Editorial Review:

This new series of fifteen books - The Food Service Professional Guide TO Series from the editors of the Food Service Professional are the best and most comprehensive books for serious food service operators available today.

These step-by-step guides on a specific management subject range from finding a great site for your new restaurant to how to train your wait staff and literally everything in between. They are easy and fast -to-read, easy to understand and will take the mystery out of the subject. The information is "boiled down" to the essence. They are filled to the brim with up to date and pertinent information.

The books cover all the bases, providing clear explanations and helpful, specific information. All titles in the series include the phone numbers and web sites of all companies discussed. What you won’t find are wordy explanations, tales of how someone did it better, or a scholarly lecture on the "theory". Think of them as "Cliff Notes TM" on the subject matter.

Every paragraph in each of the books are comprehensive, well researched, engrossing, and just plain fun-to-read, yet are packed with interesting ideas. You’ll be using your highlighter a lot! The best part aside from the content is they are very moderately price. You can also purchase the whole 15 book series the isbn number is 0-910627-26-6. You are bound to get a great new idea to try on every page if not out of every paragraph. Do not be put off by the low price, these books really do deliver the critical information and eye opening ideas you need you to succeed without the fluff so commonly found in more expensive books on the subject. Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

Jack Bishop's commitment to simplicity and his talent for fine-tuning recipes so they work perfectly in real time make his books favorites among vegetarians and occasional vegetarians alike. As a busy husband, father of two young children, cookbook author, magazine and book editor, and head cook for his family, Bishop demands a lot from the meals that make it into his repertoire. They must be convenient dishes that he can prepare at the end of a day in an hour or less with readily available ingredients. They must satisfy his and his wife's discriminating palates. And last, but emphatically not least, they have to pass muster with his five- and nine-year-old daughters.
In A Year in a Vegetarian Kitchen, Bishop guides you through the seasons with 248 of his favorite everyday recipes, which deliciously embody his philosophy of "shop locally, cook globally, and keep things easy." Cooking with seasonal produce, he says, is the best way to bring a welcome variety to the table. In spring, dinner might be Soft Tacos with Garlicky Greens or Stir-Fried Rice Noodles with Asparagus and Eggs, perhaps with a side of Sugar-Snap Peas with Fried Ginger. Summer brings Savory Corn Griddle Cakes or Fresh Tomato Pizza with Avocado. For fall, Root Vegetable Tarts with Rosemary or Orecchiette with Spicy Broccoli is on the menu. And in winter, when farmers' markets are a distant memory in most parts of the country, there are dozens of flavorful choices, including Pan-Glazed Tofu with Thai Red Curry Sauce, Caribbean Black Beans with Sautéed Plantains, and Grilled Cheese Sandwiches with Mushrooms.
In concise sidebars that accompany each recipe, Bishop shares tips gleaned from his ten years' experience at Cook's Illustrated, covering everything from choosing a good vegetable broth to picking the best potatoes for mashing to mastering the secrets of successful stir-frying.

No new ideas for a woman of culture 2 out of 5 stars.
16 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I regret this purchase. As one reviewer said, this is just a coffetable book. It doesnt introduce any new idea to an educated woman. Who cant roll a napkin and tie a ribbon on it ??? It doesnt take a professional caterer to know that !!! Funny, but an out of print 1960's cookbook by Mary and Vincent Price ``A Treasury.....'' showed far more intricate, elegant, and exquisite napkin foldings. The utensils showed in Tabletops are not even for very dining ! Worse, an old item was made to pass off as an antique centerpiece and I am a professional antique collector. I lived in Europe and this book does not deserve space in any European home or library. What I saw here, I see frequently in crafts store windows in small towns. DONT BUY. I got instead ``Perfect Setting'' by Peri Wolfman (?) and finally, I got something intelligent with truly new ideas to captivate an intelligent woman. At best, give this book to a grade school kid.

Editorial Review:

Setting a stunning table need not be confined to special occasions. As renowned author and designer Barbara Milo Ohrbach brilliantly demonstrates, any meal can be made special with the proper visual approach. The ingredients need not be fine china and matching silver; the real key is to develop a creative look for your table. Tabletops is filled with gorgeous color photos and thorough explanations on how to find inspiration, play with color, make and/or coordinate accessories, arrange flowers, and find and add the right decorative touches.

More Than Just Folding... 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

This book is very well laid out. Background information on table setting, napkin etiquette, simple instructions, and large color photos make this book an excellent choice...especially for a novice like me!
The book contains not only napkin folding techniques, it gives information on various napkin fabrics, basic sizes used for each meal, napkin etiquette, information on napkin care & storage, and stain removal tips. Also, there is a page containing proper table-setting etiquette.
The book contains forty napkin folds divided into three categories; Elegance, Charm, and Whimsy. Included in the types of folds are designs for holding items such as place cards, flatware, or food (the "Duchess Crown" is photographed holding a muffin). I have practiced most all the folds and I especially enjoyed making "Sunset Sails" as well as the heart-shaped "A Little Romance" folds. My "Bread Box" fold was a little wimpy as I practiced with napkins that aren't well starched.
Instructions for the napkin folding are given in simple, easy-to-follow steps and a picture of each step is included. A large color photo of the final outcome is included. Most of the folds are done in three or four simple steps. (A few contain up to five steps whereas the "Bread Box" and "Duchess Crown" each contin seven steps).
I found this book delightful in that it was easy for the novice to use and supplied that little extra something with its tips for table setting and napkin etiquette as well as storage/care of linens. I plan to share this book with my friends who like to host dinner parties.

Editorial Review:

When the finest china and polished silverware sparkle on a beautiful tablecloth, when a lovely floral centerpiece adds an extra note of grace, when shimmering candles create romance, no ordinary napkin will do. So transform those simple linen squares into something dazzling by following precisely photographed instructions and a few simple folds. A primer of the easiest possible techniques will get you started, and the projects-divided into chapters focusing on elegance, charm, and whimsy-range from the pretty Water Lily to the sweet and appealing Maiden's Cap, from a frilly deco-style fan to the dramatic, origami-like fleur-de-lis. These chic and decorative folded napkins are what every well-dressed table should wear!

Good cookbook, nothing my kids would ever eat. 2 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

This is a cookbook. That's it. Now, what is so bad about that? When I got this book I thought it would be more of a party-planning book, such as Christopher Lowell's: themes, and dishes to go with the themes. But it's not. It's just a book telling about how she likes to cook with her kids and other families, the fact that she is a Food Network producer and trained chef, and all the places she has lived in. The dishes are arranged the usual way: appetizers, mains, desserts, etc. There are maybe four-themed "parties," and all she does is reference the page numbers of the recipes, and several themes use the exact same recipes for each!

Now tell me something: would your kids eat dishes like

pickled shrimp with mango and fennel? (and would you serve shrimp to a crowd of people, kids included?)

duck and andouille jambalaya? (and once again, would you serve duck to a crowd, only to be thrown out and wasted by the children?)

grilled lobsters with garlic butter? (um, yeah, what part of this are the children going to be able to do? Grilling around children? My idea of a supervision nightmare.)

This is a beautiful cookbook full of color photos and beautiful graphic design (not a photo for each dish, however). And there are some kid-friendly recipes, like Spaghetti carbonara and Parmesan chicken fingers. But do you need a kids' cookbook for that? Your standard Betty Crocker cookbook has these recipes, I'm sure.

This is a fun idea, and cooking with your kids is wonderful. But this is not marketed correctly. If you're going to cook with $40 ingredients, don't try it out on your kids or others' kids. Let them Try your entree at a restaurant and THEN make it at home.
