Making Life Easy using Southern Living Cookbooks 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I made a fantistic discovery when a co-workers loaned me her copy of "Christmas with Southern Living Cookbook," Volume 3, 1999 Ed. Within 1 week, I had tried out four recipes with marvelous results. The shopping lists were most helpful. My family was elated that I prepared what they called "Sunday Dinners" during the week. I found using the recipes to be a "no-fail" task, very easy to follow and produced "fine dining."

Editorial Review:

Two hundred holiday recipes from the pages of Southern Living cover everything from appetizers to desserts, with complete holiday menus, shopping lists, and helpful cooking tips.

Repackaged prepared foods 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I was INCREDIBLY disappointed with this book purchase - especially because I paid FULL PRICE for it. I have absolutely NO USE for it. Why?
Why pay money for a book that simply takes prepackaged cookie and cake mixes, and adds a handful of nuts or dried fruit, (thus, making it "homemade") to give away? Anyone with the smallest amount of natural creativity could do this on their own, without the instruction of a cookbook. Let me give you an example: One of the "recipes" in this book is for lollipops.
You melt down other lollipops or pieces of hard candy and drop a stick in the puddle. WOW. That is CRAFTY. How ridiculous. Even worse, - as you will see by the illustration, - the "homemade" 'lollipop' looks disgusting. The stick is about four times as thick as the paper-thin puddle of liquified old hard candy. I wouldn't DARE give such a thing away as a GIFT.
Only a handful of recipes in this book are actually scratch-made from ingredients. The premise of this book is dressing up premade prepackaged foods from your local grocery store, and slapping some notions from the craft store on a glass jar or paper box. While some of the presentation ideas are original and attractive, in general it will prove a grave disappointment to an experienced cook.
I have given this book two stars because it does present lovely photo illustrations of every "recipe", and may give you inspiration for packaging and presenting your best recipes as gifts...... but if you have any creative talent and cooking skill whatsoever, - I advise you to seek out another book on this subject. It is not worth the cost of the book.
Should you be interested in the simplicity and economical value (the craft notions to dress the package will cost more than the food you are preparing)found in this book, - PLEASE- buy a USED copy, - it isn't worth more than $3 bucks. This is definitely a publication for a very inexperienced cook - and it is only for such a one I would recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

Bless This Food is a unique menu cookbook that combines wonderful menus and recipes with table prayers, food customs, and religious and cultural traditions. The menus are for many occasions—traditional gatherings, religious celebrations, ethnic festivals, life passages, and get-togethers with friends.

Organized by seasons, Bless This Food is eclectic in its choice of cuisines—from French, Italian, English, American, Jewish, and Irish to Native American, African American, and Hispanic. The occasions celebrated are also eclectic and culturally diverse, celebrating the many traditions of Americans. The main religious celebrations of the Christian and Jewish traditions are included. The authors' personal interests are reflected in their choices of such occasions as Winston Churchill's Birthday Breakfast, Claude Monet's Birthday, A Jane Austen Holiday Lunch, Robert Burns Night, and Blessings in Deed, in which a meal is prepared for another person or family.

Beautifully and elegantly designed and illustrated with the sketches of Tonya Young, Bless This Food acknowledges the sacred nature of the everyday pleasures of food and table.

Lovely& Practical Large Format Holiday Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This is a really lovely large format book for holiday baking, entertaining, and gifts from the kitchen. It has little, or perhaps no, redundancy from Bon Appetit magazine, so there is plenty for subscribers and non-subscribers to enjoy. The book has 17 chapters. Four chapters address one entire holiday feast each, with each meal in a different style. Five chapters provide recipes especially suited for other holiday season festivities such as a tree-trimming supper, a dessert buffet, a cocktail party, and an open house. Other chapters are dedicated to specific types of food, rather than entire meals. These include chapters on: breads, cookies and cranberry sauces as well as Christmas puddings, a buche de noel, an elaborate chocolate cake, and a croquembouche, whose chapters include step-by-step illustrated instructions on how to construct these holiday masterpieces. The "Gifts from the Kitchen" chapter offers an array of 22 recipes for cookies, candies, sauces, jams, breads and more that are easy to make and sure to impress. Every recipe isn't accompanied by a photograph, but there are many large color photos throughout the book. The paper is also of very nice quality. "Bon Appetit Christmas" is a worthy addition to the library of any cook and makes a lovely gift for those who like to bake or entertain.

