A Non Cooking Rabbi Gives This 5 Stars 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I am not a cook. I am a rabbi who cannot cook. In fact, it is dangerous to put me in the kitchen. This book though is not just a great cookbook. It is an incredible historical read. If I could cook I probably would give it ten stars. Remarkable, unique, different, poignant, profound are just some of the words that describe this cookbook. Joan Michel came up with a briliant idea. The contributors from Hadassah Magazine's readership tapped into some resovoir of knowledge and history and produced a profound souffle of goodness, down- home historical family recipes filled with the holiness and history of the ages. This one is more than a keeper, it is a gift giver to all your friends.

Editorial Review:

Should matzo balls be firm or fluffy? Plain or filled? Made with chicken fat, oil, or marrow? These questions and others are addressed in this recipe collection from the celebrated cooks of Hadassah, the Jewish women’s volunteer organization. Over 250 Jewish holiday recipes are offered and include varieties of nostalgic must-haves - from chicken soup to borscht, kreplach to kishka, Grandma's honey cake to Israel's sufganiyot - and twists on the basics - challahs (seeds or honey), latkes (carrot or potato), and harosets (from Surinam to Africa). Reminiscences by top Jewish chefs and 76 enticing color photographs by acclaimed food photographer Louis Wallach accompany the recipes.

great book 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book for anyone looking for entertainment ideas. There are recipes for every occasion. I will be using it in many years to come since it is filled with wondeful ideas from cooking, to flower arranging. The recipes are multicultural.

Beautiful Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.

This Williams-Sonoma cookbook is gorgeous. It has pictures for each of the recipes, and it's just a great entertaining book. It gives helpful tips on flower arranging, napkin folding, and table setting as well. It also has a glossary of special ingredients and techniques that some of the recipes use. It's a wonderful book, even though some of the recipes are a little too gourmet for me.

Didn't like it 1 out of 5 stars.

More for super fancy style entertaining. None of the recipes were appealing to me either.

Christmas with southern living 1997 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Another good example of this series. Lots and lots of great holiday recipes and craft projects. The intructions are good, but the pattern section could be bigger.

Editorial Review:

The decorating, entertaining, cooking, and craft techniques in Christmas with Southern Living reflect the charm of years of Southern ritual, but that doesn't mean they're complicated. The recipes are written especially for those with a sweet tooth; one entire chapter, "Sweets in Seconds," consists of recipes made with packaged ingredients such as brownie and gingerbread mixes. There's a practical but photogenic menu suggestion for Christmas dinner, and the chocolate-orange cream cake on the cover is remarkably simple but rich. There are more than 100 recipes and projects in the book--enough to survive several holiday seasons without giving the same gift or serving the same cookie twice.

It's Wonderful! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Every recipe we have tried so far has been outstanding. Special kudos to the chef for the recipe for Buttery Yorkshire Pudding. Previously we had little success with Yorkshire pudding or popovers in our high Colorado altitude (6800 feet). This recipe was a genuine success, when baked in a heavy bundt pan. The entire book brings back fond memories of our many visits to Williamsburg, when we lived on the East Coast. It's not just for holiday time!!

Bought this for a gift..... 4 out of 5 stars.

A guide for hosting a holiday gathering 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

After agreeing to host our first Thanksgiving dinner, my wife and I began searching for a book that would serve as a guide for hosting a large holiday meal like this. This book is filled with wonderful, practical recipes as well as expert advice on menu planning, tips and getting organized. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is planning a large gathering as well as those who just want some great holiday recipes.

A BOOK FOR MY TWO FAVORITE HOLIDAYS 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Boy, right when Halloween is over I am in full Thanksgiving mode. I've been doing Thanksgiving dinner for my family for over ten years and each ear I seek out at least one or two new recipes to try out on my guinea pigs....errr...guests. This book is culled from the most wonderful recipe site on the internet, allrecipes.com. Long has this been a favored site of mine and millions of other cooks as well. The editors have pulled together 200 of the finest holiday recipes for inclusion in the book.

Among the most valuable sections is the one on preparing for the big feast. it covers what can be done a month before such as getting the invitations out, ordering the turkey or ham, etc. Then we move to two weeks before and prepare by getting making sure you have all the necessary utensils, roasters, and pots, and figuring out where to sit people and your needed space. All this leads up to the big day as you cook the bird and prepare everything else.

