Editorial Review:

The Sugar Busters! diet lets you eat just about anything except certain carbohydrates, including refined sugars, red and white potatoes, corn, white rice, highly processed grains, beets, and carrots. This cookbook offers a variety of Sugar Busters!- acceptable recipes, averaging about 40 percent "correct" carbohydrates, 30 percent protein, and 30 percent fat. These recipes won't keep you in the kitchen all day, though most aren't produced in a flash, either. Breakfasts are predominantly egg dishes. Lunches include Stir-Fried Ginger Chicken, Chesapeake Crab Cakes, Whole-Wheat Spaghetti with Olive-Tomato Sauce, Fourth of July Macaroni Salad (colorful with red onions, tomatoes, green bell peppers, and onions), and Bayou Spicy Boiled Shrimp. Dinner entrées emphasize meat, fish, and poultry, with some regional and international dishes. The collection also includes separate recipe sections for vegetables, appetizers, salad dressings, sauces, and holiday dishes.

Many recipes are high in fat, especially saturated fat, such as Green Chilies Cheese Casserole, which uses six large eggs and four cups of grated cheese to eight ounces of green chilies. No nutritional breakdown is provided, so if you're trying to keep your fat intake to 30 percent, you'll have to guess. The authors suggest finishing the meal with "dessert of a simple green salad coated with a subtle olive oil and milk herb dressing or a few bites of cheese" or "a few nuts." If those don't hit the spot, there's a choice of seven dessert recipes, including a high-saturated-fat vanilla ice cream made with six egg yolks, a quart of whole milk, a quart of cream, and a cup of artificial sweetener.

Editorial Review:

For years nutritionists and health practitioners have urged North Americans to eat more fruits and vegetables. Why? Because these foods are low in fat, and are important sources of essential vitamins, minerals and fiber. Yet many of us -- even the most health conscious -- still don't consume the recommended 5 to 10 servings a day.
So what's the solution? For some people, the answer lies in vitamin and herbal supplements, both of which have enjoyed explosive sales growth over the past decade. But recent research suggests that whole, natural foods are still the best source of nutrients. And there's no easier or more effective way to add fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet than by juicing them.
Now, with The Juicing Bible, there's a new and comprehensive source of information for anyone who wants to explore the health benefits of juicing. Here you'll find a fully illustrated reference documenting the nutritive values and healing properties of over 100 fruits, vegetables and herbs. There's also a special section that addresses 60 common health conditions -- with prescriptive advice for using specific juices, as well as beneficial dietary and lifestyle changes. And, of course, there are the juicing recipes themselves -- over 150 of them, including flavourful juices (sample a Crimson Cleanser or Beta Blast), smoothies (try the Pump It Up or Cool Down), tonics, bitters, coffee substitutes and healing teas.
With helpful sidebars, health tips and preparation techn

Editorial Review:

For celiacs and others unable to eat wheat, it’s not just the dessert tray that’s forbidden: hearty staples like bread and pizza are also off limits. Now, this exciting cookbook allows allergy sufferers to indulge in a wide variety of baked goods, all delicious and all gluten-free. Featured are more than 100 recipes, including homey treats like biscuits and blueberry muffins; chocolate chip and other cookie jar classics; old-fashioned favorites such as eclairs, pie crust, and lemon squares; artisan style breads; and more than 20 cakes, from a simple vanilla layer cake to a decadent German chocolate cake. A thorough grounding in classic baking techniques, as well as detailed instructions in how to buy, mix, and measure gluten-free flours, ensure success for even novice gluten-free bakers. Rounding out the book is a pertinent discussion on how readers can incorporate baking into busy schedules, and why it is so important for emotional, as well as physical, well-being.

Editorial Review:

Roughly 6 to 8 million people in the United States alone are afflicted with fibromyalgia. A widespread muscular-skeletal syndrome, fibromyalgia touches people of all ages, male and female, as an unrelieved aching and burning pain, often accompanied by fatigue, that leaves its victims feeling exhausted.

Fibromyalgia inflects terrible wounds that leave no scars, and it is very difficult to treat. While drugs and pain suppressants are available, healthy food alternatives, including herbs and other natural foods, also help in combating the pain and exhaustion associated with the syndrome.

The Fibromyalgia Cookbook is designed to help those who suffer from this affliction to find relief from their discomfort. Focusing on natural foods and herbs, the authors emphasize pure foods with no additives, the lowest levels of toxins, and the greatest amount of nutritional value. The rules are few and basic: No red meat. No green peppers. No eggplant. Avoid heavy, starchy foods. The diet is low in sodium and low in fat, with no processed sugars. (Natural sweeteners such as honey and fruit are used.) No white flour (spelt flour and rice pasta are good substitutes). Soy butter, virgin olive oil, and flaxseed oil are suggested for salads. Many other satisfying possibilities are provided.

An introduction by Dr. Alison Bested explains the nature of fibromyalgia and the role of diet in finding relief from its symptoms. A glossary explains the strengths and dangers of specific foods. The 124 delicious recipes are divided into Soups, Salads, Veggies, Fibro-Fish Dishes, Dressings, Sauces and Dips, Fruit, Rice and Pasta, and Bread. COOKING; HEALTH 6” X 8”, 172 PAGES PAPERBACK

Don't be afraid of the bread 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

For years I have been intimidated by bread - previous attempts have been disasterous: I have baked loaves so dense they have their own gravitational field, or a bread-like substance somewhat akin to crackers lies in the bread pan. I had almost given up on it, until a friend handed me this book and said, "Don't be afraid of the bread - try this."

