Great, Quick Low Carb 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book at COSTCO for very cheap. I've been on the lowcarb lifestyle off and on.

The recipes are 15 minutes start to finish and taste great. I am considered a very good cook by friends and family and have been impressed with the wide range of flavors. Other reviews of "very hard to find ingredients" is just not true. This has become our go-to recipe book for the week when we come home from work.

Favorite recipes:

Easy Mexican Chicken
Microwaved Fish and Asparagus with Terragon Mustard
Sweet and Sour Pork (also we've made with chicken)
Balsamic Lamb Skillet (also made with Beef)
Chicken Skillet Roma
Chili Burgers
Asian Pork and Cabbage
Unstuffed Cababage

Get this book---it's great!

Pleased, from a new vegetarian 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am a new vegetarian and have never been fond of cooking. I was a bit scared of getting into the vegetarian world with not knowing what to eat and not wanting to cook anything. So, I chose this book because it has recipes that have quick prep time and most recipes are for 1 or 2 servings. This is perfect for a person that lives by themselves, and you can always double the recipe for extra leftovers or for when you have friends over.

I'm not a student, just kitchen-inept. I enjoy that I am not overwhelmed by the recipes in this book and due to a fast pace life style, I actually find the time to cook these meals!

Editorial Review:

During his 40 years of medical practice and in his nationally syndicated newspaper column, Dr. Gott's patients and readers have continually asked him for a way to lose weight that is both simple and foolproof. In response, he developed the No Flour, No Sugar diet which has prompted countless weight loss success stories from his patients, thousands of letters from readers of his column raving about their successes, and a New York Times bestselling book.

DR. GOTT'S NO FLOUR, NO SUGAR DIET is about as
easy as it gets. All you need to do is eliminate flour and added sugar from your diet. That means no bread, bagels, cookies, or cakes, but it doesn't mean you can't still enjoy lean meats, rice, low-fat dairy products, vegetables, and fruits. It doesn't call for counting calories or grams of food, it allows you to choose from a wide range of food (once you hit your goal weight, you can even reintroduce some items with flour and sugar back into your diet), and it's totally affordable. In this book, you will learn how to:

-Satisfy your sweet tooth without sugar
-Plan for success and stay on track
-Curb your carb cravings without flour
-Keep the weight off in the long term

The book also includes firsthand questions and challenges from his readers, and Dr. Gott's informative and helpful responses. Complete with recipes for Breakfast; Soups, Salads, Wraps; Snacks and Appetizers; Entrees; and Desserts; and easy-to-follow meal plans, this is a simple and effective diet that delivers phenomenal, fast results.

Important book for its time with a real message. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Food Revolution has a message for anyone who never thinks twice about the consequences of their food choices. It will even enlighten those who feel confident that they make the right food choices because they listen to their doctors. And its message is strong even to those who think vegetarians are prudes and are missing out on "the finer things." Robbins lays out the facts, using research articles as evidence, to criticize the food industry's claims and present the contradicting findings resulting from good sound science. Using this method he exposes the stark realities of the American diet that for the most part will get you to wonder why you have lived your life without ever wondering about such things as where your food comes from, how it was made, and what impact it has on the environment. Robbins explains to you the enormous impact that the single act of eating has on your body, the human population, and the planet itself. This book is huge in its scope and contains facts from hundreds of sources, and its rather objective delivery makes it a necessary read for anyone interested in studying diet, nutrition, disease, environmental protection, science, and agriculture. His sources are sometimes repetitive, be it the same person or organization, and as a result at these times his arguments lack clout. But these sources are solid and true, therefore not taking very much away from Robbins' message to America about the hazards of the current American diet.

Editorial Review:

John Robbins, the man who started the "food revolution" with the ground-breaking Diet for a New America, boldly posits that, collectively, our personal diet can save ourselves and the world. His latest book presents compelling new information regarding the fields of nutrition, heart disease and cancer, agribusiness, and bioengineering. It discusses the latest discoveries about the relationships between diet and longevity, aging, and vitality. Armed with powerful statistics, fascinating viewpoints, and incisive exposes, Robbins argues for adopting a vegetarian diet for personal well-being as well as for the well-being of the planet.

Editorial Review:

Organic food is synonymous with premium quality, the deepest, richest taste, conscientious farming, and optimum health. It’s what we need to feed our kids, what we deserve to feed ourselves. And no one is doing more to popularize organic food that Myra Goodman, a mother, a creative cook, and most significantly, co-owner of Earthbound Farm, the world’s largest grower and purveyor of organic produce.

