The plot thickens and the fun continues 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The first book in Brian K. Vaughan's Y: THE LAST MAN set up the premise: all the males in the world of every species have died except for loser named Yorick Brown and his pet monkey Ampersand. In the chaos that follows American society is oppressed by totalitarian Amazons, who are marked ideologically by an intense detestation of all things male (in later books they will even try to tear down structures they imagine are male) and by their ill-informed attempt to mimic Amazons by cutting off one breast (actually, there is no good evidence that the mythical Amazons removed a breast so as to be better archers, and I've been told by women who are actually good with a bow that there is no physiological reason to need to do so).

In this book Yorick, Ampersand, the mysterious Agent 355, and Dr. Mann begin their continent wide journey to Mann's San Francisco genetics lab, where she hopes to find a cure for the plague that has killed all males. Along they way they are pursued by the Israeli military, stay awhile in a small town filled with escaped prison inmates, and encounter a group of Amazons, including Yorick's sister Hero.

If you push the book very hard, all kinds of problems arise. I choose not to push the book very hard. But let me indication the ways someone so inclined might push. First, Vaughan depicts an entire society that has collapsed almost completely. The implication is that society is not merely male-dominated, but male-driven. One fantasy I have whenever I go on vacation is that when I return, my office will have collapsed into chaos. Instead, when I return, things are pretty much like I left them. I believe much the same thing would be true were all men to suddenly vanish. Yes, there would be interruptions, but none total and complete. Second, no one seems to sense the need for either Yorick or Ampersand to play any kind of active role in replenishing their species. This is just silly. If I were placed in such a role, I would feel it incumbent to help any way I could (and I truly do not mean that in any kind of salacious way). That Yorick would feel it possible to maintain a relationship exclusively with his girlfriend Beth is incredible. Third, are the Amazons in any way believable? Can we possibly believe that mass groups of women would delight in the disappearance of all males? I could go on, but I tend to read Y: THE LAST MAN like I watch HEROES: I avoid any tough questions. This is why for me Y: THE LAST MAN fails to stand up to the very best long graphic sequences, like Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN or why HEROES fails to measure up to BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER or BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: neither can stand up to the hard questions. Still, taken with your critical eye blinded, this is enormous fun.

Editorial Review:

The series that has taken the US by storm comes to the UK in the second of an all-new Titan graphic novel series! From writer Brian K. Vaughan (Swamp Thing, The Hood) and up-and-coming artist Pia Guerra comes a view of a dystopian society where suddenly - and without warning - a mysterious plague kills every living creature on the planet with a Y chromosone...in other words, no more men! Except one. Yorick Brown has somehow survived. It's now a very different world, and his unique status is far from privileged. He finds himself on the run from a coven of Amazons who want him dead...one of whom is his own sister!

Good, though not quite as good as what came before 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Warning! Spoilers ahead!

This struck me as not quite as good as previous books mainly because not quite as necessary. The series at this point is tracking the journey of Yorick and his entourage from Boston to California and it is as if Vaughan decided he had to create events at the Great Divide and in Arizona to pass time before finally arriving at Dr. Mann's lab. The section where Agent 355's former colleague tortures Yorick as a form of suicide intervention is easily the worst segment of any part of the series to this point, with the possible exception of every mention of the Amazons (as a historical note, the myth that the Amazons cut off a breast in order to aim a bow more efficiently is not a part of the early progress of the Amazons). And I definitely didn't care for the ultra-right-wing Sons of Arizona that occupied the second half of the book.

Still, there were some major new revelations. Let me enumerate. 1) We learn that Dr. Mann is gay and may have an attraction to Agent 355. 2) There are members of the Culper Ring who have a different agenda than 355 and are ruthless in pursuing it. 3) Hero hasn't gone away, but is searching for her brother. 4) The pregnant astronaut from Book 3 has given birth to a son. 5) Dr. Mann did not clone her nephew, as she previously told 355 and Yorick, but herself.

