Cute book, not very helpful 2 out of 5 stars.
78 of 83 people found this review helpful.

The folksy advice and complicated concoctions in this book seem to be more fantasy than reality. They call for more ingredients than you'd find in any grocery store, and in order to make these juicy refreshments, you have to have a wide variety of juices on hand. Not to mention a dozen appliances for blending, chopping, squeezing and processing the ingredients they way the book describes.

I was hoping for something that said "juice 2 apples, a stalk of celery and a bannana." But this book says something like, "blend 1.5 oz. apple juice, 3/4 oz. of celery juice, and 3/4 oz of banana juice." It doesn't suggest how much of each fruit you need on hand to make the desired amount. It doesn't even focus on Juicing, which is why I bought it.

Looks cute on the bookshelf, and that's where it will stay. UN-USED.

2 Green Drinks and Juices perday will make your day 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a wonderful collection of healing
drinks and energizing fuel for the body.
It specifically outlines drinks for each particular
ailment and juice recipes to remedy the problem.
Why pop a pill you cannot digest like eating a rock
when you can enjoy a fresh homemade juice drink to
awaken your soul and tantalize your tastebuds.
This is an excellent book which I have recommended
to several people who juice for their health and
enjoyment. Enjoy life....a pill is no fun.

Editorial Review:

If you're a Weight Watcher, this collection of 500 recipes in a handy loose-leaf binder could put you in the fast lane on the road to success. This cookbook is designed for Weight Watchers' 1•2•3 Success program: points are assigned to foods based on fat, fiber, and calories, and your daily point allowance is based on your current weight. So you can eat what you want, as long as you don't go over your allotted points. The better your food choices, the more you can eat before you run out of points.

Recipes are varied and cover the whole gamut: sauces; breads; soups; meat, chicken, fish, and vegetarian entrees; pasta; vegetable, grain, and potato side dishes; and, of course, desserts. The recipes are more healthful but not drastically different from foods you and your family enjoy now. Many are familiar comfort foods, such as Pizza, Oven "Fried" Chicken, Beef Stew, Tuna Noodle Casserole, Chocolate Layer Cake, and Cheesecake. Internationally inspired favorites include Dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), Orange-Flavored Fajitas, Moo Shu Chicken, Tandoori Haddock, and Senegalese Peanut Soup. The nutritional breakdown for each recipe is more complete than in most cookbooks, and includes calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrate, fiber, protein, calcium, and Weight Watchers' points. --Joan Price

Editorial Review:

The first cookbook from best-selling author Jonny Bowden!

Jonny Bowden's The Healthiest Meals on Earth contains recipes for more than sixty dishes and drinks that use nutritious and healthy cooking methods. Forty of these dishes will combine to create ten different "poly-meals", specially crafted meals that contain key nutrients found to promote long-term health. They include Sweet and Thai Spicy Shrimp and Fruits, Persian Chicken with Autumnal Accompaniments, and the "iron booster" of Tender Calf's Liver and Sweet Beets. A "Healthiest Holiday Meal" features Citrus Stuffed Turkey, Zippy Fruit Salsa, and Sweet Potato Pie. The poly-meals are designed to be eaten three-to-five times a week.

Another ten recipes are not part of the poly-meal structure; instead they are one-pot meals that include Slow-Cooker Chicken Curry, Miso Bean Soup, and Venison Stew. A chapter on drinks will include nutritious smoothies, so-called "green drinks", and others. Jonny will provide healthy cooking tips throughout the book, as well as an analysis of the foods in each recipe. Side dishes, such as Cold Strawberry Soup and Veggie Slaw with Flax Oil, and desserts, such as Raw Chocolate Fondue, are also featured.

This book pairs well with Bowden's successful 150 Healthiest Foods, and can even be used as a companion cookbook.

Do you love breads, cakes, pies, cookies, and other wheat products but can't eat them because you are allergic to wheat or sensitive to gluten? Perhaps you avoid wheat because you are concerned about your weight and need to cut down on carbohydrates. If so, the solution for you is coconut flour. Coconut flour is a delicious, healthy alternative to wheat. It is high in fiber, low in digestible carbohydrate, and a good source of protein. It contains no gluten so it is ideal for those with celiac disease. Coconut flour can be used to make a variety of delicious baked goods, snacks, desserts, and main dishes. It is the only flour used in most of the recipes in this book. These recipes are so delicious that you won't be able to tell that they aren't made with wheat. If you like foods such as German chocolate cake, apple pie, blueberry muffins, cheese crackers, and chicken pot pie, but don't want the wheat; you will love the recipes in this book! These recipes are designed with your health in mind. Every recipe is completely free of wheat, gluten, soy, trans fats, and artificial sweeteners. Coconut is naturally low in carbohydrate and recipes include both regular and reduced sugar versions. Coconut flour provides many health benefits. It can improve digestion, help regulate blood sugar, protect against diabetes, help prevent heart disease and cancer, and aid in weight loss.

Excelling athletes on raw food diet 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In response to people not sure about eating this kind of diet -

I would look at the results Tim Van Orden at running [...] is getting. He is beating world elite skyscraping running and endurance athletes after having only been on an e-x-ceptionally minimally raw food diet for 2 years, having only been running for two years and is a late age in running circles of 38. Brendan Brazier also is interesting.

Also, Victoria Boutenko's theory on how greens (organic - as startling difference in her book Green Smoothie between mostly 1,480mg compared to 1 to 8mg of any standard vitamin or mineral per 100g greens) exceed the USDA requirements on almost all counts, the exception being fibre and how this diet does not cause a-n-y of the myriad human illnesses in chimpanzees, who are used to test blood samples in animal testing for human medicine, hearts and lungs etc. and who share 99.4% the same gene sequence as humans.

Editorial Review:

Medical researchers have found that a high-fat, high-sugar diet, combined with environmental pollutants and stress, can lead to a buildup of toxins in the body collectively known as chronic degenerative disease. Here holistic physician Gabriel Cousens provides a dietary regimen that may help reverse this process by introducing whole, natural, organic, and raw foods into the diet. These restorative “live” foods can reverse chronic disease and bring back health and vitality. This eclectic cookbook shares 250 delicious vegan recipes from chefs at the Tree of Life Cafe. Dishes include Avocado Salad with Rosemary, Green Dragon Broccoli, Raw-violis, Lavender Milk, and Carob Coconut Cream Eclairs. International entrees, juices, and aromatherapeutic remedies are also featured.

My favorite from Moosewood! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The recipes in "Low-Fat Favorites" aren't time-consuming to prepare like the classic Moosewood recipes, making them more weeknight friendly. There are many "tricks" to make a dish seem creamy or cheesy without adding any cream or cheese -- all satisfaction, no fat!

I made Roasted Vegetables Caribbean Style for a potluck the other night to rave reviews. It was easy to prepare and SO good (page 227).

The "Menu Suggestions" feature and the indication of time the recipe takes to prepare are great for planning family dinners or dinner parties, and are included with each recipe.

Editorial Review:

The first Moosewood Cookbook--loved for its cozy, comforting food--mused oil, eggs, and dairy products so lavishly that it was extensively revised in 1992 to fit our changing diet. Now, the Moosewood Collective takes an even more extreme step: recipes in Moosewood Restaurant Low-Fat Favorites are so intentionally healthful that they put the word right on the cover of this chubby book filled with lean recipes (many dishes get the fat down to a modest 16-17% of their total calories). Still, the 280-plus recipes offer the bold, pan-ethnic flavors that have won the Moosewood Collective cookbooks so many fans.

I'm head over heels! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

In Baking with Agave Nectar Ania Catalano presents over 100 recipes for using this intense sweetener, many of which are designed to be healthy in other ways, too. These recipes use whole grains, for example---pie crusts often involve oat flour, barley flour, whole wheat pastry flour, etc. Fruit substitutes for butter in some recipes, providing moisture and structure to cupcakes and the like. While some recipes use dairy (such as a banana cream pie that has whipped cream folded into a custard), others are vegan, such as a coconut custard pie made with tofu, of all things.

Ms. Catalano makes the assumption that if you're switching to agave, you're doing it because you want to be healthier in general. What amazes me, however, is the fact that she manages to do this without compromising the deliciousness of her recipes. In fact, these recipes are so utterly amazing that I wouldn't hesitate to make something from this book instead of a similar recipe from a non-healthy book, even if I weren't trying to be healthy in my eating.

The directions in this book are easy to follow, and the recipes are clear and easy to read. he only problem I encountered at all is one that's tough to avoid when dealing with whole grains: some baked goods lack a certain amount of structural integrity. One pie crust we made tended to fall apart pretty easily. Similarly, the chocolate chip cookies we made from this book tended to fall apart. However, I can virtually guarantee that once you taste a bite of either, you simply won't care about structure!