Editorial Review:

From the editors of America's most popular food and entertainment magazine comes a sumptuous collection of more than 125 new and classic Christmas recipes to help readers celebrate the holidays with style, ease, and a table full of luscious foods. The recipes are accompanied by do-ahead tips and serving suggestions. Color photos throughout.

This one was okay, but I was not too impressed because it was a 2003 edition. Some good recipes included and that helped.

Lack of photos mars this presentation of great recipes. 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

As always, Bon Appetit offers up recipes that are well-written and delicious. The scope of this book isn't limited to Christmas. If covers the whole holiday season - Thanksgiving to New Years. There are wonderful menus for entertaining in a variety of settings and many supplemental recipes. There is also a section on treats to make for gifts. Unfortunately, there are not many photographs in this book. Especially in a holiday cookbook, pictures are indispensible. As good as a recipe for a special Christmas cookie may be, I want to SEE what the finished product looks like, especially if I'm thinking about giving them as gifts.

Bon Appetit! 5 out of 5 stars.

If you love the holiday season from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day, then you will love this cookbook. It is bursting with the best-of-the-season recipes and you can choose between casual or elegant fare. If you want to plan a Christmas Cocktail Party or host a Tree-Trimming Buffet for 16...they have it all organized.

There are 170 recipes, 10 holiday parties and 100 color photographs which look just as good as the cover! Now that cover alone should sell this cookbook. A piece of cake dripping in ganache, I mean really! How can we all resist. I think you will enjoy taking this cookbook out in early November and keeping it open until January. There are so many scrumptious ideas and recipes. I mean, who ever thought of stained glass cookie ornaments or a honey-brined turkey. Their New Year's Eve menu includes Phyllo-wrapped Salmon with Leeks and Red Bell Peppers with Parsley Rice Pilaf.

If you are still thinking about New Year's Day Brunch, a Yuletide Dessert Party or just making a Buche de Noel for the first time, this is a good book to find lots of advice. You can learn how to decorate a mantle, created a seasonal centerpiece, pack and mail cookies or even make homemade candies.

This is not only a feast for the eyes, but a real "feast" cookbook. Everything is so elegantly presented. You will be very impressed.

More Than 200 Holiday Recipes from Top Chefs and Writers

At last, from the paper of culinary record, comes a treasure trove of more than 200 recipes that celebrate the delicious festivity of the Passover table. Compiled from Times articles spanning almost fifty years, The New York Times Passover Cookbook represents Jewish cuisine from all over the world.

It contains family recipes that have been passed down for generations as well as innovative kosher cuisine from such celebrated chefs as Wolfgang Puck and Alice Waters. Acclaimed Times writers Molly O'Neill, Ruth Reichl, and Mimi Sheraton have all contributed essays on the different ways that the Passover experience has enriched their lives.

Recipes from Craig Claiborne, Mimi Sheraton, Molly O'Neill, Marian Burros, and Florence Fabricant are also included, allowing the reader to see -- and taste! -- how the experts at The New York Times cook for Passover.

With dozens of fantastic main-course dishes for both meat and dairy meals, you'll have a tough time deciding between the Shad with Pineapple-Rhubarb Salsa and the Braised Moroccan-Style Lamb with Almonds, Prunes and Dried Apricots. Maybe this year your guests will savor a traditional dish like Chicken with Fresh Herbs and 40 Cloves of Garlic -- or perhaps something different, like Southwestern Blackened and Braised Brisket of Beef or Paul Prudhomme's Veal Roast with Mango Sauce. The chapter on Vegetables and Salads contains an ample selection of memorable side dishes: Carrot and Apple Tsimmes, Butternut Squash Ratatouille, the Union Square Cafis Matzoh Meal Polenta, and Beet Crisps are just a few of the flavorful recipes you'll want to enjoy all year round.

I have a slew of holiday cookbooks and this isn't one of my favorites. It's alright and gives some good eye candy to browse at. Also, I did prepare some of the recipes this Christmas and they were tasty but most of the recipes don't say "Christmas" to me. They seem like regular year-round foods.
