Editorial Review:

Socially inclined but time-deprived? Want to see friends for dinner, but can't do more than order takeout or meet in a restaurant? Well, help is here. From Beverly Mills and Alicia Ross-whose nationally syndicated column reaches millions of readers through 115 papers comes the perfect cookbook for the harried would-be host and hostess.

Desperation Entertaining! is filled with 200 marvelous recipes for impressive dinner party food. Desperation Entertaining! is a complete game plan for having guests over (children included) without having to spend more than 20 minutes on a dish, or 20 minutes per cook-ahead phase. There are tips on saving time (buy prepeeled garlic, doctor supermarket potato salad with fresh chopped onions and paprika); sanity (tie the bottle opener to the cooler); and money (sangria costs less than wine). But of course the genius of the book is in the recipes: Cajun Catfish Gumbo, Cabernet Pasta Sauce with Italian Sausage, Greek Stifado with Artichokes, Citrus Shrimp Kebabs, Grilled Pork Chops with Southern Peach Salsa. Plus plenty of homemade desserts that won't break the host, including Rocky Road Brownie Sundaes, Berkshires Blueberry Crisp, and Sunset Key Lime Pies. Who's coming over next week?

Editorial Review:

For more than twenty years, Paul Burrell has enjoyed an extraordinary connection with the British Crown. Starting out as footman to Queen Elizabeth, he went on to become Princess Diana's butlerand her closest confidant, the man she referred to as her "rock."

The Prince and Princess of Wales were famed for the superb style in which they entertained, and Paul Burrell oversaw every aspect of each soiree, from the simplest of brunches to the most elaborate dinner parties, both at home and abroad. Now this expert on etiquette and palace life reveals the secrets of royal style and how you too can host events IN THE ROYAL MANNER.

What is the proper order of courses in a meal? How many glasses and pieces of cutlery should be at each place setting? How does a butler in Buckingham Palace decant a wine? How can you give your overnight guests the true royal treatment?

In this fully illustrated, lavishly produced volume, Paul Burrell escorts you through a typical year of seasonal occasions. Here are detailed guidelines on etiquette and entertaining, as well as the royal standards for teas, picnics, children's parties, simple suppers and brunches, holiday meals, formal weddings, and other celebrations.

Unique to this book are the menus and more than fifty longtime popular recipes (including particular favorites of Princess Diana such as Pears in Port Wine with Cinnamon Ice Cream), classic Victorian dishes, and the ever-stylish Pimms, a cool summer cocktail made with fruited lemonade and gin. Paul Burrell also shares his knowledge of palace history and lore, along with his special perspective on the traditions of the royal family and his treasured memories of the late Princess of Wales.

From detailed directions on how to fold napkins into elegant designs, to tips on formal seating arrangements and proper table manners, to step-by-step instructions for creating elaborate floral centerpieces, IN THE ROYAL MANNER has everything you need to make a party in your home truly fit for a king.

Delicious and Insightful 5 out of 5 stars.

No need to buy a ticket to France.....this book takes you there in ways only MFK Fisher and possibly Richard Olney managed. I loved it and continue to mine its rich vein of recipes. It seems extraordinary that an American could so truly and sensitively capture the culture of France.

Visit 18 French households, from Brittany to Provence, from farmhouse to apartment, and experience each setting's traditional cuisine rustique or haute cuisine. 70 recipes here include stuffed duck; fine cheese, orange chocolate cake, and succulent seafood.

Cooking is contagious and can be fun... Who knew?!?! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Debbie did a cooking demonstration for an organization I belong to,,, making several items from the book. Everything seemed so simple to make, yet the end results were so awesome! I have made many things from her book and even plan my parties using her book as my guide--listing recipes, page numbers and making shopping lists. I had a farewell party for a friend and made several items from the book and everyone raved... my friends kept questioning whether I really made everything. I finally pulled out my menu list with page numbers along with the cook book to convince them. Since then, at least one friend has purchased the book and told me she too loves it and has made many of the items for family and friends with similar results. Every time I see her, she thanks me again for introducing her to the book! I grew up in a large family and learned to cook "country-style" from my mom and grandmother. This book has introduced me to new ways of cooking, maybe a little more gourmet! Thanks Debbie for making cooking and entertaining fun again!

Editorial Review:

In Good Friends Great Tastes, Debbie intertwined the lives and recipes from the many friendships she has developed and maintained throughout her life. There are quotes about friendship and stories about recipe contributors and over 375 delicious, easy to follow, gourmet recipes.

Wonderful Party Ideas & Recipes 5 out of 5 stars.

