Editorial Review:

Like fireworks on the Fourth of July, relaxing country weekends are an American summertime tradition and no newspaper knows better how to enjoy them in style than The New York Times. For decades, its food pages have featured recipes perfect for leisurely get-away weekends.  Now, many of the finest have been gathered by best-selling cookbook editor Linda Amster in The New York Times Country Weekend Cookbook, a collection that is sure to please every weekend wayfarer. Here are fresh and delectable dishes showcasing the best ingredients that local farm stands and markets have to offer, presented in chapters tailored to every aspect of a long weekend in the country or at the shore:

-The Cocktail Hour
-Quick Suppers After a Long Trip.
-Breakfasts and Brunches to Start the Day
-Lunches at the Beach, Near the Lake or on a Cool and Shady Back Porch
-Dinner: The Main Event
-A Visit to the Farm Stand
-Back to the City

From  celebrated chefs and food writers like Thomas Keller, Eric Ripert, Mark Bittman, Daniel Boulud, Rick Bayless, Jean George Vongerichten and others comes a storehouse of wonderful weekend recipes: ginger chili shrimp; grilled pizza with a choice of mouthwatering toppings; sizzling porterhouse steak with herb salad; buttermilk roast chicken; corn on the cob with flavored butters; a simple and spectacular free-form fruit tart. There is even an essay by Lee Bailey, the man who some believe invented the country weekend, that accompanies the recipe for a favorite dish he served to guests before they left for home on Sunday.  A selection of beverage suggestions -- everything from smoothies to teas to martinis -- rounds out this treasure trove for cooks. As a special bonus, a handy chart at the back of the book offers shortcuts to choosing the dishes that best fit your needs and schedule. The New York Times Country Weekend Cookbook is not only the must-have resource for your own country kitchen, but also the perfect gift for hosts from the Montauck to Malibu, the Berkshires to Big Sur, the Hudson Valley to the Napa Valley and every weekend getaway in between.

Great for Northwest eaters 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Ann Lovejoy, better known as a gardening writer, writes a weekly food column for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and this cookbook draws from her columns. The cookbook is organized by season, and recipes rely on foods that can be grown or bought in the west-of-Cascades Pacific Northwest (both vegetarian and not). She believes in local, organic food where possible; she is careful about sodium and fat (but maybe carbohydrate-heavy for diabetics); most recipes are for 4 servings (2 adults and 2 teenage boys) and many are vegetarian. Flesh recipes usually rely on chicken and seafood rather than beef and pork. She encourages experimentation.

The book provides seasonal recipes and menus and includes growing tips for home gardeners. Recipes we like include Asparagus with Shallot, Thyme, Parsley and Lemon Sauce (spring) and Hot Chicken Noodle Salad (also spring). Page numbers are in the outer page margins, which makes recipes easy to find, but the index gives them under main ingredients rather than recipe titles.

We have tried dozens of Ann's recipes, both from the book and her columns since she wrote the book. (She is one of the few food writers I collect every week.) I like some of her recipes and don't like others, but I recommend the book in spite of personal reservations about specific recipes--there is probably something here you will like or can adapt. Our typical complaint when we don't like a recipe is that it isn't highly seasoned. This book might not help someone in Minnesota, but it does work well anywhere with a Mediterranean-type climate, and ideas can be adapted to local foods.

The book is in print in Sept. 2007. It is worthwhile if you can get fresh ingredients and are willing to experiment with seasoning.

Editorial Review:

Featuring the very best recipes from her weekly Seattle-Post Intelligencer column “Fresh from the Garden,” Ann Lovejoy's newest book consolidates her passion for gardening and cooking into a year-round celebration of fresh, organic ingredients. Organized by season, her simple, uncluttered recipes emphasize bright flavors, aromatic herbs, and an abundance of fresh produce — from familiar favorites like raspberries and zucchini to more exotic items such as garlic tips and dandelion greens. Recipes include Lavender Lemonade, Grilled Prawns with Pumpkin Seed Salsa, Garlic Turkey with Green Peppercorn Gravy, Cress and Fennel Soup, Ginger-Berry Shortcake, and many more. Lovejoy offers a wealth of advice on selecting and growing specific varieties of produce, and her time-tested organic gardening tips are designed to help readers make the most of their growing year.

Seasonal Sensations 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

We bought this book on a trip to Minnesota for a wedding from a store near a local farmers market. Seeking flavorful recipes that used fresh, seasonal ingredients, this book was the perfect find.

This book is a must for those seeking delicious, healthy, fresh recipes. Last night we enjoyed the pomegranate duck breast and it was delicious, as have been all of the other recipes we have enjoyed. The recipes are simple to follow and can turn the beginning cook into a gourmet chef. The key is the use of fresh ingredients.

The books organization is also fantastic being sorted into seasons similar to Michael Chiarello's Tra Vigne Cookbook.

This cookbook also contains many flavorful and unique vegetarian recipes, which in my experience are hard to come by.

A definite for a cook who wants healthy and flavorful recipes.

Editorial Review:

Being ecologically smart has never tasted so good! Cooking seasonally makes sense for the environment and the palate: just picked, locally grown food simply has more flavor than vacuum-packed specimens that travel thousands of miles. Find out how to make the most of fresh produce with this invaluable sourcebook. Each chapter in the four sections—winter, spring, summer, and fall—showcases the season’s best, complete with advice on buying, storing, and preparing the ingredient, and insight into its textures, aromas, tastes, appearance, and history. More than 200 fabulous recipes cover everything from simple sauces (such as rocket pesto) to more complex dishes, including Venison with Celeriac Rosti, Spring Leaf Salad with Chargrilled Asparagus, and Cranberry and Apple Tart Tatin.

Editorial Review:

The What’s-for-Dinner Cookbook is the brainchild of two friends who for years had asked themselves, “What are we going to have for dinner?” as they thought of how they would feed their families every evening. The result is a cookbook and kitchen planner designed to help organize the kitchen, plan meals a week at a time, and organize shopping so that the ingredients needed for every meal are available at the right time.

Based on the four seasons of the year, the book provides five days of planned, well-balanced dinners for every week. The recipes are kitchen-tested family favorites with an emphasis on fresh seasonal foods, thus encouraging homemakers to save significant money by purchasing ingredients when they are most abundant. Most of the recipes can be prepared in 30 minutes or less. They are presented in such a way that leftovers, such as chicken or roast, can be included in meals planned for later in a week.

Quick tips designed to save time and expense are also included. These address such practical matters as when to shred extra cheese or chop an additional onion for use later in the week, which can save time in preparing meals. Extensive weekly and bulk shopping lists are coded by day to allow for family tastes or the requirements of special diets.

The What’s-for-Dinner Cookbook is perfect for busy moms, new parents and working parents, newlyweds and those who have cooked for their families for years. Never worry about dinner again. The planning is already done. COOKING; COOKBOOKS 7” X 9”, 368 PAGES PAPERBACK

Not the best in the series... 3 out of 5 stars.

It seems that as this series went on (there are nine books in all) they just started running out of good ideas. There are a few good recipes and craft ideas left here, though. Worth adding to the collection.

Best cookbook I own 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I am amazed this cookbook isn't more popular. The recepies are knock your socks off delicious, and impressive to foodies and picky eaters alike. Arranged seasonally and sorted into menus, I often find myself making entire chapters, and I have co-opted the Caesar Salad as my own. Comparable to The Zuni Cafe Cookbook by Judi Rodgers and Sunday Suppers at Lucques by Suzanne Goin, this book is better. About me: San Francisco cook; haunts the Farmer's Market, all restaurants in Northern Cal.; entertains friends and pizza-loving husband often.

Editorial Review:

Simplicity, quality, and seasonality are the guiding principles behind the menus and recipes of Lora Zarubin. In order to focus on the freshest ingredients, the book is divided by season, each recipe featuring produce, fish, and meat from that season's bounty. The menus and dishes are drawn from Lora's childhood and her extensive travels in Europe and the U.S.

This book has a lot of good recipes for the holiday season. It's a great addition to the other books in this series. And the crafts are fun to make and easy to do - quite a few things children could be involved in.

I just keep coming back to this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

Another winner from Williams-Sonoma 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I borrowed this book from a friend and kept going back every week to photocopy yet another recipe. I finally decided it would be easier if I just bought my own copy. The Greek rice salad always gets rave reviews at parties and the Sangria recipe is by far the best I have ever found.

Great cookbook! 5 out of 5 stars.

Cabin Cooking is one of my favorites. We especially like the Mountain Breakfast Scones because they are easy, taste great, and require only ingredients you are likely to have on hand. The Turkey with Root Vegetables is also easy, and tastes and looks like you have slaved all day. Likewise, the Spinach and Chorizo Scramble, and the Flank Steak with Tomato Corn Relish. Great color pictures for most recipes. This is the only cookbook we take camping or to the cottage with us!

handy vacation resource 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is one of a series of specialty cookbooks put out by Williams-Sonoma. It's amazingly comprehensive for such a small book. The photos are wonderful, both for illustration and inspiration. It makes some standard recipes easier to handle in the vacation home setting, suggests possible substitutions which makes it good for different seasons and locations, and has notes on planning and packing the vacation pantry.

I'd give it 5 stars if it included more make-ahead and snacky types of things, and more vegetarian options. There are a lot of hearty meat dishes in the dinner category. Some snacks to have in the fridge would be a lifesaver for the hostess or head of family who doesn't want to spend his/her vacation cooking.

Still, one of the best of the genre, especially given the handy size.

Unique & Easy Year-Round Recipes from Cape Cod 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I received "The Cape Cod Christmas Cookbook" by Mark Jasper as a gift this past Christmas, and although Christmas is in the title, there are holiday recipes in this book that are good throughout the year! I have made and enjoyed several recipes, especially baked goods such as: Cranberry-Walnut Morning Cake, Rachel's Banana Bread and Cliff's Blueberry Muffins. But there are also lovely main courses including: Christmas Cranberry Chicken, Clam Pie and the Butternut Squash Casserole, all of which make easy and hearty meals for these bitter months ahead!

I'd highly recommend this enchanting volume to anyone who enjoys cooking or for anyone who'd like some secret recipes from some of our famous inns and restaurants here on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Editorial Review:

The Cape Cod Christmas Cookbook was researched and written for cooks of every caliber, making it easy for visitors to take a tasty piece of the Cape home with them for the holidays and for year-rounders to enjoy an even richer season.

The delectable fare includes holiday drinks, tasty appetizers & soups, unforgettable main entrées and side dishes, sumptuous deserts, as well as a special holiday brunch section. This is authentic Cape Cod from cover to cover, featuring original recipes, many so coveted that they’ve never made it into print before.

And if the recipes were not wonderful enough, they have been lovingly illustrated by the popular Cape artist, Holly Shaker. Mark Jasper is also the author of the best-selling On Cape books, Haunted Cape Cod & the Islands and Haunted Inns of New England.