The recipies are simple, and the instructions are idiot-proof with diagrams on how to mix, knead and shape the dough. My first tenative attempts were not bad - certainly I have much more to learn and to tinker with, but Brown's clear instructions make the process remarkably easy. In addition to the "idiot-proofing" of bread making, the book has a wide variety of recipes for all kinds of bread: pastries, muffins, rolls, even dessert breads. It is not too much of a stretch to claim that for most of us, there is no need for any other books about making bread if you own _The Tassajara Bread Book_. If I can be successful using it, anybody can - therefore I strongly recommend it to anyone struggling with breadmaking.

Editorial Review:

Good bread needs more than just flower and water, milk, or eggs. It requires nurturing and care. In this twenty-fifth anniversary edition of the international best-seller that started a generation of Americans baking, Ed Brown shows how to make—and enjoy—breads, pastries, muffins, and desserts for today's sophisticated palates. And in a new afterword, he reflects on the widespread influence of the book and offers five new recipes.

Editorial Review:

At 278 pounds, Susan Maria Leach couldn't lie in bed without gasping for air, wasn't able to fit into a restaurant booth, and could barely buckle the belt in an airplane seat. It would have been easier to allow life to pass her by than to continue fighting her weight problem, but she made the difficult decision to take back control. In 2001, Susan underwent gastric bypass surgery and started on a journey that would not only cut her body weight in half but would change her life.

Before & After is both a memoir and a cookbook—an intimate account of Leach's own transformation as well as a guide for those who have undergone or are considering the procedure. As Leach has learned in the six years since her operation, weight-loss surgery is not an event with a finish line or a goal weight—it is the beginning of a new way of life.

This edition of Before & After has been updated with all that Leach has learned on her post-op journey. It includes a foreword by Leach's surgeon, advice from a nutritionist, answers to more frequently asked questions about weight-loss surgery, a whole chapter on meal plans for different post-operative stages, suggested menus for early food stages, additional questions and answers affecting longer-term post-ops, and new information about products that have entered the marketplace.

Most notably, this edition showcases a wealth of new recipes that utilize the latest in light and healthy ingredients for smart and savory results, including everything from Asian Meatballs with Peanut Sauce and Turkey Tenderloin with Apple Chipotle Chutney to sugar-free Pistachio Gelato and Lemon Almond Sponge Cake. Each recipe makes about four servings, but includes a measured serving for WLS people along with a calorie/carb/fat/protein count. Leach has recipes for every step of the way, from tastes-like-the-real-thing milk shakes for those first post-op days to an entire Thanksgiving menu.

Before & After is a journal of Leach's own inspirational story, where she shares her ups and downs, her tips and techniques, but mostly it's a book of hope for anyone who has a serious weight problem.

good tackle 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I've had this book for a few years and regularly refer to it. After reading the reviews I decided to post.

First of all, I think this book would be difficult to swallow if you don't have raw food experience. Primarily because this book is about adjusting the dials. Most of us have little knowledge of how our own unique bodies function, or what's required to funciton optimally. One may have a lot of knowledge about the body, but experience trumps info. Apply what you know to your own body and see how much it bears out in experience. It is then we realize that much of our knowledge is theoretical, no matter how sound, and doesn't necessarily bear out in reality.

This book, then, is a manual for the experience of one's own body and is based on decades of experience, study and practice with hundreds of people. The information is astoundingly refined. If you are just begining raw not only will the information be too complex, it won't be all that relevant - even though it's good. It's important to have refined information when you need refined information and to have more general information when you need that.

I say take what's useful and stay raw. Keep the book as a resource. Don't make up your mind in one or two reads. You'll come back again and again and gain new insight or new persepctive. This book will grow with you.

On a personal note: I often hear or read comments about Dr. Cousens' arrogance or that he's condescending. I'm not a "fan" but I do respect his work. He has an educational background that is astounding, a spiritual background that is shockingly diverse, feeds people, houses people, heals people, educates people and is utterly commited to helping save our planet. Dr. Cousens couldn't be self-serving or self-absorbed - or he wouldn't be willing/able to do the huge amount of work he does, tirelessy, for others. (there are MUCH easier ways to stroke one's ego) I think it's important to view him in the context of his work and his life to gain an understanding of his language and tone. Plus, he's human. Just please don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. This really is a great book.

One Pot Meals 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Practical and easy to fix meals. Good ideas for meals using every day food items.

You don't need to have Diabetes to love this book. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is my favorite new cookbook in 20 years. Now, to be totally fair, I'm not much of a cookbook kind of gal. I have a handful of family recipes I usually rotate through without having them written down, and I never cared much for cooking or eating in the first place. I have spent the last two months, though, trying out a large sampling of the recipes in this book, and the whole family loves them. I really like one-pot-meals because I get flustered trying to time too many different pots and pans at once, with a pesky toddler getting into the clean dishes, and older kids asking for help with homework. These recipes are clear and easy and extremely delicious. I can get them done in a very reasonable amount of time. The flavors, variety, and ease of preparation can't be beat. And I love the nutritional breakdown; easy to use, even for those of us new to the nutritional needs of a type I diabetic.

Editorial Review:
