Editorial Review:

"Lee Svitak Dean, whose 'Taste' section--which includes an annual roundup of Minnesota's 50 best food finds from artisanal butter to hot dishes--makes out-of-towners, like us, hungry too." --Saveur, February 2008 Award-winning writer and national food authority Lee Svitak Dean provides 32 seasonal menus and over 150 recipes for just about any party or occasion in this, her first book. Guided by the ingredients and distinct seasons of the Midwest, these menus take the guesswork and anxiety out of party hosting with game plans for all cooks: What can be done ahead? How do you get the food ready at the same time? All of the menus include time-saving tips, shortcuts, and substitutions so that even the busiest among us can throw a wonderful party. The menu styles range from elegant to casual chic. One winter menu, Post-Holiday Winter Celebration, includes Cream of Carrot Soup, Rock Cornish Game Hens with Apple Cider Sauce, and Poached Pears with Caramel and Pistachios. A simpler summer menu, Fourth of July Picnic, includes Orange Mint Iced Tea, Asian Noodles with Pea Pods and Peanut Dressing, Grilled Vegetables with Onion Chutney, and Almond Shortbread. Lee Svitak Dean is the longtime food editor at the Star Tribune in Minneapolis. She has been named one of the "unsung saviors of America's local food scenes" by Saveur magazine.

Very easy to make recipes! 5 out of 5 stars.

Gather around the table! It's that time of year that is simply wonderful -- getting together with your friends and family for fun, togetherness and of course, food. Before you know it, someone is asking for the recipe for them to try it at home. Do you feel like you always have the same thing at all your get-togethers? There is good reason for that, the familiar recipes are family favorites.

Darcie Anzalone has compiled many of her family favorites into a little recipe book which will give you more ideas for tasty beverages, breads, candies, cookies, main dishes, soups, salads and snacks plus much more. Many of these recipes are very easy to make and provide delicious results. My own favorites are Pumpkin Cake and Baked French Toast.

With the help of "Just Family Favorites," I can't wait to have guests over the holidays. Even if some of the recipes are found in a Christmas recipe book, there should be no reason why some of them can't be family favorites throughout the year. With Darcie's help, I'm sure my guests will be asking me for recipes. Should I give out my secrets or make them think I've suddenly become a kitchen magician?

Editorial Review:

This collection of holiday recipes features dozens of traditional family favorites-from the best turkey and stuffing, to pies, cookies, cakes, and more.

Great Book! Great Recipes! 5 out of 5 stars.

Hi, I'm a big fan of Gooseberry Patch, and I recently had the opportunity to review Christmas Book 3. I highly recommend it for those looking for fun craft ideas, and great recipes. In particular the Honey-Roasted Pork Loin and Harvest stuffing recipes were divine and went over well with my family. Unlike other Gooseberry Patch books, this series is larger and contains pictures. Sure to have something for everyone!

Inspired 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is so full of ideas and suggestions, and it's fun to read. I feel I can adapt some of the gift jar ideas for other holiday giving as well. It's a great book.

Awesome recipes! 5 out of 5 stars.

If you love good food, you have to buy this book! The desserts section in particular are just nothing short of out of this world. My husband started calling me a gourmet cook after I started using these recipes from this book throughout the year. The pork loin roast and stuffing is awesome, but so are those chocolate and peanut butter cookies (they call for a pound of butter, if that gives you some idea of how delectable they are!). The recipes in here are just incredible and you need to get them to use every day. You certainly won't be disappointed and even the decorating tips are great. Buy IT!

Editorial Review:

This third edition in the popular series features 160 pages of down-home Christmas decorations and delicacies from Gooseberry Patch. There are over 65 projects and 100 recipes, accompanied by beautiful photography of finished projects.

Focus On Autumn 3 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

This cookbook tackles perhaps the most difficult challenge vegetarians face. While there is a wide range of produce that comes into its own in the Autumn, and the Thanksgiving table usually holds an array of plant-based foodstuffs, there is nevertheless no other gathering in U.S. culture that brings expectations of a certain dish. And flesh-based it is. Without the turkey, how do vegetarians host Thanksgiving? Vegetarian Times addresses the problem in this cookbook. There is an attempt to provide several impressive-looking dishes that can take the central place of the poultry. A number of roulades, tangines, and deep dish recipes make the effort.

The focus on Fall dishes makes the book a good resource, especially for those people who reluctantly let go of the summer bounty of tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, etc. The dishes apply not only to the holiday meal but to all late year suppers. There are a number of appetizers and first course recipes that allow for any entertaining. In fact, the chapters include Appetizers, Beverages, Soups, Salads, Entrees, Sides, Gravies/Table Sauces, Breads, and Desserts. There a number of vegan options, including vegan pumpkin pie.

At times the recipes are complicated or use perhaps too many ingredients considering alternative preparation methods I've used. Also, there are a few dishes that fall on the bland side when prepared as directed. However, there are some stand-outs: Endive Spears with Goat Cheese and Roasted Garlic; Herbed White Bean Pate; Cider; Mock Champagne; Roasted Red Pepper and Sweet Potato Soup; Pear Salad With Raspberry Vinaigrette; Roasted Asparagus Salad; Vegetable Pancakes with Roasted Plum Sauce; Squash and Spinach Risotto; Baked Pumpkin Stuffed With Vegetable Pilaf; Shiitake and Potato Pot Pie with Polenta Crust; Glazed Shallots and Walnuts; Sweet Potato Stuffing; Great Winter Bread Pudding; and of course the Pumpkin Pie.

Editorial Review:

Being a vegetarian no longer means nibbling at side dishes on America's most food-oriented and meat-focused holiday. From Harvest Vegetable Pie to Succotash-Stuffed Butternut Squash, vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike will love these fresh ideas for a truly satisfying, bountiful, vegetarian Thanksgiving meal. Easy to use, the book is organized from soup-to-nuts, including appetizers, salads, soups and gravies, entrees, side dishes, desserts, breads, and even fresh ideas for beverages. With sumptuous appetizers like Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms, hearty entrees like Herb and Walnut Ravioli and Vegetarian Tourtiere, Baked Stuffed Onions for the side, and a Vegan Pumpkin Pie for dessert, this book will have vegetarians looking forward to the holiday they've been left out of in the past.

Editorial Review:

The South is known for its hospitality, and award-winning chef Elizabeth Terry is known for her ability to create magic in the kitchen. With Savannah Seasons Chef Terry, working with her daughter Alexis, brings all the warmth of the South, and the secrets of her culinary wizardry, into the kitchens of home cooks everywhere.

She began cooking simply for her family--husband Michael, and daughters Alexis and Celeste--but for the past fifteen years Elizabeth Terry, winner of the l995 James Beard Award as Best Chef in the Southeast, and her eponymous restaurant in Savannah, have been known for serving simply prepared, perfectly fresh, innovative dishes in the Southern tradition. Unlike most great restaurants, Elizabeth on 37th is a family enterprise--as is Savannah Seasons. All of the two hundred recipes collected here have been tested by co-author Alexis in the Terry home kitchen (located "above the store") to ensure that they are well within the range of any amateur cook.

From Hearty Okra Gumbo with Chicken and Shrimp to Savannah Red Rice, from Soft Shell Crabs to Ragout of Venison, you will find interpreted within these pages all the native bounty of a rich regional cuisine--shellfish, sweet Vidalia onions, and black-eyed peas; recipes for relishes and marinades; crisp, fresh salads; delicious baked goods, and much more. And throughout there are chef's tips and stories, in the voices of Elizabeth, Alexis, Michael, and Celeste, about the food, about life in Savannah, and about their experiences at "the family restaurant." Savannah Seasons is not only a book of outstanding recipes but a book full of warmth, joy, and hospitality.

Editorial Review:

"When it comes to cooking, there are twelve seasons," says Alfred Portale, the world-renowned chef of the Gotham Bar and Grill restaurant. To him, each month is a season unto itself--not just because crucial ingredients peak at different points during the traditional four seasons, but also because each month carries with it a unique set of emotions and associations.

Alfred Portale's 12 Seasons Cookbook takes the home cook on a deeply personal journey through the year in food. Many chapters are ingredient-driven, such as May, which Portale dubs "The Big Bang of the Culinary Year," because of the proliferation of vegetables such as fava beans, asparagus, and morel mushrooms. August, entitled "Seize the Day," presents recipes that lend themselves to late-summer entertaining. "November--Giving Thanks" is devoted entirely to Portale's interpretations of Thanksgiving standards while "December--Celebrations" shares elegant holiday dishes as well as a selection of canapés and food to give as gifts. Portale also offers his unique approach to months like September in which he responds to the post-Labor Day return to work and school with "Recipes for Busy Times."

As in his award-winning Alfred Portale's Gotham Bar and Grill Cookbook, Portale provides instructions for planning ahead and for how to vary or expand recipes to accommodate ingredient availability and seasonality. He also includes essays on favorite foods and techniques, tips on preserving, advice on what to drink, and suggestions for thematic menus. Brought to breathtaking life with more than one hundred full-color photographs, Alfred Portale's 12 Seasons Cookbook captures the glory and possibility of every month of the year.
