Good for those starting out in a low fat diet 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The book gives some good ideas of what you can do for low fat for those starting out. Advanced? It is handy to have the hints in hard copy but most of them I can find on the net.

I got it for husband who has a sweet tooth and a bad heart. He didn't like the recipes from it and he has loved other low fat baking goods that either he [the real baker in the family] or I have made. It had a large number of muffin recipes until I felt as if I was reading a muffin cookbook. That would be nice if either of us liked muffins.

The pie recipes sounded interesting but called for a crust made of fat free graham crackers which is not available in our area. The same with fat free buttermilk. You can't find it here and are not easy to make however the book provides no alternative such as a recipe for fat free graham cracker. That would have been really nice.

It has been stuck on the back self simply because the hints are handy to review otherwise I was very disappointed with the source.

Editorial Review:

Enjoy all your favorite goodies but with none of the guilt with these 130 low-fat and fat-free recipes. The results are scrumptious cakes, cookies, brownies, muffins, pies, and breads.

The Best I've Found, so far! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I don't have enough space in this forum to express my total appreciation for this book. I've had it for over a year and I've barely used a fraction of it's valuable ideas. The ones I have used, I've used over and over again! I'm sitting here right now thinking of making some bread. I can either grind the grain by hand or use the recomended grinder I discovered from the book! I'm pretty much all set! A Must Read!

Fantastic book 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This book is great - I am a pediatric occupational therapist and was looking for ideas for the children I work with who have feeding concerns. This book is geared to any child and is chock-full of information about what different fruits, veggies & meats contain and even have helpful "diaper warnings" for foods that might cause after-effects (e.g., beets). The foods look fantastic (I'd eat almost any of the recipes), and she even lists tips for how to use the recipes to make them into meals for the whole family. We often don't think about the fact that babies & young children should have food that tastes good, which actually helps them transition to "regular" foods more easily.

Editorial Review:

Learning to eat well and educating the palate are as important for kids as learning their abc's. In Naturally Delicious Meals for Baby, author Gerrie Hawes has created over 150 fabulous organic, easy-to-prepare recipes—ranging from the first taste of puree to tempting toddler meals—that will help parents give their babies the best possible nutritional start in life. Hawes also includes vital information on weaning babies and toddlers, such as: how to spot the signs that show babies are ready to wean; when to introduce certain foods; allergy indicators; ways to encourage good eating habits, and much more. Complete with comprehensive meal planners for each stage and reassuring hints and advice (did you know that fennel is a good remedy for colic?), Naturally Delicious Meals for Baby will show parents how to stimulate their babies' palates so they will develop a love for all kinds of healthy foods and great life-long eating habits.

The Best Weight-Loss Plan 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. Almost a year ago, my husband decided he needed to lose weight (his doctor had been telling him to do so for years; he was verging into diabetes despite being on Glucophage, Glucotrol, and Lipitor). My husband's one criterion was he wanted a diet that allowed him to eat frequently during the day because he didn't want to be hungry. Enter Heber's book!

Merely by increasing the number of vegetables and fruits that my husband ate, he crowded out the crap he'd been obliviously living on. He began to count calories because the results from merely eating more healthily a la Heber made him feel very positive. In six months, he lost sixty-five pounds. His cholesterol went from 220 (a number achieved with the help of those meds) to 125. He's kept the weight off five months now, but we are determined that he will be eating this way for life. We have a word in our household: Heberific. My husband's Park Avenue doctor phoned me and said: "I didn't recognize your husband from his numbers [meaning his blood test numbers]. They've never looked like this! You've added at least ten years to your husband's life, and really fifteen quality years. You are a hero!" I accepted the compliment because it's I who do most of the food preparation.

Now I go to the fruits-and-vegetable market almost every day. I too have made a game of tracking what color fruits and vegies my husband is eating (I composed a daily chart; I've noticed another reader said he did the same thing). I keep meaning to write Dr. Heber a thank-you letter but then I thought perhaps I should simply post my praise on Amazon.

I know Dr. Heber formulated this way of eating primarily to safeguard people from the major chronic diseases (heart disease, cancer) that are diet related, but this way of eating is fun and has had extraordinary results in my family. I've given this book to my parents (who are not overweight) and recommend it incessantly. I am not being hyperbolic when I say that five stars for this book isn't enough.

