"Eat Smart, Be Fit, Live Well." 5 out of 5 stars.
33 of 34 people found this review helpful.

Lushly photographed and filled with stunning winter holiday recipes from breakfast and cocktail parties to the Big Events themselves, this cookbook features lighter versions of many old favorites and some great ideas for reducing the fat in your own recipes. Ingredient substitutions, decorating tips, make ahead meals, and even wine and food pairings are included, as the editors make the holidays a joyful time, foodwise, even for those on special diets. Clearly printed nutritional information appears with each recipe so that those on special diets, such as cardiac patients, can choose among the many selections.

Many appetizer recipes feature veggie-based dips and salsas--Tomato Crostini, Tex-Mex Black Bean Dip, and Warm Mushroom Spread all feature less than 1 g. of saturated fat per serving. "Creamy" dips use lower fat cream cheese to keep these appetizers at about 1 g. of fat per serving. One appetizer made with phyllo dough, usually a no-no for those on diets, uses butter-flavored cooking spray between the layers, instead of butter, to save fat and calories. Vietnamese spring rolls and Chicken/Lemon Pot-Stickers, use rice paper and won ton wrappers, lighter than pastry.

"Light" does not mean "dull" here. Pistachio-Crusted Rack of Lamb, Individual Beef Wellingtons (using phyllo sprayed with cooking spray, instead of puff pastry), or Ultimate Roasted Turkey, with gravy, are all on the menu. A wide assortment of side dishes--soufflés, Caramelized Onions, Potato-Gorgonzola Gratin, Pumpkin-Sage Polenta, and even Leek, Potato, and Caraway Latkes with Spiced Sour Cream--perk up the plate and the palate. The Salad section is outstanding, with unusual combinations of ingredients--Pear, Walnut, and Blue Cheese Salad with Cranberry Vinaigrette is a knockout. Fruit relishes, chutneys, salsas, and even candied cranberries are used as garnishes.

The editors have gone "all out" in the dessert section. The traditional pecan pie is here--regular pecan filling inside a lowfat, cookie-like crust--along with Vanilla or Pumpkin Cheesecake (made with 2 ½ pounds of reduced fat and non-fat cream cheese), gorgeous cakes made with less fat and fewer egg yolks, and pies with lowfat gingersnap, graham cracker, or vanilla wafer crusts. Over forty recipes are included for use as gifts--Apricot Amaretto Bread, Cranberry-Hazelnut Coffee Cake, Orange-Pistachio Baklava.

With over 500 tasty recipes offering a huge selection of elegant and even exotic recipes, this is a cookbook useful to everyone who is health-conscious, including vegetarians. Twenty pages of meatless main dishes and a vegetarian Hanukkah menu are included. A terrific compilation of healthier preparations for traditional holiday foods, this is a cookbook that has it all--and that will be used long past the holidays. n Mary Whipple

    Editorial Review:

Lilly Pulitzer has perfected the art of living well -- through her clothes and also by the way she entertains. Her informal elegance and vibrancy exemplify an attitude of "affluence at ease" -- an attitude she shows us how to incorporate into our daily lives. A Guide to Colorful Holidays follows Lilly as she engages her unique Palm Beach style while celebrating good times -- with yummy-good food shared with family and friends -- on a host of festive holidays or, really, on any day of the year. Divided by seasons, the book spills over with Lilly's favorite memories, distinctive recipes, and creative hints for a year's worth of happy celebration.

SPRING brings a festive Mardi Gras party, an Easter brunch, and a Latin-inspired Mother's Day lunch.

SUMMER calls for a Fourth of July beach picnic, the perfect kid's birthday bash, and the ultimate Labor Day weekend house party.

FALL means Halloween, Thanksgiving, and, as a special treat, a birthday supper for Lilly!

WINTER has festivities on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, plus a romantic Valentine's Day supper dance.

Lilly's is a truly american success story. When she eloped at twenty and moved to Palm Beach, the young Mrs. Pulitzer was noted for the original way she did things -- like having dinner parties in her kitchen, while everyone else entertained formally in their dining rooms.