In Food to Live By, a dazzling full-color cookbook, Myra Goodman offers an utterly appealing, new casual style of cooking based on using the best ingredients, organic or otherwise. The dishes are irresistible: Sweet Corn Chowder. Spinach, Feta and Mushroom Quiche. Foggy Day Chili. Merlot-Braised Short Ribs with Cipollini Onions. Spicy Chicken Lettuce Wraps. Ginger Lime Salmon. Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Spiced Orange Sauce. Blue Cheese Smashed Potatoes. Coconut Lemongrass Sorbet. Cherry Panna Cotta. Farm Stand Carrot Cake. Plus, throughout are Farm-Fresh Ingredient boxes—on sorrel, corn, asparagus, artichokes— cooking and shopping tips, and health notes.

Before Myra and her husband, Drew, founded Earthbound Farm, they tended a small organic raspberry patch in Carmel, California—and Myra baked (and sold) amazing Raspberry Corn Muffins, plus jams, and more. Then Earthbound grew to offer organic lettuce mixes to local restaurants, and eventually the rest of the country. When The Organic Kitchen at Earthbound Farm opened, it was yet another venue for Myra, and the cafĂ©’s chefs, to share delicious recipes and ideas. Now Food to Live By brings this organic revolution to everyone who cares about what they eat.

Pocket book for the supermarket 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This purse-size book is indespensible! It lists total carbs, fiber, net carbs, protein, fat, and calories to help you make the best choices, or even endulge a little while knowing how much you are doing so!

My copy is dog-eared and I carry it everywhere with me. When I think I might want something (like grapes, for example), I can look them up in the booklet right there in the supermarket and decide if they will fit into my diet plan or not. (The grapes were too high in carbs, in case you were wondering.)

The book also lists many common and name brand items, both high and low carb.

It is split into several sections such as beverages; milk, cream, butter, and yogurt; breads, muffins and crackers; fruit; pancakes, waffles, and breakfast pastries; poultry; sweeteners, jams, and syrups; etc.

It even has a section for "dining out" with tips on dining away from home, and a "fast food" section with counts for popular foods at fast food restaurants.

If you are watching either your fat or your carbs, you need this book!

Editorial Review:

Dr. Atkins' New Carbohydrate Gram Counter has a slightly misleading name. While grams of carbohydrate are listed for various foods, there are also protein and fat grams listed for each entry. With more than 1,200 listings, including hundreds of brand-name products, this makes a handy, portable reference. It should be noted, however, that that the Gram Counter is really meant as a companion to Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution; the brief dietary information included in the introduction to the Gram Counter isn't of much use by itself.

Editorial Review:

While common dieting wisdom suggests that those who need to lose weight must be eating too much, the newest discoveries in weight loss science now reveal that what’s not being eaten can hinder weight reduction. Fiber is turning out to be the silver bullet of dieting—because it can fill you up on fewer calories, dampen cravings for fattening foods, and dramatically improve your overall health.

Consuming the right amount of dietary fiber can have profound health benefits. It can cut the risk of heart disease by 30 percent; lower cholesterol by as much as 13 points; decrease inflammation; drop blood pressure; balance blood sugar; improve memory; reduce the risk for breast, colon, and endometrial cancer; and boost the immune system. Unfortunately, ramping up fiber levels too quickly can also cause digestive distress. With an easy-to follow, 4 week plan, Prevention’s Fiber Up Slim Down Cookbook shows how to switch over to high-fiber living without experiencing excessive gas or uncomfortable bloating.

Of course, for any weight-loss plan to work, the food must be fabulous. Prevention’s Fiber Up Slim Down Cookbook is packed with more than 200 delicious, fiber-rich recipes that work with any fiber-rich diet plan including home-style dishes like Roasted Sweet and Russet Potato Salad and Mom’s Turkey Meatloaf, tasty new favorites like Curried Beef with Pineapple and Coconut, and sweet treats like Ginger–Sweet Potato Cheesecake and Pumpkin Fruitcake.

Help for a Celiac Newbie 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I had never heard of Celiac Disease until I got a call from my Dr saying I had tested positive. After five minutes on the Internet I began to cry!! What CAN I eat?? This is the first cook book I bought when at a nutritional store for the first time (Talk about overwhelmed!!). As I read through this book I received my first ray of hope that I CAN do this. I have tried some of the recipes all with good results. The bread I made is simply delicious. I actually can have sandwiches!!! I am going to give away all my other cookbooks ( I have quite a collection from the past forty years or so) and just keep Bette's. I will say that some of the ingredients are not the most healthy (Butter flavored Crisco), but let me be honest, I didn't always cook or eat totally healthy (croissants, pie, cake, cinnamon buns) before my diagnoses! It is a wonderful encouragement to me to know, that while I cannot make a steady diet of these treats, I can make them for myself fairly easily. I highly recommend this cookbook for those who are willing to put some initial time into advance preparation. Frankly, I am thrilled to know I can enjoy pumpkin pie and my family's traditional corn bread stuffing this Thanksgiving!

Editorial Review:

This is the perfect book for those who must put together a gluten-free meal at the of the long working day. With new bean flours to add to the other gluten- free flours, there are also fantastic recipes for breads, cakes, cookies, pies, and pastries.
