Not a healthy vegetarian cookbook 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I agree completely with the people who gave this book a low rating. The book is heavy on dairy (milk and butter). I read on the WW blog that it was recommended - but I don't understand how that can be. If a person on WW ate from the recipes in this book, they would be on WW FOREVER! Can't even resell this book for what I paid for it.

I may try later to revamp some of the recipes to be more health conscious by substituting healthier ingredients.

Creative Combinations, poorly explained recipes 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I like the huge variety of recipes, it sparks lots of ideas. However I have found the recipes strangely off at times. For example, page 283 has a Rice Noodle stirfry, where they have you make a sauce, then they never tell you what to do with it. Now this is a pretty basic recipe, but still I found myself almost done cooking with an orphaned bowl of sauce, which I just dumped in. Another recipe for coconut soup has 6 cups of water to one can of coconut milk - its almost not even worth adding the can of coconut milk at this point...

Answer to a Mom's Prayer 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I was delighted to read about this cookbook in my local newspaper and ran out to buy a copy right away. My eleven year old daughter was recently diagnosed with diabetes, so this book about nutrition/healthy cooking is an answer to my prayers. In addition to the fun and great-tasting recipes with complete nutrition information, there are clear explanations about the type 1 and type 2 diabetes conditions and even some fun "non-food" projects. My daughter and I spent a weekend afternoon in the kitchen making Fruit Filled Quesadillas- messy, but fun!

Editorial Review:

Here are simple, fun, healthy recipes and activities for kids with diabetes that they can make themselves or with their parents.

Recipes and projects help kids understand the importance of food to their health. Includes:

  • Recipes that teach children about the link between diabetes and nutrition
  • Hints for parents on managing their children's nutrition
  • Creative projects to enrich children's connection to food

The best 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I own quite a bit of cookbooks, and already this is tattered from kitchen use. My husband and daughter love the desserts in this book. It takes a little extra time but the carrot cake is excellent. So is the Italian pot roast. I'm a tweaker when it comes to receipes, but I didn't with this book!

Loved it for years 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have been using this book for several years now. The lasagna recipe and oven baked fried chicken are wonderful. I have made so many of the recipes and they are all very good. Highly recommend.

Too many ingredients 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

When making any of these recipes, I found myself buying certain ingredients specially for one recipe. They can get expensive to make. The recipes themselves are not great.

Lots of Reading! 2 out of 5 stars.

This book has great suggestions for cooking healthier, however there is a lot of reading!

SAVE YOUR MONEY! 1 out of 5 stars.

Thank goodness I only paid a penny for this book. Ok, well the $3.99 to ship it made this book cost $4. I feel like Amazon should pay me $20 for the time I wasted even trying any recipes. I'm sorry but there is no other way to say it but, this book just sucks. It's a long list of ingredients many times, and the end result (along with your time spend preparing it) is never spectacular. I'd say, that several of the recipes I tried could even be called 'craptacular'! For all that effort to be met with disappointment (and family NOT enthused...read: wasted food!) really ticks me off. I'm a good, experienced cook so it's not like I'm not understanding the rocket science if you know what I mean! You can find any one of a handful of great books if you want fat free cooking. This, sadly, is NOT one of them. I also tried this author's fat free baking book and almost gagged on the three things I made. Just...don't go there. Run away, find another book! This one is awful!

Just in time for the first spring rain ... 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I have had the best time reading this book! I used it as a treat to bribe myself into doing other work.

I am personally prone to finding those plants considered to be weeds and providing a new home for them in my yard. I'm also prone to planting native herbs in my yard, since they are the most likely to survive the local summers and winters without my care -- Beautiful and tough as nails, who can resist that?

Roger, however, takes this a good bit further, into his personal experiences with using wild plants for food in anecdotes, stories and experiences.

My husband is next in line to read it. Upon hearing me snort and giggle with my nose in the book, he would ask what it was I was laughing about, and I'd read a portion aloud. It was great fun and I always recommend great fun. Well, I recommend it to my friends, anyway ...

And it now has a spot in my personal weed library! Definitely, definitely.

Weird and wonderful weeds 5 out of 5 stars.

Reviewed by Olivera Baumgartner-Jackson for Reader Views (10/06)

Every now and then one happens upon a book that turns out to be very different from what one expected, yet wonderful and charming beyond belief. This was the case with "Weed 'Em and Reap," written by Roger Welsch. Immediately after reading the introduction, I realized that this was not going to be a cookbook for foods from the wild or a book to help me identify them - which was what I expected. It is all of that - to a point - but much more than that. Welsch truly opens one's eyes in respect to the bounty all around us. His descriptions of "weeds" are poetic and very romantic at times. Who would have thought that somebody basically foraging for food would be amazed by the brilliant blue flowers of chicory plant? Welsch's approach to weeds and eating them is respectful and safe. He never fails to caution the reader - but also never scares him or her off. He teaches respect for nature and often suggests using common sense. There is nothing preachy or condescending in his writing. He sounds like somebody I'd love to have as a friend.

