Wonderful collection of recipes and other neat stuff 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I own all four books in the series and this one while my least favorite is also helpfull for x-mas preporations. Mostly dealing with christmas it does have a chapter on new year's(american) and valentines day. I thought the X-mas section had more cookie recipes than any thing else, but hey, one can never have too many cookies.

Absolutely Neat! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is just typical of the Gooseberry Patch recipe books. There are great recipes sent in by customers and friends of the two women who started this catalog. The recipes are always good. I have not tried one that has been hard, used wierd ingredients, or didn't turn out excellently. There are nice comments at the start of each recipe suggesting pairings (applesauce is great with these pork chops, for example). And the end of each recipe is usually a little quote, a nice drawing, or some other little bonus. Although there are no pictures of the meals prepared, this series of Celebrate... are great cookbooks. Celebrate Winter is one of my favorites. I have made some great soups that I have not been ashamed to take to potlucks out of this recipe book. Great cookie recipes as well.

This is a cookbook well worth the money.

Enjoy.

all around great book 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

This is a well rounded book for beginners and seasoned vets. It has a good intro for beginners including information that long time raw fooders would benefit from. The recipes are very easy to make and don't have complex ingrediants. Although I have about 10 Raw Food books, I would put this one at the top of my list.

Love It! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book has wonderful recipes! It provides a raw food pyramid as a guide of what to eat on a raw diet. It also gives lists for sprouting and dehydration times. Further, it describes what grains, beans, herbs and more taste like... which is very helpful if you're new to raw. Very worthwhile book... Whether you eat raw full or part-time... you'll love how you feel and look!

Editorial Review:

In The Raw Truth, restaurateur and consultant Jeremy Safron exalts the delicious simplicity of preparing living foods. In a down-to-earth, no-fuss style, he teaches the fundamentals for soaking or sprouting ingredients like almonds and sesame seeds to make appetising, hearty, proud-to-be-raw dishes. But these dishes are not only tasty, they're healthful too. Raw foodists claim that raw foods contain all the enzymes needed to break down on their own, plus more vitamins and nutrients than their cooked counterparts.

Great introduction. 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

In its roughly 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.

This installment, the Book of Fish and Shellfish, starts with an introduction on preparing, cooking, skinning and filleting fish and preparing shellfish, and then presents recipe suggestions for all major types of seafood recipes, from flatfish to mixed catch and smoked fish dishes. Special chapters are dedicated to firm white fish, rich fish, shrimp, crab, lobster, mussels and oyster recipes. Classics such as crab cakes, Cajun style red snapper, chowders, gravlax, Mediterranean fish soup (bouillabaisse), oysters Rockefeller and seafood gumbo appear next to unique dishes such as bass with ginger and lime, flounder with prosciutto, monkfish in coconut cream, salmon with avocado salsa, trout and artichoke frittata, trout with hazelnuts, and tuna and ginger vinaigrette.

From Angels on Horseback (oysters wrapped in bacon) to yogurt-topped halibut, this collection of recipes, while not all-encompassing, is a great introduction to the endless varieties of seafood dishes - and at a relative bargain price, to boot.

"Great gift for teachers" 4 stars
The only reason that I did not give this book a 5 is that the pages are not laminated and the type of binding causes you to have to hold the pages down (I use canned goods to hold my pages down while I bake).
Otherwise, this is a great cook book. The recipes are simple and festive. Most require few ingredients. Many of the recipes are for typical Christmas foods, such as eggnog ice-cream, cranberry cake, and pretzel wreath. Other recipes are included that I never before thought of as being festive, such as monkey bread, cheesecake cookies, cinnamon-sugar butter cookies.
These are recipes that the kids can help with. What better time to get them excited about baking than Christmas time? My children's teachers are getting this book as a gift for the holidays. We recommend it.

Not my fav 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

William-Sonoma cookbooks usually have a lot of great recipes intrigue me, but this winter collection just did not. Too many frou-frou recipes, too much seafood in the beginning, and exotics such as duck, goose etc. I prefer cookbooks with ingredients and common forms of meat such as beef, chicken and turkey. There were some of this nature, but nothing that enticed me enough to want to make it.

Some of the desserts looked good, such as the bread pudding, the wintergreen ice-cream with truffles, and the grand marnier soufflé with ladyfingers.

Overall, I expected more from this book. I'd love it if there were some more mainstream main courses.