The Orlando Sentinel says this is "a hip book with recipes for cocktails, tapas and full-course feasts. Learn how to make Cuba libres, Yucatan tacos and Caribbean crepes with Canary Islands hot sauce."
Just reading the recipe titles makes me want to try them all. You also get tips for decorating, music and attire to go with the recipes. With these, your next pool party or ladies lunch will be a sensation. The vibrant color photos spice up the book.
Some of the recipes included are lobster salad, simple sangria, brandied pineapple wheels, turkey empanadas and many more.
Another good book for theme parties is Trader Vic's Tiki Party.

Editorial Review:

Dinner under the stars in a formal garden, a tea amid the roses, rustic breakfast in an Adirondack camp, a harvest luncheon . . . these are parties that celebrate the best that nature has to offer, paired with food and drink perfect for the surroundings. You know how much enjoyment and relaxation your garden brings you—why not share it with friends and family? Throughout Garden Parties, Suzy Bales inspires fancifully fun parties that transform outdoor spaces into enchanting playgrounds for the senses—the plants, the decor, and the food intermingle to create truly memorable themes.

But Garden Parties isn’t just a beautiful book for inspiration. It’s also eminently practical, with how-to instruction on prolonging the life of cut flowers, constructing wreaths, and using a birdbath as an hors d’oeuvres stand, as well as making edible treats such as candied petals, floral-decorated ice cubes, and flowers for salads and garnishes.

And Garden Parties is packed with delicious recipes perfect for the occasion: the spring luncheon features the spring treasures Asparagus Bundles with Chives and Lemon Butter, Mustard and Garlic Grilled Butterflied Leg of Lamb with Fresh Mint Sauce, and Creamy Watercress Soup; the midsummer eve’s romantic dinner includes seductive Champagne Framboise, Seared Scallops on Rose Petals, and Blooming Salad. All the recipes are designed to utilize advance preparation, allowing you to greet and enjoy your guests instead of struggling with last-minute details.

Whether you have a pocket-sized terrace in the city, a simple suburban backyard, or extravagant country acres, your garden can provide the inspiration and the setting for the perfect party. Garden Parties shows you how.

A Tiffany Christmas 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

A Tiffany Christmas, by John Loring was published in 1996. Though not that old, it has become a collectible. This is a collection of over 165 color images of vignettes created in the store, or on location at someone's home. It is an OTT, Over The Top, type of styling a photo, using every bit of Tiffany's merchandise in the shot as possible. It proscribes the go-go 1980's era of conspicuous consumer acquisition, that lasted well into the 1990's as a way of having style. More was definitely more.
I recommend this book if you are interested in the commercial history of Christmas in the USA, and if you are interested in the history of Tiffany's.
The photos are gorgeous eye candy, a fantastic compendium of Tiffany's merchandise, past and present.

Editorial Review:

A lavishly illustrated guide overflowing with photographs of opulent table settings and decorations collected by Tiffany & Company also offers holiday stories, craft ideas, historical vignettes, recipes, and tips on entertaining in the Tiffany style.

Unfulfilled potential 3 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

In "Dinner is Served", Arthur Inch hopes to leave us with the rapidly disappearing rules for old-fashioned gracious living. With his extensive experience in service, he is most definitely qualified to do so, and yet he only offers glimpses of his total knowledge. While many of the things in this book will never actually be used by the average person due to their expense and impracticality, there is still much that can and should be put to use in every-day living. While some may view these rules or standards as superfluous or even snobbish, the fact is that these have all been developed over many years and each has its own very legitimate reason for being. The complaints I have with this book are ones that could have been easily remedied. When discussing and describing the various types of tableware, more pictures would have been useful. Only select pieces have been illustrated, leaving the others subject to the whims of the imagination. And while he mentions several different napkin folds, and even specifies his own personal favorite fold, he never explains how to make these folds or shows how they are supposed to look. The sections on how to be the perfect host/hostess and guest, and on how to eat certain different foods could prove to be useful in reducing the potential for embarrassment in the future, and the section explaining the hierarchy of menservants was quite interesting, even if only as a history lesson that serves to demonstrate the logistical nightmares that formal dining can create.

Editorial Review:

Elegant entertaining is always in style, and who better to explain the finer points of the art of the table than Arthur Inch, a veteran English butler who served as technical advisor for the film Gosford Park? With a historian's appreciation for the traditions of fine English homes, he discusses the elements of the table, including flatware and silver, china and glassware, serving vessels, and table decorations, as well as table and serving etiquette. "Although most of the book is written in a formal tone, the writers aren't above occasionally letting loose, and they amuse themselves with such pretty tricks as making music with glassware. This guide is fun to read as a light history as well as for preparation for a formal dinner. --Publishers Weekly
