Lovely addition to every vegetarian parent's cookbook collection 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I love reading cookbooks. I'm vegetarian. And I have to fix several school lunches per day. So getting the book was a no-brainer for me. I've tried several recipes so far. Some my kids love others they don't. What became pretty clear to me is that the "5-star-rating" by Jennifer's son (the prerequisite for a lunch to get into the book) is -of course- quite subjective. And I know that food preferences in kids do change over time, so I'm hopeful.
The book is full of great ideas, some quick, some more time consuming and also some fancy lunch box stuff. I love that I can make every recipe without having to substitute meat items and it helps me to cook vegan more often (which makes so much sense ethically and environmentally). Great are the recipes from all over the world. Japanese, ethiopian anyone?

Really, really good! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I'm not vegan, so I originally bought this book for some healthy side-dish ideas. Since purchasing, I find myself preparing entire vegan meals at least a few times a week. The recipes are absolutely delicious. My faves so far are the ribollita, salsa romesco, and the walnut sauce-well worth buying the book even just for these three recipes alone.

Editorial Review:

After years of research, scientists declared that the Mediterranean diet was the best one for overall good health-and the exciting news was that it tasted great, too.

Pleased, from a new vegetarian 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am a new vegetarian and have never been fond of cooking. I was a bit scared of getting into the vegetarian world with not knowing what to eat and not wanting to cook anything. So, I chose this book because it has recipes that have quick prep time and most recipes are for 1 or 2 servings. This is perfect for a person that lives by themselves, and you can always double the recipe for extra leftovers or for when you have friends over.

I'm not a student, just kitchen-inept. I enjoy that I am not overwhelmed by the recipes in this book and due to a fast pace life style, I actually find the time to cook these meals!

Important book for its time with a real message. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Food Revolution has a message for anyone who never thinks twice about the consequences of their food choices. It will even enlighten those who feel confident that they make the right food choices because they listen to their doctors. And its message is strong even to those who think vegetarians are prudes and are missing out on "the finer things." Robbins lays out the facts, using research articles as evidence, to criticize the food industry's claims and present the contradicting findings resulting from good sound science. Using this method he exposes the stark realities of the American diet that for the most part will get you to wonder why you have lived your life without ever wondering about such things as where your food comes from, how it was made, and what impact it has on the environment. Robbins explains to you the enormous impact that the single act of eating has on your body, the human population, and the planet itself. This book is huge in its scope and contains facts from hundreds of sources, and its rather objective delivery makes it a necessary read for anyone interested in studying diet, nutrition, disease, environmental protection, science, and agriculture. His sources are sometimes repetitive, be it the same person or organization, and as a result at these times his arguments lack clout. But these sources are solid and true, therefore not taking very much away from Robbins' message to America about the hazards of the current American diet.

Editorial Review:

John Robbins, the man who started the "food revolution" with the ground-breaking Diet for a New America, boldly posits that, collectively, our personal diet can save ourselves and the world. His latest book presents compelling new information regarding the fields of nutrition, heart disease and cancer, agribusiness, and bioengineering. It discusses the latest discoveries about the relationships between diet and longevity, aging, and vitality. Armed with powerful statistics, fascinating viewpoints, and incisive exposes, Robbins argues for adopting a vegetarian diet for personal well-being as well as for the well-being of the planet.

Editorial Review:

In her most comprehensive volume yet, Madhur Jaffrey draws on more than four decades of culinary adventures, travels, and experimentation for a diverse collection that both intrigues and delights the palate. Dishes from five continents touch on virtually all the world's best loved flavors, for a unsurpassed selection of vegetarian fare.

More than 650 recipes exemplify Madhur's unsurpassed ability to create simple, flavorful homecooking that is well within the reach of every cook. Extensive sections on Beans, Vegetables, Grains, and Dairy explore the myriad ways these staples are enjoyed worldwide. Each section opens with a detailed introduction; Madhur describes methods for preparation and storage, as well as different cooking techniques and their cultural origins. Throughout she balances appealing, uncomplicated dishes such as sumptuous omelets and rich polentas with less familiar ingredients such as green mangoes, pigeon peas, and spelt. Madhur demystifies the latter with clear-cut explanations so that incorporating new combinations and interesting flavors into everyday cooking becomes second nature. She also offers substantial sections on Soups, Salads, and Drinks, as well as Sauces and Other Flavorings, to help round out a meatless meal and add exciting new flavors to even the most easily prepared dishes. Finally, a complete glossary of ingredients and techniques clarifies some of the little-known elements of the world's cuisines so that even the uninitiated can bring the flavors of Asia, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and more to their tables.

Throughout this extensive collection, Madhur includes personal anecdotes and historical contexts that bring her recipes to life, whether she's remembering field of leeks she saw in the mountains of northern Greece or describing how corn-based dishes arrived in Indonesia through colonial trade. Committed vegetarians will rejoice at the wide variety of meatless fare she offers, and nonvegetarians will enjoy experimenting with Madhur's global flavorings. This highly readable resource promises to be a valuable addition to any cook's library, helping everyone make healthful ethnic foods a part of everyday cooking.

A "must-have" for vegetarian and omnivores 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

No one in our family is a vegetarian, but the recipes are so good that we prefer some of them as written, without meat (pancetta, sausage, prosciutto, etc) with which we usually add to "improve" vegetarian recpies. Risotto recipes are particularly outstanding! The picky, more carnivorous members who avoid anything green actually LOVE the risotto with spinach and herbs as well as the soups. They now eat their vegetables!

Editorial Review:

This uniquely accessible collection draws together the best vegetarian recipes of Italy-350 in all. 'Pasta and pizza may be Italy's most eye-catching exports, but it is the country's varied and sensible use of vegetables that provides the best inspiration for American cooks,' writes Jack Bishop. 'Asparagus spears coated with a little olive oil and roasted to intensify their flavor; thick slices of country bread grilled over an open fire and topped with diced tomatoes and shredded basil from the garden; or a fragrant stew with fennel and peas-Italians enjoy these dishes because of what they do contain, not what they don't.' Many of the recipes were gathered by Bishop during extensive travels throughout Italy. Some are family favorites, adapted from those of his Italian grandmother. All deliver perfect results with a minimum of effort. Serving suggestions for each recipe make planning vegetarian meals easy.
