Who would have guessed the sweet potato was so versatile! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a pure joy to read, and covers an amazing array of culinary styles. The recipes offered range from the classic sweet potato pie to an asian stir-fry that would delight any foodie.

What a variety! 5 out of 5 stars.

I was pretty surprised when I got this book with the variety of recipes. There are recipes for everything from beverages to breads to soups to main and side dishes to desserts. Sweet potato drinks? The recipes range from somewhat basic, standard-type to side dishes to the very exotic with a section of recipes from around the world. Some of the recipes use canned sweet potato, which is nice if you are looking to save a little time. This book seems to have enough variety that there is something in here to please everyone!

Editorial Review:

Anyone who thinks that they could never give up meat will find true enlightenment in The Vegetarian Meat and Potatoes Cookbook. Eating vegetarian does not mean giving up hearty, filling, and, most importantly, deliciously satisfying food. Vegetarian cuisine is not often associated with indulgence, but in this book food writer, chef, and cooking instructor Robin Robertson provides recipes for hearty, soul-satisfying--yet surprisingly elegant--dishes that will entice vegetarians and nonvegetarians alike. Hoisin Eggplant Balls are a rich and flavorful appetizer, replacing that old standby, the chafing dish of little meatballs. In Compari-Scented Vegetable Stew with Fennel and Orange Zest, cured olives and chickpeas provide a substantial backdrop for a heavenly mingling of the more delicate flavors, resulting in an intense and sophisticated entrée. Ginger-Sesame-Glazed Portobello Steaks over Wasabi Mashers relies on an aromatic marinade to add complexity to these "meaty" mushrooms. Familiar comfort foods are also well represented: Mushroom Barley Soup, Flaky Potpie, Layered Vegetable Lasagne, and more. Even the most elegant recipes in the book are surprisingly easy to prepare, and each offers the many advantages of a vegetarian diet without depriving anyone of their beloved indulgences. --Robin Donovan

Editorial Review:

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the potato was berated, feared, and loathed. It was blamed for everything from population explosions to population implosions, not to mention social upheaval and financial despair. Yet now, with the luxury of hindsight, Larry Zuckerman regards the potato as a saving grace for Western civilization, a crop that protected populations from starvation, encouraged self-sufficiency, and improved the lives of ordinary people. The potato's roller-coaster journey from dreary boiled peasant food into the most widely consumed vegetable on the planet is chronicled in this refreshing history lesson. The Potato goes way beyond the usual scope of spud history, which commonly focuses on the Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s. Although this disaster is a key event in the book, the potato's broader influence in the Western world was far more complex--changing the shape of agrarian societies, triggering world emigration, and even influencing social-welfare reforms. Snippets from journals, newspaper editorials, and government documents make this a convincing and fascinating glimpse of four centuries' worth of a vegetable to which we normally wouldn't give a second thought. --Naomi Gesinger

Editorial Review:

Sara Moulton is a very, very busy woman: Food Network host and personality, executive chef for Gourmet magazine, food editor for Good Morning America, and the mother of two children. Now add to that author of her first cookbook Sara Moulton Cooks at Home, in which Moulton delivers easy-to-prepare recipes as well as plenty of timesaving tips. If you wonder where Moulton draws her inspiration from, this book is all about family, including her extended family of friends and professional associates. Her recipe introductions read like an autobiography. She shows how it is done, and then she challenges the reader to do much the same with his or her own family of recipes. Moulton's 200-some recipes break down into standard sections such as hors d'oeuvres, soups, salads, meat, pasta, and so on. But she also pays homage to vegetarian main courses, light lunches, and breakfast and brunch. Look for Gingery Chicken Broth with Wonton Ravioli, Blasted Chicken (it's about roasting at high temperature), Sautéed Pork Loin with Mustard and Grapes, Roasted Salmon with Warm Lentil Salad, Andrea's Blackberry Crumble, and her own daughter's contribution, Ruthie's Chocolate French Toast with Raspberry Sauce. Sara Moulton Cooks at Home is about real food for real people. Sometimes it's homey, sometimes it's homely, and sometimes it puts on a string of pearls. --Schuyler Ingle

Too Complicated 3 out of 5 stars.

All the recipes are pretty advanced (and expensive). I'd like to see more easy dishes that don't take 5 hours to prepare and $100 per oven.

The Outdoor Dutch Oven Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.

This is well organized and appealing book for outdoor cooker. If you have cast iron dutch oven, you have to have this one.

Not just for outdoor cooking! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book contains fabulous recipes that can be made at home as well without using a Dutch oven. It is filled with ideas that are simple and fast to prepare with easily obtained ingredients. The author uses recipes that have been tried and refined by people whose business it is to entertain and please hungry folks with delicious food. These recipes are a notch above most one-pot recipes I have encountered. I purchased one as a gift for my outdoor-loving friends and ended up ordering one for my home as well.

Creative Ideas 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

One potato is about 100 calories and is a good source of Vitamin C. While it is a fat-free food to start with, who can resist butter and sour cream?

Stephanie Ashcraft loves to create the 101 Things to Do With A ...cookbooks and she is a highly creative cook who knows how to create delicious recipes. She has a bachelor's degree in family science. She has been teaching cooking classes since 1998.

In this book, she also includes helpful hints for buying potatoes and gives the basic potatoes and their uses. You might want to choose a russet potato for hash browns or a waxy potato in salads. She gives information on how to select potatoes and this is great information for all your potato recipes.

Recipes You might Enjoy:

Cheddar Potato Soup
Easy Chicken Pot Pie
Beef and Scalloped Potatoes
Chili Cheese Fries - only three ingredients
Baked Oven Fries
Coconut Chocolate Bars - made with mashed potatoes, who knew?
Chocolate Chip Banana Spice Bread

Delicious recipes and this series is a real hit with cooks who need easy recipes for their families. I can also recommend the cakes in the 101 Things to Do with a Cake Mix and the casseroles in 101 Things To Do with a Slow Cooker.

Editorial Review:

The potato has become so familiar to everyone today - it is the uncontested star on the menu of chefs both great and small - that we tend to forget its history. The potato has survived wars, famines, political intrigue and is certainly the modern-day success story of the food industry.

With its origins in the Andes, the potato was introduced to 16th century Europe by the Spanish and this beautifully illustrated book tell the fascinating story of this nutritious and delicious vegetable before presenting a portrait of 180 different types; from British Queen, first grown in Scotland, to la Ratte, made famous by Joel Robuchon.

Then fifty-three potato-loving chefs enable the reader to discover or rediscover the variety of ways the world's most popular tuber can be enjoyed. Feran Adria's recipe in his inimitable original style is for Potato Puree with Vanilla Sugar; Heston Blumenthal reveals the secret of his perfect Chunky Chips; Thomas Keller presents a Spring Vegetable Salad; Jean-Georges Vongerichten - or Vong to his followers - offers a slowly cooked sable fish, potato noodles with creme fraiche, vodka and caviar and Charlie Trotter amazes with his Russian banana fingerling, New York Red Bliss and Desiree potatoes, a kumomoto oyster emulsion and Inranian Osetra caviar.

Very tasty recipes 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I recently purchased a set of waterless cookware and was disappointed by the limited accompanying recipes. I was delighted to find "Healthy Meat & Potatoes" by Charles Knight, and even more delighted once I received it.

The recipes are surprisingly easy, the ingredients healthy, and the tips on using waterless cookware invaluable. I also like to cook with wine, and was excited to find wine an ingredient in some of the more gourmet recipes.

Overall, this book has already become one of the favorites in my collection and I'd recommend it to anyone with waterless cookware who is searching for information on how to get the best use out it, or anyone who wants to eat healthy and enjoy doing it.

Editorial Review:

Hundreds of thousands of home cooks use waterless/greaseless cookware because it makes cooking healthy, hearty food amazingly easy. And Healthy Meat and Potatoes shows readers how to use this revolutionary cookware to make all kinds of delicious, nutritious dishes. From all-American favorites to mouthwatering ethnic delights, readers will learn how to cook scrumptious meals without losing the flavor and nutritional qualities that traditional cooking methods can take away. In addition to the wide range of original recipes, the book also includes hints, tips, and valuable information for the health-and taste-conscious cook.

Trying to clog your family's arteries? This cookbook is for you! 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Having grown up around many Mormon families, I was excited to receive this cookbook and try out some of the recipes at our neighborhood potlucks. The book itself is beautiful, but the recipes are so unhealthy that it would be irresponsible to feed these finished dishes to families and friends. It's easy to make something fattening and unhealthy - which describes nearly everything in this cookbook - and I was hoping that the recipes would at least have been modified to make them healthier for today's lifestyles. I'm not a health food fanatic, and appreciate a fattening meal here and there, but this book is over-the-top in the "what not to eat" category. For me, there isn't much in this cookbook that sounds like it would be worth the trouble making.

Editorial Review:

The Essential Mormon Cookbook is a time-honored collection of recipes not found in standard cookbooks- family favorites passed down from generation to generation, traditional potluck dishes served at Church gatherings, and other gifts from the kitchen shared by neighbors and friends. This is the perfect source for these hard-to-find recipes you remember from your childhood, such as Christmas Morning Casserole, Pot Roast with Gravy, and Fresh Peach Cobbler. Also included are recipes to feed a crowd, compassionate service casseroles, and a conference-weekend brunch. More than 200 recipes, gathered from four generations of family cooks, are divided by seasons and event in this unique collection of Mormon comfort food.