"What did we care?" Lilly says. "I didn't want to miss out on the fun just because I was cooking." So everyone cha-cha'd into the kitchen and Lilly created a new Palm Beach style that celebrates casual good times, wonderfully prepared food, and laughing with close friends: the recipe for a perfect party.

But as everyone knows, Lilly did more than just have fun. She started a business. Squeezing oranges to make fresh juice in a small shop off tony Worth Avenue caused such a mess that Lilly asked her dressmaker to run up a simple shift in bright colors so that the stains wouldn't show. Her friends liked the shift, asked where they could find it, and voilà! A fashion legend was born.

Now, Lilly wants to share some of her secrets for making holiday entertaining as festive and fun as it can be. Filled with lavish illustrations and lush photographs and featuring an enticing batch of menus, recipes, decorating, and entertaining tips, A Guide to Colorful Holidays is sure to make your festivities sparkle with the color and joie de vivre that Lilly is famous for.

    Editorial Review:

Does The Silver Palate Cookbook ring a bell? Or The New Basics Cookbook? That's Sheila Lukins, with partner Julee Rosso, back in the days of making a major splash in the food world. What had been an upscale take-out shop became a brand, a series of books, and a line of specialty foods. Lukins went on to become food editor of Parade magazine. And she never slowed down on the cookbooks, producing on her own All Around the World Cookbook and USA Cookbook. Now her legion of fans can welcome Celebrate! Like all the others, it's a big book: 350 recipes, 200 color photographs, 480 pages.

"I'm in the mood to celebrate," Lukins crows. "It's the kind of joyous mood that makes me happy to call friends and family and invite them over for good food, good conversation, and good cheer! It's the kind of mood that makes needing a reason to celebrate...." Should you find yourself banging around for a reason to celebrate, relax: Lukins provides 43 of them. She hits all the major holidays--Christmas, Mother's Day, Passover, Superbowl. And then she witches up come celebrations you probably wouldn't think up on your own--Celebrate India, for example, or Celebrate Fresh Blueberry Breakfast. This is a book of menus and clustered recipes, which is handy if you don't want to think through an entire meal. Nothing's too demanding, flavor remains the bellwhether, ingredients will be in easy reach. Piece of cake. Piece of Devil's Food Cake, for that matter. You'll find that along with Deviled Chicken Wings, Red Hot Short Ribs of Beef, Jicama Slaw, and Tangerine Sorbet when it comes time to Celebrate an Old-Fashioned Halloween.

Sheila Lukins has always been one to point the way. Sure, celebrating with food and family and friends is obvious. But Lukins moves it all up to the next level, with bold splashes of color. If you make celebration a part of your everyday life, she's saying, you'll surround yourself with everything in life that's worth celebrating. Good food is certainly part of that living equation. --Schuyler Ingle

I purchased the autumn book and really enjoyed it, so I ordered Christmas Joy. I was tad disappointed to see this was such a small and slender volume. It has the same cute recipes and suggestions but fewer of them. It is also fairly short- only 46 pages. I read it in about 15 minutes.

Overalll, a cute book, but I was expecting more.

Heavenly Roasted Banana-Chocolate Sauce! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I already love Myra Kornfeld's previous cookbooks and was excited to receive this one. I just had to start with the Chocolate Hazelnut Sandwich Cookies and had to laugh when I read at the end of the recipe that they would keep for two weeks at room temperature. Good luck keeping yourself away from those delightful treats for two weeks! But I do appreciate that the instructions include such useful information.

The book is organized by holidays that range from Ramadan to Kwanzaa to the Fourth of July, and includes recipes inspired by many different cultures and ethnicities. Each holiday menu contains dishes that perfectly go together and features a vegetarian main course, as well as either a fish or a chicken dish. Each section begins with a little history about the holiday. Particularly useful are the "Cook's Notes," which tell you how far in advance you can prepare each item. Dishes that freeze well, can be made several weeks in advance, others can be made a few days ahead - great for keeping last minute preparations to a minimum.

But don't wait for the holidays to use this book. I found a halibut recipe on the Easter menu easy enough for a weeknight dinner. Besides the onion, there was only one vegetable to chop. And although I couldn't get halibut and used cod instead, the dish was extraordinarily flavorful and delicious. We ended up serving it with the roasted cauliflower dish from the festive New Year's Eve Menu, which just needed to be reheated, and some crusty bread. It was a veritable feast for a weeknight. The Sesame Noodles with Wilted Napa Cabbage from the Chinese New Year is another easy, yet flavorful dish. And it took less than 25 minutes to prepare. I can't wait to try the Crispy Five-Spice Tofu with Black Bean Sauce as soon as I can get the fermented black beans (resources for ingredients that may not be readily available can be found in the back of the book). The Three-Sisters Polenta Casserole from the Thanksgiving menu, which is inspired by Southwestern and Native American flavors, was another winner for a weeknight at our house. Although it is a little more involved, it can be made ahead and reheated. Scoring the top layer of the polenta before reheating is key - it looks so beautiful when it comes out of the oven! And next time we have meat-eating guests for Thanksgiving, Myra Kornfeld's recipe for the Maple Sugar-Brined Southwestern-Style Turkey will be the one I'll turn to, for sure.

The sweets are not your ordinary desserts. Besides the cookies, I've had a chance to make the Coconut Crème Caramel with Roasted Banana-Chocolate Sauce. This was easy to make, and the sauce turned out so heavenly that I had a hard time restraining myself from just sipping it like hot chocolate while the custard cups were chilling in the refrigerator. The Almond-Orange Fortune Cookies sound like they could be a real project. But I like the idea of being able to write my own messages for my guests.

I couldn't find anything to criticize about this book. It is a unique and invaluable resource if you are interested in delighting your guests with an unforgettable holiday feast. Some of the dishes are more involved than others - after all, the book is about cooking for celebrations. But if you're just looking for new inspiration for every day dishes, this book can be a real treasure as well. You can't go wrong with recipes featuring seasonal ingredients while emphasizing flavor. And Myra Kornfeld succeeds beautifully in creating these recipes. I give this excellent book five stars without reservation.

    Editorial Review:

Over time, twin enterprises Cook's Illustrated magazine and America's Test Kitchen have published many books dedicated to providing exhaustively tested recipes--"best" versions of traditional dishes plus definitive takes on kitchen equipment and ingredients. Some series readers have complained of endlessly recycled or rejiggered recipes; others take each book at face value, finding the formulas and cooking insights good and helpful. America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook, which calls itself a cookbook, cooking school, and kitchen reference in one, offers over 1,200 approachable recipes for a very wide range of dishes--from "weekday" fare like Creamy Rice Casserole, Cheesy Nachos with Spicy Beef, and Skillet Lasagna, to dressier recipes, including Pan-Seared Lamb Chops with Red Wine Rosemary Sauce, Roasted Trout Stuffed with Bacon and Spinach, and Chocolate Marshmallow Mousse. There are "specialty" chapters devoted to sandwiches, drinks, and slow cooker and pressure cooker dishes; a grilling section is a tutorial in itself.

Unorthodox, "better-way" approaches abound. For example, a fried chicken formula instructs the cook to wet the bird's dry coating slightly before it's applied for an extra-crunchy crust. Predictably, side bars feature equipment and ingredient evaluations, on bottled salsa, for example; "good food/bad food" photographs show readers what to aim for when producing fare like holiday cookies; and there are tips, charts, and "Cooking 101" sidebars galore. Step-by-step photos offer more direction still.

Though the majority of recipes are sound and yield tempting results, readers poring through the book will note gaffes and curiosities. The recipe for poached eggs, for example, offers the option of extra cooking for "firm yolks" (hard-boiled poached eggs, anyone?) and hamburgers receive an indentation before cooking to avoid "puffy" domed burgers, a novel problem that could, in any case, be solved by proper shaping. The addition of sugar to some savory dishes--for example, a pan sauce for steak--is misguided. Readers should also know that the book, which comes in loose-leaf form, requires some assembly, and that the pages themselves are quite thin, making them vulnerable to spills and tearing in daily kitchen use.

These things said, the book delivers solid, family-friendly dishes with enough fully orchestrated "how-to" to make even novice cooks feel secure when tackling the basics or more ambitious fare. --Arthur Boehm