The coconut custard pie was the dish that most amazed me. The idea of a coconut custard pie based on tofu instead of dairy seemed dubious at best. Yet it was SO delicious that I could hardly stop eating it.

The banana daiquiri cupcakes were a similar shock. We thought they came out so well that we risked bringing them to a friend's retirement-from-the-army picnic. The cupcakes were so good that I don't think a single person guessed they were healthy, and we got a ton of compliments on them. They disappeared VERY quickly.

If you're looking for a way to eat more healthfully but can't give up your sweets, I highly recommend Ania Catalano's Baking with Agave Nectar. You might not want to go back to regular desserts by the time you're done!

Editorial Review:

Even before its health benefits were being touted on Oprah's daytime show, agave nectar was finding fans among dessert lovers seeking to reduce or eliminate processed sugar in their diets. In BAKING WITH AGAVE NECTAR, natural foods chef Ania Catalano shows how to creatively integrate this up-and-coming natural sugar substitute into every sweet tooth's repertoire through a variety of delectable recipes. From breakfast goodies (Pumpkin Muffins, Stuffed French Toast) to cookies (Chewy Double Chocolate Meringue) to desserts (Bread Pudding Soufflés with Bourbon Sauce, Pear Frangipane Tart), Catalano makes agave nectar accessible and appealing to health-conscious bakers of all levels.

Nice pictorial intro to bento, but not too practical 4 out of 5 stars.
56 of 58 people found this review helpful.

I run two food blogs, one focused mainly on Japanese cooking, the other just on bento lunches. (I'm Japanese but live outside of Japan.) I finally got around to taking a look at this book.

The pros: it's a nice visual introduction to fairly traditional bento lunch boxes. (Keep in mind that 'bento' can be something other than a portable lunch.) The presentation is very attractive.

The cons: even as someone familiar with the ingredients and cooking methods I thought that this book looked rather intimidating, because just about every single recipe calls for ingredients that are only available from Japanese groceries. Actually quite a lot of the recipes call for ingredientat that would be very hard to get outside of Japan. Clearly this is a translation of a Japanese bento book, and no consideration is given at all to how available certain ingredients may be or not. (This is something I always try to keep in mind on my sites.)

The presentation feels just a bit outdated to me. Current bento books in Japan have a much simpler, modern feel. The instructions are also rather abbreviated, as if the intended audience is the fairly experienced Japanese cook (which it probably was when it was written originally).

So, I think for most people who don't live in Japan this would be a nice picture book to have around, perhaps as inspiration and eye candy, but perhaps not too useful for everyday lunch making for a typical American.

Editorial Review:

Organic food is synonymous with premium quality, the deepest, richest taste, conscientious farming, and optimum health. It’s what we need to feed our kids, what we deserve to feed ourselves. And no one is doing more to popularize organic food that Myra Goodman, a mother, a creative cook, and most significantly, co-owner of Earthbound Farm, the world’s largest grower and purveyor of organic produce.

In Food to Live By, a dazzling full-color cookbook, Myra Goodman offers an utterly appealing, new casual style of cooking based on using the best ingredients, organic or otherwise. The dishes are irresistible: Sweet Corn Chowder. Spinach, Feta and Mushroom Quiche. Foggy Day Chili. Merlot-Braised Short Ribs with Cipollini Onions. Spicy Chicken Lettuce Wraps. Ginger Lime Salmon. Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Spiced Orange Sauce. Blue Cheese Smashed Potatoes. Coconut Lemongrass Sorbet. Cherry Panna Cotta. Farm Stand Carrot Cake. Plus, throughout are Farm-Fresh Ingredient boxes—on sorrel, corn, asparagus, artichokes— cooking and shopping tips, and health notes.

Before Myra and her husband, Drew, founded Earthbound Farm, they tended a small organic raspberry patch in Carmel, California—and Myra baked (and sold) amazing Raspberry Corn Muffins, plus jams, and more. Then Earthbound grew to offer organic lettuce mixes to local restaurants, and eventually the rest of the country. When The Organic Kitchen at Earthbound Farm opened, it was yet another venue for Myra, and the café’s chefs, to share delicious recipes and ideas. Now Food to Live By brings this organic revolution to everyone who cares about what they eat.