While not as good as previous books, this is still a worthy contribution to one of the most compelling long series in graphic art. It is highly recommended because the series as a whole is highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Guided by the outstanding writing talents of Brian K. Vaughan (Swamp Thing, Ultimate X-Men) and rising star artist Pia Guerra, this acclaimed, genre-busting and controversial series continues apace! After a devastating plague, Yorrick Brown is the last man left alive in a world of women. On the run from Amazon extremists who would be happy to see him dead, his friends leave him in the care of Agent 711. But 711 is not the tragic woman she seems to be and Yorrick is propelled into a drug-fuelled nightmare of blood and sadism. Stretching the graphic novel envelope again, the fourth volume in the series shows why this title continues to be held in such high regard.

Calvin and Hobbes at their best 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Well, I must admit I have had this book since I was in 8th grade when my best friend at the time gave it to me. I still crack up when I'm going through the pages upon pages of strange situations that Calvin and his stuffed friend find themselves in. Definately a must for any C&H fan and really funny. Buy it.

A vicarious return to childhood 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

What can be said about Calvin & Hobbes that hasn't already been shouted to the heavens by legions of prematurely grown-up fans ?

Calvin is the eternal Child/Id within us all, and Hobbes is his stuffed tiger / best friend / faithful companion in arms come-to-life ... and together they swashbuckle their way through a childhood world populated with drooling monsters of the imagination, screaming ray-guns, carboard boxes turned magical transmogrifiers, and giant tut-tutting adults who are forever dragging us back from our revels by the ear, in order to make us wipe our feet, bathe, eat, do our homework, and go to bed on time.

By laughing at Calvin & Hobbes, we get to vicariously relive some of our own carefree childhoods exploits ... exploits which echo in our adult lives, because (looks both ways) we never actually grew up. Only our bodies did.

Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

"Be good to yourself: Buy a copy of this Calvin and Hobbes cartoon book. If you don't laugh out loud at every third strip, check your pulse. You may be dead." --Phil Musick, Pittsburgh Press

Calvin is a rambunctious six-year-old whose manic antics threaten world peace. Hobbes is his stuffed tiger who comes alive when adults aren"t around. The saga of their daily exploits won cartoonist Bill Watterson the coveted Reuben Award for "Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year." Something Under the Bed Is Drooling is a jewel.

Brilliant art and fond memories 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Few video game franchises have both the history and relevance of Street Fighter today. It's truly timeless, with so many incarnation sparking so many different emotions for so many different people.

This book captures that feeling perfectly. It's a blend of gorgeous artwork and raw emotion. Some of the artists clearly have a passion for Street Fighter and most have very strong nostalgia for the series.

This is perfect for anyone's library or coffee table. And if you're any kind of Street Fighter fan, you owe it to yourself to snag a copy.

Editorial Review:

Good grief! The Complete Peanuts is the most ambitious and most important project in the comics and cartooning genre: over a period of 12 years, Fantagraphics Books will release every daily and Sunday strip of Charles M. Schulz's "Peanuts," the best-known and best-loved series in the world.

1950-52
Most everyone with an interest in its history has seen the very first strip ("Good ol' Charlie Brown... How I hate him!"), but this first volume follows it up with 287 pages (three daily strips or one Sunday per page) of vintage material in chronological order. "Peanuts" was unique at the time for portraying kids who seemed like real kids, but they also had a wisdom beyond their years, embodied especially by the lovable loser, Charlie Brown, who even in these early years has lost 4000 checker games in a row. We see him don his familiar jagged-stripe shirt for the first time (December 1950) and, at the age of 4, at his peak as a babe magnet. Shermy is the other significant boy, and the girls in their lives are Patty (not to be confused with Peppermint Patty) and Violet. Schroeder is an infant who has learned to sit up in order to play Beethoven on his toy piano. Snoopy is an anthropomorphic dog who plays baseball (April 1952) and has his own thoughts (October 1952). In March 1952 we meet a bug-eyed Lucy, who by November has been designated "Miss Fuss-Budget of 1952" and is pulling the football away from Charlie Brown (Violet had done it a year earlier). Her baby brother Linus arrives in July 1952. The book itself is beautifully packaged, the strips printed large and clear on high-quality paper and accompanied by an in-depth essay by David Michaelis, a 1987 interview with Schulz, an introduction by Garrison Keillor, and even an index of characters and subjects.

1953-54
The second volume covers 1953-54, and the visual style and character development is closer to the kids we know and love, as they try to exist in a grown-up world. Charlie Brown is no longer the object of Patty and Violet's affection--derision, more like--and his pattern of losing continues. His misery at checkers hits 5000 (June 1953), 6000 (August), 7000 (November), 8000 (still November), and 10,000 (December) consecutive games, he gets shut out on Valentine's Day (February '53), he wears his first bad Halloween costume (October '54), and he gets a form rejection slip from Santa (December '54). On the baseball diamond, though, he actually has the lead in a game (April '53, but we don't see the final score) and briefly plays catcher. By now Lucy has become the main girl in the strip, and in addition to beating Charlie Brown at checkers, she begins her romantic pursuit of Schroeder (January '53), joins the baseball team (August '54), and wins her third consecutive Miss Fussbudget of the Year title (November '54). Her younger brother, Linus, starts what will become a longstanding feud with Snoopy in the first Sunday strip of '53, shows he's a prodigy in jump rope, blocks, houses of cards, and balloon blowing, and cuddles his security blanket (May '54). Schroeder continues his obsession with Beethoven and reveals the secret to playing great literature on a plastic piano with painted-on black keys (practice and "getting the breaks"). We meet two new characters, the perpetually dirty Pig-Pen (July '54) and the loudmouthed Charlotte Braun, whose funny name wasn't enough to keep her around for long. Charles M. Schulz, whose own insecurity manifested itself in Charlie Brown (who not coincidentally draws his own cartoons), came up with his first multiple-strip storyline (starting with a four-Sunday series of Lucy joining a golf tournament coached by Charlie Brown, May '54) in this period, and provides us with a glimpse of the 1950s--deco furniture ("What in the world is a 'rocking chair'? asks CB), 3-D movies, H-bomb testing, and even what in hindsight looks like a prediction of the troubles in Vietnam (May '54). The second volume maintains the high quality of the first volume; even if it doesn't have the same extent of extra materials, it has an introduction by Walter Cronkite, a note on one strip that had to be partially reconstructed, and that handy index of characters and topics. --David Horiuchi

Graphic SF Reader 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am not sure I have ever met anyone who has read some Calvin and Hobbes comic strips and hated them. I suppose there might be a person or two out there allergic to stuffed toy tigers, perhaps, or had a horrible accident involving one. Those would be the only people I could think of that would not find these strips entertaining, no matter what age.

Well, well, well is it gret or what? 5 out of 5 stars.

No,its not just a bunch of random stuff, its a bunch of random funny stuff!! Its funny for Calvin being a little scared of Hobbes, and all that really funny stuff. Although Calvin's only a 1st grader, he sounds like he's really smart. So, I guess whoever is looking at this I have convinced them to buy it, just because it's so funny!!!!!!!

Editorial Review:

Calvin and Hobbes books have taken the country by storm and here's the biggest, brightest one yet! Calvin and Hobbest soared to the top of the bestseller lists in its first month of publication, selling a million copies within 9 months of publication. Something Under The Bed Is Drooling exploded out of the stores, selling nearly a million copies within the first month of publication! Now, those two books are brought together in this over-size anthology-type book. Adding to the fun in The Essential Calvin and Hobbes are an original 16-page story and color Sunday cartoons.

Good, as always. 4 out of 5 stars.

Neil Gaiman, Sandman: Fables and Reflections (DC Comics, 1999)

Once again, we have a book of nine unconnected short graphic stories that touch on the Sandman in some way. As usual, both the quality of the writing and the art is superb; the whole team was pretty much above reproach by the time they got this far in the series.

The strongest of the stories, "The Hunt," shows both Gaiman and the illustrative team at the peaks of their powers. Thankfully, the majority of the book is of this quality. When it dips ("Fear of Falling," the closest thing to a throwaway piece that's been seen in Sandman's world to date), it does so only briefly, and we get back to the good stuff.

As always, well worth your time. ****

Editorial Review:

From the mists of the past to the nightmares of the present, Neil Gaiman's THE SANDMAN touches the lives of kings and knaves, explorers, storytellers, monsters and children. This collection of short tales explores historical figures from Augustus Caesar to Marco Polo, from The Arabian Nights to Revolutionary France.

Fun light hearted fantasy 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

In addition to the stunning art work, this particular series is the best I've ever seen for combining a gripping plot with unashamed and delightful erotica. The characters are vibrant and funny yet at the same time being people flawed enough to be believable and liked. The plot actually is surprising unpredictable compared to even mainstream fantasy.

This second collection is sadly shorter then the first, but the quality is still amazing and it still long enough to be worth the read.

Love, love, love it! A yaoi must have! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book has everything you could want in a yaoi manga;smoking hot guys (Havi is downright delicious!), hot sex, of course ;) but there's so much more. There is depth to the fantasy plotline and a genuine sweetness to the story. You really find yourself rooting for Vald and Havi and you just know that once they're together again everything will turn out alright. I won't tell you anything that will ruin it for you, it's much better to discover it on your own! If you are a fan of yaoi, like i am, then you will LOVE this book! I own the first and second volumes, both are great! There is not as much sex in the second one; it's more devoted to developing the story. Vald and Havi are also separated for a good chunk of volume two which also cuts down on the intimacy a little. Don't worry though, you get your fix before volume two ends! :)

Editorial Review:

A curse is a difficult thing to break. Vald, prince of Alsvieth upon taking up arms to defend his country was beset with a curse that transforms him into a ravenous cannibalistic beast.

The Best Volume, By Far; No "Sacred Cows" 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

By far his best volume yet, for Kirkman there are no "sacred cows". I was beginning to think the series was getting a bit stale, Kirkman just upped the ante. How much pain and suffering can poor Rick Grimes take? I don't know, but I'm really enjoying watching him go thru it. It's has been said, what doesn't destroy you, makes you strong. Once Rick truly learns that his survival is important, he will be a force to be reckoned with.

Wow. 5 out of 5 stars.

A week ago I bought volume 1 of The Walking Dead. The next day, I bought volumes 2-5. The next day I bought 6-8. This series, is relentless, disturbing, heart-breaking and fantastic in every possible horror way.

Fans of zombies, survival horror, clever writing, beautiful art or just good old fashioned loss of humanity, would be seriously remiss to pass on this series.

Editorial Review:

The series that created the zombie movement reaches its most pivotal, series-altering arc yet! They thought they were safe in the prison. They were wrong. A force far more deadly than the walking dead is at their door and when the dust settles, their rank will be reduced by more than half. No one is safe!

Editorial Review:

Mayhem and violence rule in this collection of issues one through seven of Jhonen Vasquez's Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, as well as material seen before only in Carpe Noctem magazine. Dark and disturbingly funny, JTHM follows the adventures of Johnny (you can call him Nny), who lives with a pair of styrofoam doughboys that encourage his madness, a wall that constantly needs a fresh coat of blood, and--oh, yeah--his victims in various states of torture. Join Nny as he frightens the little boy next door (Todd, known to fans of Vasquez's work as Squee), thirsts for Cherry Brain Freezies, attempts suicide, draws Happy Noodle Boy, and tries to uncover the meaning of his homicidal existence.
