Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is what I've always wanted a cookbook to be, it includes a shopping, equipment and ingredient list with pictures for each and every one of the recipes, and rich, full color photographs not only of the finished product, but of the process and techniques. The recipes, which are already so great and so easy, include variations...what can I say, this book is one great find!

Editorial Review:

Pasta and Scallop Salad, Black Forest Potato Salad, Waldorf Chicken Salad, and Thai Noodle Salad are among the tasty temptations in "Perfect Salads". This cookbook provides illustrated shopping lists, detailed shopping guides, and full-color photos.

Great Book..Loved It 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I did find some of the recipes were a bit hard, but all in all, I had fun trying to make them all. I am not very good at it, but I have always wanted to learn what my Grandmother could do. I have since become pretty good at canning and jelly making. The recipes are very accurate ingredient wise, but make sure you read the directions before starting. It can get confusing..but if you read it twice it makes sense. I am in Japan right now, so haven't had a chance to try them all as I need some ingredients I can't get here. Buy this book...your family will love you for it, and it saves money! You no longer have to buy jelly for $3 at the grocery store.

Great Book! Why is it out of print?! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I never would have thought making one's own mustard would be such a treat, but after reading the book and following the recipes, I am hooked. (As are many of my friends, since homemade mustard turns out to make a great gift.)

Most of the mustard recipes call for a lot more salt than I think is necessary, but that's the only adjustment I deemed necessary. The easy-to-follow directions work--the results are delicious.

Don't miss the Chinese Toasted Sesame mustard and its accompanying recipe for Albacore (or Ahi, which is what I've always used). It is an absolute winner.

Editorial Review:

Dozens of recipes show how to make roasted garlic mustard, Chinese toasted sesame mustard, raspberry mustard, and many other mustards from scratch, while one hundred additional recipes show how to use mustards in a wide range of dishes.

The definition of "Old-Fashioned"... 4 out of 5 stars.

I have all of these adorable little 'Cook Books from Amish Kitchens', and have really enjoyed them. The are very small and simple... the complete opposite of a coffee-table/display-style cookbooks we see most often today. This is a thin pamphlet with matte paper and does not include interior photos of any recipes (excluding the cover). The text is in a handwritten-style font and clearly explained. The recipes are very homey with basic ingredients and techniques; nothing fancy. Simple, delicious recipes in a simple, small booklet. RECOMMENDED.

Editorial Review:

Salads are at long last taking center stage in the kitchen and around the table.

Not just a side dish anymore, they have become light, wholesome meals that satisfy even the heartiest of appetites, showcasing seasonal vegetables, grilled meats, cheeses, and more. In Salads, celebrated chef Peter Gordon provides endless inspiration for the perfect warm-weather dish through combinations of fresh flavors and contrasting textures. Each chapter is brimming with both classic and novel approaches to the main-course salad based on vegetables, cheese, meat, poultry, and fish, and there are even chapters devoted to canapé and dessert salads. Refreshing new combinations include:

•Watermelon, Feta, and Basil Salad with Pumpkin Seeds on Shrimp Crackers

•Crayfish, Avocado, Grapefruit, and Ginger Salad

•Poached Chicken, Hazelnut, Watercress, and Pea Salad

•Thai-Style Beef Salad with Cilantro, Mint, Lime, and Peanuts

•Broiled Banana and Mango Salad with Vanilla-Poached Peach

In addition to his irresistible recipes, Gordon identifies the essential elements of an ideal salad, offering ways to add “crunch,” advice on seasonings, and a range of garnishes and basic dressings. Packed with stunning photographs and Gordon’s accessible, down-to-earth techniques, Salads breathes new life into this classic dish.

Every recipe is a winner! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have a cookbook library numbering in the 100's and this little book is one of the best! I have tried most of the recipes and all so far have been excellent. The recipes are simple and often use ingredients usually on hand, which allows for last minute home-made.The yields are also a nice proportion since fresh does not keep as long as bottled.I have given this cookbook as a gift because I like it so much.

Leafy greens 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 30 people found this review helpful.

So, you have stood in how many Asian grocery stores looking at the abundant greenery of these leafy veges? Too embrassed to ask the cashier what the hell to do to do with it . So you amble out with your head hung in wonderment. Wonder no more! Bittman to the rescue. Which pugnent goes with which sweet. Ohh the texture and the lace like delicatness of each leaf. He will set you straight. A true saviour to the salad bowl. I'm enlightened and impressed. No more boring B-B-Q salads. Thankyou.

Editorial Review:

Addressing the need for flavorful, antioxidant-rich foods, a collection of recipes highlights thirty leafy green vegetables that complement such suggestions as Crispy-Skin Salmon on a Bed of Gingery Kale and Hot and Sour Bok Choi.