Some of my favorite chapters in the book involve digging up poke and buffalo gourd roots - and why you should not attempt that, educating the local weed inspector about the merits of different plants in the yard and making home-made wine from all kinds of fruit. Each of them will teach you a bunch of things that I am sure you did not know about before.

In spite of saying upfront in his introduction that his book is not a cookbook, Welsch provides a few wonderful recipes. Each of them is really simple, but if they taste anything like the greens I prepared following one of his recipes, they should taste spectacular.

Oftentimes funny, sometimes downright silly, Welsch's writings can be enjoyed by everybody. Even if you never decide to eat a "weed," I bet you will never look at the nature around you the same way. Just remember the quote from the very beginning of "Weed 'Em and Reap," written by Ella Wheeler Wilcox, "A weed is but an unloved flower."

Non-gluten delectabilities! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After going gluten free a year ago, I thought I'd never bake anything good again. But this book and its predecessor, The Gluten-free Gourmet, changed my mind! Because I'm also sugar free, baking is an extra large challenge. But these recipes along with xylitol sweetener have gotten me back in business. What a great find! Thanks, Bette!

Kudos to Bette Hagman! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Thanks to Bette Hagman's clearly written, informative cookbooks, it is very easy to enjoy a gluten/wheat free lifestyle. This book is not only power packed with excellent recipes, but with tips on maintaining a gluten free lifestyle.

It makes me think of the spiritual, "Free At Last." A modified version for the Hagman books could be "Wheat free at last, wheat free at last..."

Thank you, Bette Hagman!

Editorial Review:

Bette Hagman's first book, The Gluten-free Gourmet, brought good-tasting food back into the lives of the millions who are intolerant to the gluten in wheat, oats, barley, or rye, or who are allergic to wheat. Responding to a flood of requests for "more, more, more," she offers more than 265 additional gluten-free recipes for tasty meals. Now with a gourmet look, this book is as irresistible as ever for gluten-intolerant chefs and their families.

Great book but... 4 out of 5 stars.
44 of 45 people found this review helpful.

I just recieved this the other day and have yet to make any recipes from this cookbook. But I have now tried several of the WW cookbooks and they always have great recipes, so there is no doubt that I will find some more healthy ones in this book.

I love how each page has a main recipe on it and then they have built a whole day of eating around that one recipe. Sometimes, there are smaller typed recipes in the daily menu area on each page. For example, on one page, the main recipe is for Grilled Chicken Caesar salad. Then to the right of the recipe, they have built a whole day of meals around this recipe. They have suggested what to eat for breakfast (banana and cereal), a light meal (beans and franks, carrot/celery sticks, whole wheat roll, yogurt), the main meal (which includes the Chicken caesar salad, creamy brocolli soup--provides the recipe, a peach and Italian bread) and an evening snack (3 cups of plain popcorn).

This is perfect for someone who needs to follow a strict menu to stay on track. Not everyone has the self discipline to make their own healthy menus and stay within the WW guidelines, so this would work well for those people. And each recipe/daily menu is different so you don't have to worry about being bored and eating the same things over and over.

The only real complaints I have about this book is that it is outdated compared to the newer WW cookbooks. It doesn't have any of the point values in the book, so you need to use the WW calculator to figure the point values out for each recipe. And the other complaint that I have is the book does have a few pictures in it, but most of the pictures are very unappetizing. They look like they just threw the recipe together and didn't worry about presentation. The more recent WW cookbooks make the pictures look very yummy, unlike this one.

Also, we all know that not everyone can eat the same amount of calories and continue to lose weight, so its unclear as to who this cookbook is geared towards. Someone who needs to be eating 1600 calories and actively losing weight still or someone who is maintaining their goal weight and need to eat around 1200 calories per day.

This cookbook looks like its worth a try, even just for the recipes and not the daily menus. But it't not as nice as the newer cookbooks that WW has put out in the last few years.

Editorial Review:

One of the biggest challenges in weight loss and maintenance is planning new menus that keep you on a healthful food plan, and that are also varied and appealing. Now the experts at Weight Watchers serve up an entire year of delicious menus that will help readers enjoy the process as well. The book features a main dish recipe for every day of the year, and a full day's menu built around that recipe, plus complete nutritional counts and Weight Watchers Selection Information. Designed to give readers more freedom of choice, Weight Watchers New 365-Day Menu Cookbook will make healthful eating easier and tastier than ever.
