Excellent Guide for all Things Halloween 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I picked this up with Matthew Mead's, "Halloween Tricks & Treats" and I'm glad I did!

Both books are completely unique so together you have a multitude of ideas and projects for an Awesome Halloween. While the focus of Mead's book centers largely on recipes, "A Ghostly Good Time" leans more towards costumes and decorating the home and yard.

The idea's are colorful and light on the creepy factor, this is, after all a book geared towards families and children. Both books are written and/or compiled by special interest magazines so the collection is fresh while throwing an easy nod to tradition.

Another must for all of you Halloween addicts out there, and we know who we are!

First book in the series 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Let me say that this is a nice book. But, it doesn't have all the color photos, details and recipes that the later editions do so if you have those, don't expect the same with this one. I buy these for friends annually because they are that great and this one is pretty good. I think the third and fourth are the best so far, and this one is just average. The recipes are incredible, however, so it is worth the price of admission just for those. I love these books and it's hard to be disappointed with them once you start using them.

Editorial Review:

We simmered enough chicken soup, beef stew, and corn chowder to feed a small city. Here are more than 200 exhaustively tested recipes, kitchen equipment tests, and blind food tastings that share our discoveries on the undisputed best ways to make America's favorite soups and stews. The Best Recipe: Soups & Stews is the result of testing more than 6,000 recipe variations for America's favorite soups and stews, from chicken noodle soup, clam chowder, and French onion soup to bouillabaisse, chicken gumbo, and chili. We cover the basics, from which equipment works best to secrets for making quick, rich-tasting chicken stock. We share the secrets for turning out a great bowl of soup or stew, including where to simmer stews (use the oven, not the stovetop), how to puree vegetable soups (the blender, not the food processor, worked best), and what sets a decent beef stock apart from a great beef stock (it's the meat, not the bones). For both beginners and advanced cooks, The Best Recipe: Soups & Stews is sure to become an indispensable kitchen companion.

Not as creative as the Christmas series 3 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I was very excited about this book when I first heard about it. I love the Christmas series and have several other cookbooks from them and love them dearly! This book just didnt live up to the other books I have though.
Most of the recipes in this book seem to be repetitions of recipes from their other books. There are a few things that are different and new but if you have any of their other books you probably have a recipe for 90% of the items offered.
Also the crafting ideas just arent as inspiring as their Christmas crafts. I have enjoyed decorating my home for the holidays with the help of Gooseberry but this just didnt have the same origionality as the other books.
Maybe they just spread themselves too thin trying to cover one whole year in one book. But I think if you have any of their other books than you can pass on this one.

Editorial Review:

No one epitomizes the pursuit of healthy pleasures more than Martha Stewart. And nowhere is this clearer than at home in her kitchen.  Now, the millions of fans who seek her guidance can prepare the food that gives Martha her remarkable energy and vitality. Martha Stewart's Healthy Quick Cook presents an all-new collection of 52 quick, easy menus--with more than 175 sensibly lightened recipes--for the kind of food we want to eat today.

Over the years, almost effortlessly, Martha has changed the way she cooks and eats. With unparalleled style and good sense, she has trimmed the fat and intensified the flavor of her favorite recipes to create meals that are unfailingly delicious, absolutely healthy, and strictly no-nonsense. A wonderfully filling frittata, flavored with sage, "enlightened" with egg whites, and paired with herb-infused garlicky stove-top potatoes, is a terrific low-fat, nutrient-rich meal to begin--or end--the day. Simple, yet no less special, sandwiches and incredible salads of brilliantly matched ingredients--seared tuna burgers splashed with soy sauce and swabbed with fiery wasabi mayonnaise, sugar snap peas mixed with whole mint leaves, and delicate shavings of baby golden beets tossed with fresh basil--reflect Martha's genius for casual yet sophisticated cooking.

Instead of concentrating on calorie counts, fat grams, and sodium content, Martha teaches how to eat well intuitively: how to make a variety of grains, fruits, and vegetables a delicious part of everyday eating; how to create menus that are supremely satisfying and nutritionally sound; even how to indulge a sweet tooth properly by enjoying small portions of such classic desserts as whisper-thin lemon tarts, ginger cookies, and fruit crisps. And her recipes come from all over the world, making healthy meals as exciting as they are fulfilling.

In her chapters of spring, summer, fall, and winter menus, Martha explains how to use simple low-fat cooking techniques to transform the freshest ingredients of each season into fabulous dishes. You'll find quick grills and sautés of such light delicacies as butterfish, softshell crabs, woodsy portobello mushrooms, and mangoes. There are high-heat roasts of winter root vegetables, succulent poussin, pomegranate-lacquered rack of venison, red snapper--even juicy plums. She uses flavor-raising steam for Brussels sprouts, baby spinach, and halibut packaged in grape leaves--and there's an easy stove-top smoked salmon, too.

This is inspiring food, presented as only Martha Stewart can. This book will change the way you think about healthy cooking--and what you create in your kitchen every day.

Martha Stewart presents a collection of brand-new recipes for the healthful foods that energize her every day. These 52 quick, easy menus represent the effortless style and practicality we have come to expect from Martha. The more than 175 sensibly lightened recipes--all exquisitely prepared and photographed--will change the way you think about healthy cooking and what you create in your kitchen every day.

I love this book. Great recipes. Remember you can always substitute if a recipe contains something you just hate, but I suggest you try it the way it was written and see before making changes. You might just find that you like it.

First Rate!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

...Karri Ann Allrich has updated this book, and has changed the name to "Cooking By The Seasons". I decided, after owning this original cookbook for 2 years, and after seeing the revised version, that I would write a revised update of my book review, to remind people of what a great cookbook that exists out there!

This cookbook is divided into seasons. When I first became interested in eating with the seasons, I found this book to be an excellent advantage to actually offer menus for each season. Within each season, is a section for appetizers, main dishes, beverages and desserts. There are also sample menus for gatherings.

Despite the fact, I am not a vegetarian, I have enjoyed the recipes from this book as part of a more healthy approach to eating. Also, some of the main dishes can be utilized as a side dish for a meat-eater, or you can add meat to most of those dishes. All the dishes are easy to prepare, and the ingredients are easily found in any grocery store.

This cookbook does contain a goddess twist. There are Celtic festivals to celebrate and ways to honor a certain goddess with that dish. Even if you are not a Pagan, this book is exciting because the Pagans are known for living at one with the Earth. So, who better to find out what's in seasons and what meals to eat during that season, than a Pagan!

Examples of some of the delicious dishes you too can enjoy from this book are: Curried Stuffed Eggs, Golden Potato Soup, Roasted Vegetable Lasagna, Summer Garden Couscous, Southwestern Polenta and Garden Gazpacho.

This cookbook was so good, that I also recommend another one of her cookbooks "Cooking by Moonlight, 13 Menus for 13 Moons".

Check out this book today!

Editorial Review:

Whether you are a hardcore vegan or simply want to try tasty flavour combinations, Cooking by the Seasons will inspire you to create innovative meals. With easy-to-find ingredients, most recipes take less than forty-five minutes to prepare. This cookbook celebrates the cycle of the four seasons, featuring menu plans for the eight festivals.