Editorial Review:

He shows you how to make food choices to restore, repair and rejuvenate your immune system, ward off illnesses, and prevent ageing and lose body fat at the same time. As Dr. Heber explains, it is the imbalance between our modern diet and the DNA laid down over 50,000 years ago that accounts for all of our major common diseases. This groundbreaking new work includes - * Self-Assessment questionnaires * A vitamin and supplement guide * Herbal remedies * Scores of easy-to-use recipes * Tips on travelling and dining on the DNA diet * Sample weekly menus * Helpful shopping lists The only book that teaches you how to eat specifically for your genetic makeup, What Color is Your Diet? is an extraordinary breakthrough for living a long life full of strength and vitality.

tasty health in a polluted world 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is probably the definitive work on how to start with whole grains and
make bread and other grain based foods. The author includes essential
details about how to store grains, how to care for cast iron utensils, how
to make sourdough and sprouts, etc. that you don't see in a lot of other
books. The writing style is concise and very clear. The recipes are
flexible allowing you to adjust and substitute ingredients. It is amazing
how quickly pan bread can be made from scratch. And now I can make a $5
loaf of artisan bread with less than $1 of ingredients, and if I were
grinding my own wheat, I could do it for less than fifty cents worth of
ingredients!

Editorial Review:

This is a cookbook, preparedness resource and survival manual all wrapped into one concise and thorough reference. It covers the acquisition and storage of wheat and other grains and legumes, the preparation of all of the basic foods from the whole grain to the finished product in the simplest and most foolproof manner possible. It includes Essene Bread, Pan Bread, Fry Bread, Sprouting, Sourdough, Food Combination, Baking, Bread Making, Gluten Meat Substitute, Pasta, Improvised Bread Making, Dumplings, Cast Iron Cookery, Salads, Biscuits and Pancakes. This is an essential resource for anyone who cooks with grains, anyone who wishes to prepare for natural disasters or other unexpected events and anyone who just wants to save a lot of money on their food bills.

I like the cut-a-ways 5 out of 5 stars.

I like the cut-a-ways so we can plan the whole day on one page. That has been the bigest help for me.

Excellent Guide 5 out of 5 stars.

Buying Month of Meals and its companion, the Betty Crocker Diabetes Cookbook, was a great way for my husband and me to learn more about diabetes. I liked the way the book was segmented so you can mix and match meal plans for breakfast, dinner, and supper by flipping the top, middle or bottom of a page. With 30 days of ideas, there is enough variety to keep a diet interesting. Sometimes we don't like a specific recipe, but we like the ingredients and use them in a way that still meets the book's intent. Excellent guide.

Month of Meals: Old-Time Favorites 3 out of 5 stars.

If I had not bought the prior Month of Meals it would have been a good cook book.
I had purchased the other two and in this one there were duplicate receipes and only a few new ones.
My recommendation would be; Purchase this one if you have not purchase one and two Month of Meals.

Better Homes & Gardens New Dieter's Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My husband and I lost a total of 100 pounds in 5 months by using the delicious recipes in this book. The food is tasty, easy to prepare, and satisfying. The variety of foods from the traditional to the more exotic or ethnic gives the range of choice often missing in "diet" books. I have purchased this book as a gift for several friends who have also found it enjoyable.

Excellent variety. 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

I rated this one five stars based on what I look for in diabetic/low-carb cookbooks (1) has to have complete nutritional information (I don't like just "exchanges" or just a carbohydrate range or just sugarfree...); (2) recipes I will make (a favorite is the Guiltless Brownies with cocoa and bananas) that my family won't bypass or that require too many shopping trips to specialty stores; and (3) variety (I don't need another book telling me a crustless pie with sugarfree pudding or tying to just substitute a sweetener for sugar) -- this one has a variety of menus, lots of different dishes, real food ingredients and a wide range of carbohydrate counts instead of assuming all diabetics are using certain ranges or exchanges or avoiding the same foods. Realistic menus.

How sweet it isn't. 3 out of 5 stars.

This book was full of helpful recipes for my aunt who was recently diagnosed with diabetes. She has always been a huge fan of pasta and chicken so this book helped her out showing her how she can have the food she wants. Having diabetes strips your freedom to eat what you want and cook books like this give diabetics a choice of recipes rather than a bag of rabbit food.
