Editorial Review:

Everyone loves potatoes. This book transports cooks beyond the usual side dishes and introduces them to the secrets and specialties of great chefs and cooks the world over. Finamore shows how to prepare spectacularly simple appetizers, including dips, chips, and showstopping cocktail potatoes made from a few ordinary ingredients.
He presents dozens of soups and salads, including rich Summer Vichyssoise and Herb Garden Potato Salad. There are more than fifty main-dish possibilities, such as Sunday Lamb with Proper Roast Potatoes and Chicken Stuffed with Potatoes and Shiitake Mushrooms — not to mention a sophisticated rendition of Shepherd's Pie. The potato turns up as the hidden ingredient in such breads as Potato Cheddar Bread with Chives and in such desserts as moist Farmhouse Chocolate Cake.
Finamore shows how to master crisp steak fries, silky mashes,
and sumptuous gratins. A bonus feature of the book is the sweet potato,
in dishes from a delightfully nostalgic Baked Sweet Potatoes with Marshmallow to an urbane Semifreddo with Chocolate Sauce.

This was not the book worth for the money. Some of the recipes were pretty good, but I was expecting different types of potatoes and more unique types of recipes.

Sara Moulton is a professional chef by training and a gifted on-air teacher with a warm and winning style. On Cooking Live, she deftly answered viewers’ questions while juggling tricky cooking maneuvers.

She brings the same unruffled attitude to cooking for her own family, and in this very warm and personal book reveals her secrets to making easy, elegant meals day in and day out.

Filled with more than 200 recipes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, this book not only highlights Sara’s own culinary creativity but is also a treasury of Sara’s family favorites–from her mother, grandmother, and others. Dishes are geared largely to everyday meals, with loads of child-friendly recipes such as Ruthie’s Famous Chocolate French Toast, Carrot “Fettucine,” and Pasta Pizza. There are fabulous quick dishes–Blasted Chicken and Sauteed Pork Loin with Mustard and Grapes, and a tempting selection of vegetarian main courses. Sophisticated yet simple dishes, such as Rosemary Scallion Crusted Rack of Lamb, make entertaining effortless. Desserts include some of Sara’s childhood favorites, among them Summer Blueberry Pudding and Vermont Apple Crisp, along with adult discoveries–Mocha Cookies and an irresistible rum-soaked holiday cake made from mixes. Michael Green of Gourmet provides a chapter on pairing wine that goes well beyond the recipes in the book.

In the tradition of blockbuster cookbooks by Emeril Lagasse, Mario Batali, and Lidia Bastianich, Sara Moulton Cooks at Home is a bestseller-in-the-making from one of America’s favorite television food personalities.

I just received this book and while I have not had time to experiment the the recipes, I have to say that I find it a bit difficult to read through. Don't get me wrong, the author is very engaging and I am looking forward to trying out the recipes, it is just that the font for the recipe titles is not quite browsing-friendly.

Editorial Review:

200 recipes--from appetizers to desserts--for this nutritious and increasingly popular vegetable.

Potatoes are the world's best food. You can boil them, bake them, fry them, sauté them, grill, braise, roast, and microwave them. Potatoes are irresistible, and Lydie Marshall's recipes for them are sublime. The book is an international compendium of tempting and varied dishes by one of America's most talented cooks.

A great book for potato-lovers 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I think the previous reviewer is very harsh and can't really back up his reasoning for disliking the book. I have spent a lot of time flipping through it and planning which recipes to try, and have already tried a couple... I think there are some really great ideas in here for a potato-lover who wants to try something newer than the plain old recipes they might be used to. There are great ethnic potato recipes as well as classics with new and interesting twists. I have A LOT of cookbooks, about 80 or so, and I can honestly say that there are several recipes in this book that I am very anxious to try, so don't breeze past this one just because someone else gave it an unfair review. If you love potatoes, this is a great book you should look into.

A Real Keeper 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I have a several thousand cookbook collection - spanning some 40+ years. I have read each one and KNOW them. This book grabs your attention and holds it. I have a Top 100 Cookbooks (my very, very favorite ones) bookcase. A book has to pass rigid cooking/baking tests to get there. This book is there!!
Note: I have had FUN doing this all these years.
The recipe for "A Good White Bread" is about as tasty as white bread can ever be. (Hint: Make 1 BIG loaf with it) The "Pain de Babeurre" rolls are probably the best we have ever had. They raise big, fat, and are very soft inside. Where do I stop?
Get the book - trust me, you won't be sorry!

Trying to clog your family's arteries? This cookbook is for you! 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Having grown up around many Mormon families, I was excited to receive this cookbook and try out some of the recipes at our neighborhood potlucks. The book itself is beautiful, but the recipes are so unhealthy that it would be irresponsible to feed these finished dishes to families and friends. It's easy to make something fattening and unhealthy - which describes nearly everything in this cookbook - and I was hoping that the recipes would at least have been modified to make them healthier for today's lifestyles. I'm not a health food fanatic, and appreciate a fattening meal here and there, but this book is over-the-top in the "what not to eat" category. For me, there isn't much in this cookbook that sounds like it would be worth the trouble making.

Editorial Review:

The Essential Mormon Cookbook is a time-honored collection of recipes not found in standard cookbooks- family favorites passed down from generation to generation, traditional potluck dishes served at Church gatherings, and other gifts from the kitchen shared by neighbors and friends. This is the perfect source for these hard-to-find recipes you remember from your childhood, such as Christmas Morning Casserole, Pot Roast with Gravy, and Fresh Peach Cobbler. Also included are recipes to feed a crowd, compassionate service casseroles, and a conference-weekend brunch. More than 200 recipes, gathered from four generations of family cooks, are divided by seasons and event in this unique collection of Mormon comfort food.

Kathleen Lindsey has written a wonderful book that captures the spirit of family love and unity. I have purchased four books and I've given three to family members as gifts. The artwork is excellent and beautifully captures the story. You will love how Sadie, the narrator, tells a heartwarming story of a family uniting together to save their farm. "Sweet Potato Pie" is a sweet story written by a talented author.

A book to share again and again and again... 5 out of 5 stars.

What a treat! A delightfully written, beautifully illustrated treasure that will hold a special place on my bookshelf for many years to come. I've already read it to two of my grandchildren, and very successfully used it in a tutoring session with an older child. This lovingly crafted story of love, determination, and family provided a springboard to discussion with my student that proved enlightening for both of us. He has even asked to read it again next session. Bravo, Kathleen Linsey! When can we expect the next?

OK, but some are weird 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am a potato FREAK, so of course I bought this cookbook. Problems: no pictures, and some of the recipes are really weird--like it's a contest to see what meals you can fit a potato into--like "potato candy". Much better is the Williams-Sonoma Potato Cookbook.

Editorial Review:

In America, the potato is used today primarily as a side dish: mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, or French fries. Many people do not know of the potato's long and colorful history. Nor do they know that the "spud" is one of the world's most nutritious and most versatile foods. It is so versatile that recipes for dishes as varied as Chocolate-Potato Layer Cake, Pumpkin and Potato Soup, and Potato Pizza may be found in this wonderful cookbook. Who knew that potatoes could be a main ingredient for cookies, cakes, and desserts, as well as breakfasts, main dishes, appetizers, and more?
