A little dissapointed 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I was on a waiting list for over a month for this book then it was "lost" by my mail carrier so I had been waiting a while and the anticipation was not met by what was inside.

There is a section on homemade gifts but really nothing new. There is also a big chapter on peoples shared Christmas memories, while sweet it was not what I wanted to pay for. There havent been any recipes in here that I have tried yet so I guesse that its not that memorable of a book.

Get Jolly Hollidays instead, that is an awesome book.

Editorial Review:

A cozy Christmas with family & friends! Merry Christmas Cookbook is filled with scrumptious recipes from breakfast through dessert like classic breakfast casserole, cheese & mushroom stuffed chicken, tangy beef brisket, Miss Polly's perfect potatoes, tuxedo brownies in a jar, cranberry-chip cookie mix, cookie dough truffles and ooey-gooey homemade caramels. It even has a chapter full of heartwarming memories and another of nothing but gift mixes, tasty treats to make & give and holly-jolly crafts. It's sure to be a favorite!

Editorial Review:

Just east of the village of Amagansett, toward Montauk, the towns fall away, the trees disappear, the sky opens up, and the lush farmland gives way to sand and reeds and scrub in an area called Napeague. On the ocean side of this lonely stretch of Route 27, nestled in front of dunes, a sign announces “Lunch” at a shingle-style diner. As New York magazine explained, “Anyone who’s ever been to a Hampton has seen the Lobster Roll, better known as Lunch—a weather-beaten roadside clam bar, no-frills seafood restaurant, and geographic point of reference that’s as much a part of the South Fork as the Montauk lighthouse.”

The Lobster Roll is indeed an institution, evocative of carefree, casual summer eating—exactly the type of food in this book:

• Soups and appetizers such as New England Clam Chowder, Lobster Bisque, and Steamers and Broth
• Rolls and sandwiches that include Lobster Rolls and the Perfect Hamburger
• Perfect summer entrées like Lavender-and-Buttermilk Fried Chicken, Barbecued Ribs, and Grilled Leg of Lamb with Garlic and Rosemary
• Refreshing sides such as Creamy Coleslaw, Pickled Squash and Mint Salad, and simple recipes for summertime treasures like corn, tomatoes, and new potatoes
• Desserts like Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie and Raspberry-Peach Cobbler as well as drinks such as Homemade Berry-Citrus Iced Tea and Fresh Strawberry-Mint Lemonade

The Lobster Roll has been dishing up this food for three decades to locals, tourists, and summer residents alike. This book is a celebration of that cuisine, with the restaurant’s preparations adapted for home cooks, plus non-restaurant recipes for quick, simple dishes that take advantage of summer’s fresh bounty. And the beautiful color photographs perfectly capture both the food and the region—this book is what summer looks like, and this food is what summer tastes like.

The best book on really authentic Italian cooking 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

In this world inundated with tomes devoted to Italian cooking, this wonderful book stands out. The author spent years researching, collecting and testing authentic, seasonal farmhouse recipes (from all over the country) made with only the freshest ingredients. (The recipes are full-proof!!) This is one of the few books that allows everyone to make some of the most appetizing Italian dishes--just as the Italians do. Everything is explained in detail--from ingredients to techniques to customs to mail-order sources--in one of the most complete books ever written on the subject. And if this weren't enough, the flavor of the food is beautifully captured in some of the most exquisite photographs ever taken of Italy and its food. This book is a MUST for anyone who likes to cook and/or eat the most mouth-watering Italian cuisine!!

Editorial Review:

Filled with more than 125 recipes, 200 glorious, full-page photographs, and wonderful narrative vignettes, this rich, seasonal celebration of the Italian countryside is as much a travelogue as it is a cookbook. The authors collect the culinary wisdom of cooks from all parts of Italy, offering in the process a delightful glimpse of the country's culture and ambience.

You can actually grill a delicious pizza while friends hang out around the barbecue drinking red wine! The soups are delicious as well as the salads, meat entrees and their famous seasoning recipes! A must have for family meals as well as friendly get togethers!

As good as the restaurant! 5 out of 5 stars.

I've dined at the restaurant many times, and it is consistently good. The cookbook is just as good as the restaurant - especially the Penne Gratin (very rich, very decadent and VERY delicious!)

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cooking.

Editorial Review:

This collection of 120 delectable recipes from Fresco by Scotto, a popular Tuscan-style restaurant in New York, features healthy, uncomplicated dishes using the freshest produce of each season. Forty full-color photos depict the dishes and the ingredients used to make them.

Editorial Review:

Have you ever wondered why restaurants have nightly specials? There are many reasons, actually, but they all have one thing in common: spontaneity. Nightly specials are a way to cook with seasonal fruits and vegetables, the catch of the day, unexpected leftovers, and spur-of-the-moment market finds. They are also a way for chefs to experiment with exciting new ingredients, develop their own signature dishes, and road-test new ideas that may eventually become regular menu features.

If these reasons sound familiar, that's because they all apply to home cooks as well.

Because there's no set menu in a home kitchen, every dinner is a nightly special. But all too often, home cooks find themselves in a rut, recycling the same meals week after week. Nightly Specials shows home cooks how restaurant and home cooking can meet. Acclaimed New York chef and host of the Travel Channel's Epicurious, Michael Lomonaco, along with award-winning food writer Andrew Friedman, offer up 125 recipes that use fresh and spontaneous ingredients to create innovative starters, salads, entrees, sides, and desserts. All the recipes are simple, loosely improvised dishes that will inspire home cooks to be flexible and remain open to each day's culinary possibilities. Best of all they can be selected at the last minute and cooked successfully in relatively little time.