From there we move to the recipes and everything from a traditional roasted turkey, to prime rib, deep fried turkey, Alaskan baked Salmon, and honey glazed turkey. I admit I stick to the traditional turkey but I love the vast amount of wonderful side dish recipes. This past Thanksgiving I gave the cheesy green beans a whirl and they were a big hit. Rolls, stuffings, veggies, appetizers..they're all here and well represented. Ahh...and don't forget the deserts! Chocolate Chip Pumpkin bread! Wow...that was some good stuff!

The index is well presented and the recipes canebe found under several listings. For example the Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread will be found under Chocolate, Pumpkin and Breads, making for easy finding. This is one I just love to pull out when November rolls around. A fantastic book!

From Thanksgiving and Christmas to Super Bowl Sunday, the Fourth of July, and Halloween, holidays are a time to enjoy the company of family and friends, not to spend hours working alone in the kitchen. Al Roker is passionate about food and cooking, but he also knows that spending time with his family is more important than preparing a seven-course meal for Easter dinner. In Al Roker's Hassle-Free Holiday Cookbook, Al presents more than 125 simple and casual recipes that will make your holiday gatherings stress free and special.

Here are traditional American favorites for every occasion, from no-cook appetizers and simple side dishes to manageable main courses, and of course, plenty of grilling and outdoor food. And Al has the classics covered -- Thanksgiving turkey with gravy, stuffing, and all the trimmings; splendid Christmas fare, including Crown Pork Roast with Fruit Stuffing and scrumptious and quick gift breads and cookies; satisfying Super Bowl Sunday chili and snacks; a romantic Valentine's Day menu for two; and Halloween treats for adults and kids. Enjoy a Fourth of July picnic of Oven-Fried Chicken with Pecan-Cornmeal Crust accompanied by appetizing salads; honor the patron saint of barbecue on St. Lawrence Day with Texas Brisket and Al's fabulous Grilled Glazed Doughnuts with Vanilla Ice Cream; or try a St. Patrick's Day menu of Irish Stew, Soda Bread, and Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce.

Al provides his own holiday memories and tells how his family holiday celebrations have evolved over time. There are also a wealth of tips and hints on topics such as how to stock a holiday pantry, carve a turkey, handle leftovers creatively, and cook with kids. Think of Al Roker's Hassle-Free Holiday Cookbook as the one thing you'll need to make each holiday flavorful, easy, and fun -- even for the cook!

A Sure Thing! 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I have tried many recipes in this cookbook and they were all a success! Definitely a must-have for your holiday baking. I must admit that I don't only use the book for the holidays. The chocolate almond cheesecake, lemon blueberry bundt cake and blueberry pecan coffee cake make great desserts for any occasion. The recipes are easy to read and most are fairly simple. Never disappointing!

If you're looking for a good buche recipe, look no further! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is a terrific cookbook! The recipes are easy to follow and the results are fabulous. The buche de noel recipe especially is the easiest, tastiest and the most impressive-looking one that I've found anywhere and has become a popular annual Christmas tradition with my family and friends; I end up baking around a half dozen of them every year for parties and get-togethers. This book is worth its weight in gold if you do alot of baking for the holidays (or any other day, for that matter)!

Editorial Review:

Ring in the holidays with this international collection of cakes, pastries, breads, coffee cakes, cookies, pies, and tarts for all festive occasions. From Gingerbread Men to Steamed Plum Pudding, the recipes are fun and easy to follow, and all the basics are covered. Color photos throughout.

Spend your hard-earned bucks on a different pumpkin book. 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Once you've seen the cover of this book, you've seen it all. All of the pumpkins throughout this book are simply variations of the same theme. If you're after recipes, you'll probably like the book okay, but if you're after carving inspiration, look elsewhere.

great idea but no "how to" insructions. 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The book shows a very creative ideas for carving pumpkins for Halloween. However, the book lacks any directions for carving, how to get the seeds out when neccesary, and what materials to use for the eyes. For example, if you use candy for eyes, it melts. If you experiment long enough though, you can creat some wonderful faces.

Great Faces 5 out of 5 stars.

Who would have thought that you could get so many different faces from a pumpkin. The faces are true art and are quite easily done yourself if you wish to create your own.

I bought this book last year, created my own pumpkins that look just like these quite quickly. This year, everyone's calling us asking how we created those pumpkins and where they can get the book.
