Editorial Review:

Dr. Phil fans should be delighted with a book of more than 100 recipes that complement his best-selling Ultimate Weight Solution and pledge to "taste better and cost less" while avoiding refined carbohydrates, saturated fats, salt, and sugars. Though your taste buds might have to readjust a bit, Dr. Phil promises that you won't find "skimpy diet-type meals that taste like wallpaper paste," nor will you have to fix separate meals for non-dieting family members. If you need structure, his "rapid start" 14-day menu plan, averaging 1200 calories/day, will get you going. You'll find updates of familiar classics with Huevos Rancheros, BLT (using turkey bacon or meatless bacon and light mayo), No-Fry Chicken-Fried Steak, Southern Oven-Fried Chicken (Grape-Nuts and egg white batter), Mac and Cheese, Guacamole (with tofu), and Three Bean Chili. Or explore new tastes with Curried Tabbouleh, Moroccan Chicken, Halibut Baked in Packets, and Asian Tofu Stew. Desserts range from Poached Pears to Apricot Cheesecake (Chocolate lovers will find Mocha Fudge Pudding, but no chocolate cake.) Recipes include a nutritional analysis: calories, protein, carbohydrates, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, fiber, sugars, and sodium. Most recipes seem heavy on meat and light on vegetables, however. --Joan Price

My favorite from Moosewood! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The recipes in "Low-Fat Favorites" aren't time-consuming to prepare like the classic Moosewood recipes, making them more weeknight friendly. There are many "tricks" to make a dish seem creamy or cheesy without adding any cream or cheese -- all satisfaction, no fat!

I made Roasted Vegetables Caribbean Style for a potluck the other night to rave reviews. It was easy to prepare and SO good (page 227).

The "Menu Suggestions" feature and the indication of time the recipe takes to prepare are great for planning family dinners or dinner parties, and are included with each recipe.

Editorial Review:

The first Moosewood Cookbook--loved for its cozy, comforting food--mused oil, eggs, and dairy products so lavishly that it was extensively revised in 1992 to fit our changing diet. Now, the Moosewood Collective takes an even more extreme step: recipes in Moosewood Restaurant Low-Fat Favorites are so intentionally healthful that they put the word right on the cover of this chubby book filled with lean recipes (many dishes get the fat down to a modest 16-17% of their total calories). Still, the 280-plus recipes offer the bold, pan-ethnic flavors that have won the Moosewood Collective cookbooks so many fans.

Editorial Review:

Pickling food seems like a form of culinary alchemy to most of us. Or we recall it as something grandmothers used to do, laboring over heaps of vegetables and huge, steaming kettles to turn out jars of jewel-like pickles and piquant chutneys.

In the first chapter of The Joy of Pickling, Linda Ziedrich demystifies the pickling process. She explains the difference between fresh pickles made with vinegar and longer-keeping, salt-preserved, fermented pickles. Her detailed explanation of canning methods, including low-temperature pasteurization, shows how to avoid risky problems.

After reading the opening of this pickle primer, go straight to the "Quick" and "Freezer Pickle" chapters and discover how easy it is to make Green Olives with Lemon and Thyme and Freezer Dill Slices without any sterilizing, boiling, or safety issues. In addition, you get to enjoy them within 24 hours. When you are more confident, let Ziedrich guide you through pickling Spicy Broccoli, Pig Ears, Korean Kimchi, and Irish Corned Beef. Her three recipes for pickled eggs are also bound to please. --Dana Jacobi

Book #1 - Special Diets for Special Kids is available at AUTISM TODAY for $29.95. I don't understand the $92 charge listed by Amazon...when they have Special Diets for Special Kids TWO available for $19.95.

Great starting place! 4 out of 5 stars.

This was the first book I read before starting the GFCF diet. It gave a ton of information. Some easy to understand, some, I hate to admit, went over my head unless I really had the opportunity to concentrate! The one thing I strongly disagree with is the assertion that this diet is not much more expensive than what you're spending now in cow's milk, etc. It totally is- even if you bake from scratch. All the specialty flours, etc. really add up. The switch to rice milk is a bleep on the checkbook balance compared to the switch to gluten free cooking and eating.
All in all, I'm very happy with this book. Some recipes are better than others, but the wealth of over all information in this book is great. I would definitely do a search for better prices, though! I found it for around $30.

Editorial Review:

Using a common-sense approach to a complex subject, Dr. Lewis, a mother of autistic children herself, offers specific examples of food allergies and intolerances which impact health and behavior in children with autism or related developmental disorders, and provides gluten/casein-free recipes; lists of vitamins, minerals, and supplements; and much more.

Seriously, she was really a pioneer...and did many great things for others, unselfishly, to promote global healthcare. As to the book, another great Wigmore book with easy, clear and precise ideas one can readily put into motion...and soon be eating delicious sprouts all year long, using her funky recipes. If you're a city-dweller, she also explains how-to for apartment living. Great book to offer to any beginning living-foods vegetarian you may know. Good investment. Reasonable price.

Just another book on being Vegan 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The book is a very easy read. Styling of the read is conversationalist. It is good. They just basically restate why being Vegan is good and any other diet is bad. All in all, I would recommend just getting it from the library and save your money for a more in depth book like Becoming Vegan or The China Study.

Must Have Tough Skin 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I thought this book was good and provided a lot of information, but the authors were in my opinion, a bit too judgemental. Ive been a vegetarian for years and have been a vegan only a few months. It has been a challenge for me with determining whether a product has animal by-products. The authors make you feel like the worst person in the world if you call yourself a vegan and accidently eat a by product. They really hard core put you down if you are not a "perfect vegan" which earlier in the book they praised people for trying. Towards the end of this book it turned into a "BASH ALL THE VEGANS WHO ARE TRYING BUT MIGHT NOT BE 100% YET" which turned me more off to veganism than on. So, if you do not have tough skin, do not read this book.

Editorial Review:

Curious about veganism? Want to be a vegan? Already a vegan? Just wondering how to be vegan without going insane? In this informative and practical guide on veganism, team Torres helps you love your inner vegan freak. Loaded with tips, advice, stories, and comprehensive lists of resources that no vegan should live without, this book is key to helping you thrive as a happy, healthy, and sane vegan in a decidedly non-vegan world. Witty, opinionated, and eminently useful.
