Perfect, Healthy dinner parties 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

With gorgeous photos and well tested recipes, California Cooking is the most important and thoroughly reliable cookbook for a modern home chef. Especially one interested in the vast variety of California and the freshness of California cuisine.
Each chapter begins by describing the mystery of a unique California region, then provides a creative menu suitable to the region's aura and lifestyle and finally gives every recipe needed to serve the complete menu with suggestions for beverages.
In the 5 years that I have used this book, it has never failed to give me dinner parties with "WOW". Each recipe is natural, fresh, interesting and uncomplicated. Each menu well planned with photos to show how to beautifully serve and garnish. It is a visual and practical gem.

Editorial Review:

Inspired by the cookbooks of the past and family recipe collections, Elizabeth Baird's Classic Canadian Cooking has itself become a classic. Her 300 recipes embody the experience of generations of Canadian cooks and profit from the possibilities offered by native produce.

Relying on fresh ingredients abundant in Canada, this book takes its cue from the seasons, with menus for meals and for special occasions. Enjoy Open-Faced Nasturtium Sandwiches, Baked Peameal Bacon, Grilled Steaks with Oyster Stuffing, Pan-Fried Minted Brook Trout, Baked Apples with Rum and Cider Sauce, Lumber Camp Apple Pie, and dozens of other dishes drawn from Canada's many culinary traditions.

Exploring Canada's cookery can be as exciting and delicious as discovering the possibilities of French, Italian or Chinese cuisine. Elizabeth Baird's Classic Canadian Cooking is a splendid compendium of this nation's diverse foodways. (19951213)

I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats! 5 out of 5 stars.

It's about time that a party book was written that still allows you to have fun at your own gathering instead of worrying about the weird French dish in the oven. A great, unpretentious book that features creative ideas and is entertaining to read even if you have no friends to throw a party for. These are parties that are quick, easy, and fun that won't stress you out or empty your wallet. I highly recommend it!

This book made me look good 5 out of 5 stars.

I live in Key West FL and as you can probably imagine a quite a town for parties. Like most Conchs I hold 2 jobs to cover the costs of living large in paradise so I don't have the time(or the creativity truth be told)to pull off a party that measures up. The 2 parties I have thrown so far using this book has made me quite the center of attention amongst my (rapidly expanding) circle of friends. Two words "BUY IT!" I can't wait to throw the "Done Yer Duty" party after the holidays. p.s. The book is also very funny. Too bad there is not a 6-Star rating available.

Editorial Review:

Instant parties are the wave of the future. They're happenin'. They're now. Literally. It's what instant means. If you have tableware, music, a wee bit of know-how in the kitchen, and a few this-and-thats to use for props, you can whip up any one of fifty instant parties in a matter of hours. And this book shows you how to do it without even breaking a sweat.

Food that brings you home to mom! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Even if I didn't like to cook, this book would tempt me to try some of Mr. Hadamuscin's recipes. They are written in a clear manner, and the photographs are outstanding. Mr. Hadamuscin's recipes are a tribute to food, family and home. I've made many of his treats, and I have never been disappointed. His recipes are presented in a format such as "An Old Salem Pumpkin Supper", or "A Comforting Supper", where the entire menu is presented. All the thinking is done for you! I have many of his books, and look forward to any future publications.

A treasure to savor the enjoyment of living in his prose! 4 out of 5 stars.

Like the other two Hadamuscin books that I own, this one is a treasure to read and look at. He makes a person feel enwrapped by the warmth of good times, whether in a large party, an intimate dinner or with the traditions of America and family.

It is his descriptions that I treasure and some of the recipes, though not all that I have tried work for me.

Splendid photographs as well.

Editorial Review:

Easy and Elegant 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I love to cook and this is my favorite cookbook. This is a collection of menus, with interesting combinations of courses. Each recipe is very clearly explained. The author uses store bought ingredients whenevr possible to save time, such as chutneys, etc. The food is very elegant, reasonably economical, and simple to prepare quickly. I found it at a "buck a book" store, you might too.

Raise Your Cooking a Notch 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this cookbook several years ago and highly recommend it. The recipes are delicious and a little bit different from the dinner party standards you're probably familiar with. The book itself is very readable; the directions are user-friendly and detailed and it opens with two well-written essays about grocery shopping and stocking the pantry. Also, Merser cites Peg Bracken (of the "I Hate to Cook Book") as one of her inspirations, which is a sure vote-getter as far as I'm concerned. My only caveat is that, having cooked a few of these recipes, I don't think they're quite as easy as they're made out to be. I imagine the neophyte cook might get a bit flummoxed if trying them out for the first time. Also, the side dishes/accompaniments she recommends can add quite a bit of work time to dinner, although they're very good. My take on the book overall was that the menus as they stand are probably not good weeknight meals without simplifying them at least a bit.

My advice: this book is great for cooking company dinners, but you might want to try out the recipes first for practice before making them for your guests. That said, the menus are not *that* hard and your guests will love what you've made.

The worst book ever in the whole world 1 out of 5 stars.
24 of 24 people found this review helpful.

I cannot believe I spent money on this!
The book covers the concepts in starting a small business in a very basic format. I mean very basic, with thoughts shared on "you might need a computer" and "you will need determination to make it."
I wanted to find out about laws, kitchen standards, good practices for timing, advice on finding leased goods for large parties. Instead, the book is riddled with lines such as "you can lease equipment, or you can buy it."

Awful 1 out of 5 stars.

I was looking for a catering book at my local book store & this was the only one they had. I paged through it & it was terrible. I agree with the other reviewer that this was a very basic book. I was looking for more information on the requirement of having a commercial kitchen in California. While I didn't necessarily expect to find specific state information, all the book said was you may be required to get a commercial kitchen. No resources on *where* I would find that information or who I would contact. And when I looked at the business card section, all it said was to get business cards & stationary with your business logo - duh. It sounded to me like this was a book written by someone who might have general business start up experience, but no catering business experience. It was very generic.

Editorial Review:

Classic, elegant, and even whimsical folded napkins can be so striking that you don't need a centerpiece! Some, like the Swan, are purely decorative. Others, arranged in basket or box shapes, hold food or small gifts nestled among the folds. Still more are practical: the Silverware Cover is suited for dining al fresco, because the weighted napkin won't blow away. Coordinate meals with napkin designs: for example, a Geisha Fan could accompany Japanese cuisine. Arrange lotus blossoms, water lilies, even a special "Bridal Train" for a wedding banquet!

No answers to important cases! 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The book would be great except you have no idea what the solution to the problem is because there are no answers! Not recommended for new managers unless it comes with an answer book next time.

Editorial Review:

KEY BENEFIT: Addressing clinical nutrition and foodservice management issues in a variety of settings, this book contains 34 cases and concise examples of managerial issues that teach, motivate, and prepare individuals in the field of dietetics. The cases make an excellent substitute for actual managerial experience, and help learners meet many management based competencies. Broad topics coverage includes menu management, purchasing, production, service, safety and sanitation, management and human resources, clinical nutrition management, and financial management. For individuals preparing for an internship in dietetics.
