I think it's great 4 out of 5 stars.

I received the book in the mail the other day. The book was bigger than I expected but that's cool. I found myself reading most of the introduction which is rare. The only thing I regret about this book is that there were not enough pictures. I found the recipes to be simple and interesting enough to want to try them. I have'n read anything else by this author but I can say I like this one and am excited about trying the recipes.

Very beautiful book 4 out of 5 stars.

I received this book as a gift for my birthday and it has turned out to be a wonderful surprise. I love how the book is formatted by seasons. In general the book is beautiful. Almost too beautiful... I am afraid to have it in my kitchen while I cook! That aside, I just enjoy reading it. I agree with another review in that I wish it had more pictures.

Editorial Review:

Great cooking—using fresh, seasonal, local ingredients—is at the heart of the experience offered by Rancho La Puerta, Baja California’s premier resort spa. Cooking with the Seasons transports that regenerative experience to your own home kitchen, changing the way you think about food and cooking—and, just possibly, changing your life.

This is no “diet cookbook,” however. For Rancho’s founder, Deborah Szekely, and co-author Deborah Schneider, food is the very force of life, and eating simply and healthfully is one of life’s most profound pleasures.

The book’s 120 recipes are organized as a series of complete—and luscious—seasonal menus. As spring rouses the earth, you’ll awaken your taste buds with Sorrel and Spinach Salad with Roasted Cumin-Orange Vinaigrette. When summer arrives, your senses will dance with Poached Wild Salmon with Avocado-Tarragon Aioli. You’ll revel in fall’s brilliant colors with Carrot and Ginger Soup with Pears. And, in winter, you’ll welcome the new year with Mayan Chocolate Sorbet. Throughout, sidebar tips give valuable advice on everything from choosing the most healthful grains and flours, to preserving summer’s goodness with dried herbs and homemade jams.

Another Solid Book from Lou Seibert Pappas 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have enjoyed other cookbooks by Lou Seibert Pappas (Creme Brulee; Ice Cream & Sorbet; Coffee Cakes) so I ordered this without first checking it out in a book store. It did not diappoint.

The first several chapters provide very helpful background about choosing, storing and cooking squash as well as listing the types of squash (both winter and summer squash varieties).

Many of the recipes are novel and are delicious-sounding pairing of ingredients that I haven't seen in other cookbooks (and I have a lot). More than half of the recipes are accompanied by a beautiful full-page color photo. As a vegetarian, I found many recipes I want to try but the Entrees chapter also includes a nice selection of recipes for meat eaters (from chicken to lamb, pork to fish).

Chapters include Breads and Breakfast (rosemary-polenta pumpkin muffins, zucchini-golden raisin quick bread, pumpkin-orange waffles with hazelnut-maple sryup butter); Soups, Salads and Sides (butternut squash-pear bisque, roasted butternut squash polenta with fried sage, goat cheese-stuffed squash blossom and heirloom tomato salad); Entrees (five-spice pork tenderloin with pumpkin half-moons and red grapes, grilled chicken breasts stuffed with zucchini and goat cheese, chayote stuffed with lamb and pine nuts); and Desserts (cranberry-pecan pumpkin drop cookies, candied ginger-pumpkin creme brulee, pumpkin cheesecake with gingersnap crust, caramel-glazed pumpkin date bars).

As you might expect, pumpkins are the most popular squash used throughout the book and appear in nearly half of the recipes. Other squashes featured include butternut, spaghetti, zucchini, chayote, kabocha, and acorn. Several recipes let you choose the winter or summer squash to use but, don't worry, there is a list from which to choose.

This would be a wonderful hostess gift in the fall if you are a guest for dinner or a weekend.

Editorial Review:

Buttercup or crookneck pattypan or sugar pumpkin squashes and pumpkins are delicious additions to muffins breads soups salads pastas entrées and sweets. Just as good in the morning as at night the recipes in this beautiful cookbook include such gems as Cranberry-Walnut Pumpkin Coffee Cake Grilled Chicken Breasts Stuffed with Zucchini and Goat Cheese and Five-Spice Pumpkin-Ginger Cake. With 40 wonderful recipes a glossary of the types of squash basic cooking instructions and useful tips on how to buy and store them these versatile delicious gourds make for year-round goodness.

If there were pictures in this book, it would be the best book I own on the subject. I love the chapter written about the background on the holiday and there were some really good decorating ideas. I wish the author would do a new edition on this book with color photographs of the projects.

Editorial Review:

Full Moon Feast invites us to a table brimming with locally grown foods, radical wisdom, and communal nourishment.
In Full Moon Feast, accomplished chef and passionate food activist Jessica Prentice champions locally grown, humanely raised, nutrient-rich foods and traditional cooking methods. The book follows the thirteen lunar cycles of an agrarian year, from the midwinter Hunger Moon and the springtime sweetness of the Sap Moon to the bounty of the Moon When Salmon Return to Earth in autumn. Each chapter includes recipes that display the richly satisfying flavors of foods tied to the ancient rhythm of the seasons.
Prentice decries our modern food culture: megafarms and factories, the chemically processed ghosts of real foods in our diets, and the suffering—physical, emotional, cultural, communal, and spiritual—born of a disconnect from our food sources. She laments the system that is poisoning our bodies and our communities.
But Full Moon Feast is a celebration, not a dirge. Prentice has emerged from her own early struggles with food to offer health, nourishment, and fulfillment to her readers. She recounts her relationships with local farmers alongside ancient harvest legends and methods of food preparation from indigenous cultures around the world.
Combining the radical nutrition of Sally Fallon’s Nourishing Traditions, keen agri-political acumen, and a spiritual sensibility that draws from indigenous as well as Western traditions, Full Moon Feast is a call to reconnect to our food, our land, and each other.

Editorial Review:

Instead of bringing food to guests in a traditional restaurant setting, Jim Denevan brings diners to their food, creating what Alice Waters has called “the restaurant I always imagined.” His innovative organization, Outstanding in the Field, sets up dinner tables in fields, ranches, dairies, vineyards, and community gardens across the country for alfresco meals that truly reconnect us with the land and people that produce our food.

In Outstanding in the Field, Denevan presents a cookbook full of seasonally inspired dishes from his farm-fresh dinners, sharing more than one hundred recipes with home cooks and food lovers everywhere. Celebrating local ingredients at their height of freshness, favorites include Haricot Vert and Early Girl Tomato Salad with Summer Savory; Burrata Cheese with Nectarines, Mâche, and Hazelnuts; Sea Scallops with Sugar Snap Peas and Chervil; Pure Maple Syrup–Braised Short Ribs; Green Tomato Marmalade; and Upside-Down Fresh Fig Cake. All of the recipes present opportunities to use the most flavorful produce, meats, and cheeses in the area where you live—and suggestions for substitutions when necessary.

America’s appetite for organic and local food has never been stronger and there is no better guide to this growing movement than Jim Denevan. With inspiring recipes, beautiful photographs throughout of farms and food across the country, and information on finding local ingredients and helping Community Supported Agriculture and community gardens, Outstanding in the Field is a cookbook that celebrates the pleasures of raising, preparing, and enjoying good food.

Nigella Rocks 5 out of 5 stars.

My how Nigella has changed the way I Cook, Eat, think and feel about food. I first saw Nigella cooking on her TV show Nigella Bites and just loved the way she spoke about food with her passion coming through the TV screen. I purchased her books and now I'm such the Male Domestic God that I think I have missed my calling and should have been a Chef, but I do know that it's all thanks to Nigella.

Forever Summer 4 out of 5 stars.

SIMPLE, INEXPENSIVE, AND GREAT LOOKING PROJECTS 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

When I was a kid...and I'm NOT saying when that was...decorating for Halloween consisted of mainly taping those old cardboard decorations of skeletons, witches, or bats, etc, on your windows, carving a jack-o-lantern, and maybe stuffing a dummy. Today, decorating for Halloween is second only to Christmas and is growing every year. No longer just sprouting up a week before the holiday, today people seem to begin decorating for Halloween as soon as October rolls around. And with the elaborate displays many people now have, it probably takes that long to finish. But as Halloween stores pop up each September selling expensive, Hollywood quality props and decorations, people have lost sight of the fact that you needn't break the bank to have a great Halloween display at your house. "Halloween Recipes & Crafts" presents 160 pages of fantastic ideas for decorating both inside and outside, along with great recipes and other tips for a memorable Halloween. The book opens with a short but interesting history of Halloween and then provides tips on party planning and safety. From there we get into the meat of the book and the fabulous projects you can make at home for little cost.

Outdoor Décor is the first section and provides a number of projects that were new to me. One of the most interesting was the freshly dug graves project where you turn everyday plastic garbage bags and a little bit of dirt or soil, to create the look of a freshly dug grave on for your front lawn. Accent it with a Styrofoam tombstone (which you can also make very inexpensively) some leaves, maybe a fake hand rising out of the dirt, for a truly terrifying display.

Another outdoor project utilizes old tin cans, such as soup or even coffee cans. Painted pumpkin orange, simply punch a series of holes in the can with an awl or screwdriver to make a face. Place a candle inside the can and hang outside for a brilliant Halloween lantern. There's also dangling skeletons that can be made with old gallon milk jugs and a scary Halloween ghost flag that can be made for a few dollars.

Moving inside, there are more great projects. Utilize those, unused Halloween masks by simply stuffing them and hanging them inside...or outside...as recently severed heads. One of my favorite projects is the shrunken heads made out of apples. Simply peel an apple and apply a solution of lemon juice and salt to prevent browning. Carve out the apple in the shape of a face and let dry for a couple of weeks. You can even use marker or paint to further accent these ghastly little decorations. The highlight for me was a miniature graveyard scene made with a simple sheet of Styrofoam, some Spanish moss, twigs, little stones, and smaller pieces of Styrofoam to make tiny tombstones.

The recipes section has all sorts of Halloween themed ideas like deviled egg eye balls or lady fingers made from a half of a hot dog with a red pepper finger nail applied with a bit of cream cheese. Add raisins to ice cubes for drinks or punch to give the appearance of bugs. A great idea for adults is to take the traditional bread bowl spinach dip and cut the bread bowl into a jack-o-lantern face. It would make a great centerpiece for an office party.

If you're hosting a party for your children and their friends there's a great chapter featuring a wide display of games like "Pin the Mouth on the Pumpkin", "Encase the Mummy", "Apple Grab" and more that will keep the kids busy and having fun. The book closes with some tips on costume selection and makeup.

The projects in this book are great looking yet very simple and inexpensive to make. The projects all have a supply list and are described in step-by-step fashion. Chances are you'll find that you have a lot of the items you need already in your home. The book is printed on glossy paper and is lavishly illustrated with dozens of photographs throughout. A real ghoul's treat of fun and great looking projects.
