grandmother's best china taken down from pantry shelves for yuletide parties and scrumptious meals...magnolia boughs, longleaf pine, red-berried hollies, and deep green boxwood gathered for wreaths and garlands. Indeed, decorations on Southern doors, windows, even tucked-away niches turn every scene into Christmas cards to greet friends and strangers alike.

Southern Christmas is a book you will cuddle up with by the fire and read aloud to your family. Emyl Jenkins takes you on a Southern Christmas journey from Maryland to Texas with more than 250 stunningfull-colorphotographs. She visits private homes, museums and restorations, grand hotels, and charming inns in her chapters on Southern Christmas trees, decorations, food, parties, weddings, gifts, and music. Woven through the text are Emyl's "Gifts to the Reader," providing beautiful decorating and luscious recipe ideas to brighten every home at Christmas. Emyl invites you into her home for Christmas dinner, takes you on a colorful tour of Opryland, and on a leisurely stroll in historic Williamsburg.

Emyl Jenkins' Southern Christmas is a Christmas treasure dedicated to all who share the joy, the mirth, and the love of the season.

My favorite cookbook for baking 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I bought this cookbook last year, after the holidays, on sale. Starting in the fall of this year, I started trying several of the recipes. The maple pumpkin pie that I made at Thanksgiving is simply the best pumpkin pie I've ever had. Period. The savory apple and onion tart gets rave reviews from my guests as a first course. The brownie terrine is fabulous. And, oh, the warm strawberry jam scones and breakfast quiche make show-stopper courses at breakfast or brunch.

I'm buying more for gifts this year. It's one of those cookbooks that's really fun to read and inspiring. Makes you want to give the gift of your baked goods to friends over the holidays, or better yet to invite them over.

Highly recommended. Enjoy!

Editorial Review:
