Delicious recipes and great explanations 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have made several of Carol's recipes and they were easy to make and oh so delicious--especially the Molten Chocolate Cakes! Yum!!

Carol's sidebars are very imformative. Her explanations make so much sense and are therefore easy to remember.

This book makes entertaining easy and less stressful because Carol takes you by the hand and guides you all the way through. I would recommend Cooking Class to anyone who enjoys cooking.

Elegant but easy! 5 out of 5 stars.

My family has been fortunate enough to be guests at the Dearth table on more than one occasion. Carol is a terrific cook and teacher. Her book is the result of many years of studying, experimenting and teaching. She has designed her book to be used year round, and has made planning a dinner party easy from start to finish. All you have to do is invite your guests, pick a menu, follow her Master Work Plan and relax. You almost feel like she has done the bulk of the work for you!! P.S. The food presentation in the photos is beautiful and makes you hungry just to look at it.

A marvelous cultural work...not just a cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Even though I'm not African-american ( except in the cultural sense that ALL Americans are somewhat African-american...our culture owing so much to Africa ), I LOVED this book! It explains so much about what I grew up calling "soul food", and in a way that neither puffs-up it's subject or trivializes it in any way. The depth of this book simply must be seen and experienced to be appreciated. there is no way, for instance, that this book could well lend itself to making Afroamerican cooking "chi-chi", as has happened to so many other cuisines that have become trendy. The title says it all: "Welcome...whoever you are. Sit down and eat. Enjoy!" But, the book never panders to the hip and trendy. I also liked the recently published Tuskegee University cookbook, which was, unfortunately, stolen recently. Buy this book if you are at all interested in the origins of many things that most Americans think of as "American", but are actually African in origin.

Editorial Review:

The African-American way with food combines the improvisational techniques that gave the world jazz with the culinary techniques and piquant tastes of the African continent. From Hoppin' John to creamy Sweet Potato Pie, from Benne Seed Wafers to the Gospel Bird, African-American cooking recalls its history and speaks eloquently to the richness and diversity of black culture. In The Welcome Table, Jessica Harris presents African-American food at its finest: over 200 recipes, both traditional and contemporary, combined with historical detail and personal interviews and illustrated with beautiful photographs.

A lifesaver - quick, elegant recipes for last minute company 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

It may never rate as a "classic" cookbook, but over the last 5 years this slim tome has pulled me out of more than one last minute menu scrapes. Recipes like Arrosto di Maile all'Alloro (Pork with Bay Leaves) and Dried Apricots baked with Vanilla set the tone - non-labor intesive recipes with a short list of ingredients -- the emphasis being on the quality of meat, produce & spices rather than fancy techniques or sauces. Barbara Kafka's classic 500 degree roasted chicken and much maligned (but delicious) microwave risotto are by themselves worth the cost of this book!

Great Food Without Fuss 5 out of 5 stars.

I have over 120 cookbooks and this is the best!!!!! This is the one cookbook I keep coming back to. I have honestly tried almost every recipe in the book, and so far everything has been very, very good and very, very easy to make. My only sadness about this book is that it is now out of print and I have to buy a used copy to replace my first one which is falling apart at the seams.

More samples needed 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I'm a visual learner, and therefore, I found this book needing more photos of "table inspirations". Chalmers is a wonderful author, and has written other books, but this book lacked "something" (for my personal taste).

If you can pay a very low price for this book, then that's OK, but if you're paying full price, then you'll be a bit disappointed.

Editorial Review:

Bring a dash of originality to any occasion with Emily Chalmers' ideas for stylish entertaining. Emily first shows how to select the right elements for adorning the table, then she showcases over 20 themed occasions, from children's parties to Thanksgiving dinners, and from a week-night dinner with friends to a sophisticated cocktail party.

Editorial Review:

This stunning book is a must-have for all collectors of open salt cellars, featuring in-depth coverage of examples made with American and English art glass, English and French cameo glass, clear and colored pressed glass, figural French faence, Russian enamels, porcelain, figural silver, and more. There are 941 full color plates showcasing over 3,500 open salts, many previously undocumented. These beautiful pieces were used before salt was processed to flow freely from a shaker. They sometimes held a block of salt which was chopped at with knives; other times they were used with diminutive salt spoons. The open salt became such an important part of fine dining that it remained in use even after the successful adaptation of salt to shakers. The wonderful assortment shown here ranges from eighteenth century Chinese export porcelain to examples made in the 1990s. The authors provide examples in all price ranges and media--some even made from shell, bone, and wood. Steuben, Tiffany, Pairpoint, Moser, Royal Bayreuth, Noritake, Daum Nancy, Meissen, Wedgwood, and Royal Doulton are just a few of the manufacturers represented. Captions provide dimensions, approximate dates of production, marks, values and various production techniques. Each salt is also classified by rarity. This is a comprehensive reference you'll turn to again and again!