No matter what the season or occasion, you'll find the perfect recipe in Nightly Specials. Toss together salads like Cool Roasted Beets with Mint or Mango and Red Onion Salad with Basil Vinaigrette. Warm up with a bowl of Curried Pea Soup with Frizzled Ginger or Moroccan Lamb Stew. Main courses include everything from quick-comforting favorites such as Supermarket Mushroom Risotto to show-stoppers such as Hacked Chile Lobster and Boneless Roast Leg of Lamb with Feta Cheese, Olives, and Eggplant. Desserts range from holiday classics such as Pear-Cranberry Upside-Down Cake to peak-of-the-summer favorites such as Plum and Peach Cobbler and indulgences such as Baked Alaska with Coconut Sorbet and Chocolate Ice Cream and Chocolate Truffles.

Editorial Review:

Whether your summer house is a beachside bungalow, a lakeside cottage, or a year-round retreat, cooking for family and friends while on vacation can be a delight—if you know how to keep it simple. The Summer House Cookbook has all of the tips, tricks, and recipes guaranteed to make summertime cooking a breeze.

Rather than stocking a vacation home with a full array of spices, whip up a couple “make-to-take” infused oils, marinades, and spice blends to bring along—they’ll give instant, effortless flavor to meats and fish. Save time in the kitchen by cleverly dressing up leftovers—turn extra roast chicken into Tarragon Tree Chicken Salad, and grilled flank steak into a great sandwich with some Balsamic-Marinated Red Onions. From crowd-pleasing recipes such as Picnic Basket Fried Chicken, Memorial Day Coleslaw, and Bar Harbor Lobster Cakes to sophisticated offerings like Charred Pesto Shrimp and Grilled Lamb Chops with Olive Butter, these dishes require nothing more than the basic equipment available in even a bare-bones kitchen.

The Summer House Cookbook is filled with great ways to enjoy the pleasures of the season. Share a big pitcher of margaritas and a bowl of Best-Ever Guacamole with friends, or celebrate summer produce with Fourth of July Strawberry Shortcakes and Perfect Peach Pie.

Filled with evocative photographs and the stove-side advice of two friends who love to cook together, The Summer House Cookbook is all you need to create delicious food in any kitchen.

You may already own this book... 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

If you purchased Halloween: 101 Frightfully Fun Ideas (BH&G), you have already seen most of the ideas in this new book. The clever crafts that made the first book so appealing to me are re-worked in this latest edition. What a disappointment! The photography is still stunning and the pictures do inspire, but the crafts that are new in this edition have been done better in other books. If you don't own 101 FFI, than this book will really be a treat. The costumes are a small step above the other book, but still nothing to get excited about. I hope that plans for a third book in the series will show a break from what's been done before.

Editorial Review:

Grab a cauldron full of FUN! Create an eerie atmosphere for an unforgettable Halloween party. Concoct devilishly delectable treats your ghouls and goblins will love. Transform your little cutie into a spooky spider. Your inspiration is right here! With the help of step-by-step instructions, Better Homes and Gardens kitchen-tested recipes, and how-to photos and patterns, you'll be able to master everything from festive decorations and costumes to yummy recipes fit for any monster. Go ahead -- get in the spirit!

Great easy one page recipes that can be made in advance. 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful cookbook with easy one page recipes that can be made in advance. The foods are served at room temperature so there is no cooking at the last minute. This cookbook is not only handy for picnics but also for luncheons or any time you want to prepare delicious and easy recipes ahead of time. And as an added bonus a CD or cassette is included which plays classic ragtime music.

Editorial Review:

Picnickers should enjoy these easy-to-prepare recipes from the grand summer music festivals of the USA and Canada. They are created by the inns, restaurants, and caterers who make portable meals for festival crowds. The musical recording of 12 ragtime classics is performed by the Pickles and Peaches Ragtime Orchestra. The cookbook contains contributions from the Aspen Music Festival; Hollywood Bowl; Interlochen; Ravinia; Tanglewood; and Wolf Trap festivals. The Pickles and Peaches Ragtime Orchestra offer selections from "Champagne Rag"; "Pork and Beans"; "Pineapple Rag"; "Pickles and Peppers"; "Country Club Rag"; and "Heliotrope Bouquet".

Light reading; light cooking 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you are looking for light, fast to prepare, and delicious Summer recipes this is a great choice. As there are innumerable cookbooks available, I am highly selective in my cookbook library. Like every other foodie, I have a few cook-bibles (Marc Bittman, Cooks Illustrated, Fannie Farmer), but I do add the occasional unusual reference. Delia Smith's book is one.

The recipes in this book are clearly described, easy to follow, and range from appetizers to meals.

Most important, however, is that recipes in this book are not found elsewhere.

Editorial Review:

In Delia’s Summer Collection, she presents 140 international dishes, including Roasted Tomato Soup with a Purée of Basil, Thai Fish Cakes with Cucumber Dipping Sauce, Rhubarb Compote, Lemon Meringue Ice Cream, and Pineapple Cooler. She discusses grilling and roasting vegetables, stunning home-made ice creams, barbecues for meat-eaters and vegetarians alike, a feast of fresh fruits, as well as a section on preserves to recapture some of the flavors of summer in the dark days of winter.
