An exception poker book! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I like this book because it doesn't go in detail on what starting hand requirements a person should play. This is an advanced concept book and is not for folks who are just starting out playing hold'em.

I won't take away from Mr. Snyder and lay out the content of his book online. You can purchase the book for all of that. However, I will describe a few of topics otherwise no one will be inclined to read his material.

One of the interesting things about the book (and it's not even listed as a selling point) is the 10 functions you have with your chip stack.

Think about it for a second, can you list down all the functions your chips stack has besides adding to the pile? PFT2 goes into detail on how to use your chip stack to make information bets, value bet, dominate small stacks.

The books primary focus is utilizing the weapons you have at hand to develop a monstrous chip stack.

Editorial Review:

Snyder adapts the loose aggressive fast tournament strategies of his groundbreaking first book to the big buy-in events where the real money is made. Players learn never-before-revealed concepts and secrets that shows players why cards don't matter as much as the dynamics of a tournament. Readers learn how to alter their strategy for any tournament structure and opponent, why hands must be played differently from cash games, and why players can't figure out what winners are doing just from watching them play. The book also covers optimal satellite strategy, sit'n'go strategy, methods for estimating tournament win rate and edge, plus:
  • Why many of the most skillful poker players fail in poker tournaments
  • Why it's often correct to play a hand "wrong" in a tournament
  • How to develop the optimal strategy for any tournament based on its blind structure
  • How to consistently build a big stack and use it to terrorize your opponents

Awesome Guide!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This guide is great, it covers everything in the entire game. It even arrived 2 days earlier than expected!! Definitely worth the money.

Cloud and Aerith chill with Sephiroth 4 out of 5 stars.

Finally playing out FFVII to learn the original story. This walkthrough is a helpful guide through the complex world of Midgar, Shinra, Cloud and party, Chocobos and monsters. Loads of technical info help equip Materia and items, weapons and accessories properly.
The relatively low resolution of the Playstation game is a difficulty present generation gamers need help with (like me). It is sometimes hard to tell just what is going on when the charachters look like they are Lego people shooting pixels.
At times I found the walkthrough maps dense, too dark, and filled with letters and numbers not easy to relate to a legend.
The sequence of your wanderings is essential for a coherent story. This walkthrough pays close attention to this need and has allowed me to experience the memorable encounters and hi-res scenes recently recreated in Advent Children so well.
This walkthrough is already dog-eared and worn though I'm barely halfway through. I'm sure it will have served me well to the 'Final' boss.

Editorial Review:

This Squaresoft-sanctioned book on one of the most highly anticipated console games ever does not disappoint. Those who have managed to obtain a copy of the game (descriptions of rioting and fighting upon the retail release of Final Fantasy IIV sound like sheer hyperbole, but probably aren't) will find plenty of helpful clues, maps, and general game play advice. Those less fortunate can at least take solace in--or further whet their appetites with--the hundreds of beautiful glossy screen shots that fill each chapter.

I you have a loved one doing some unfortunate incaraceration time, this is a great gift. It helps pass the time, promotes humorous conversation with other cellis, and it stimulates the mind. It will last some time and it is an acceptable gift if you order it and have it shipped from Amazon. It will not be concidered contraband unless they decide to wet it and make a sculpture or something. Everyone enjoyed it.

Everything..even goof ups!! 4 out of 5 stars.

Not a bad puzzle book really, maybe not as good as some others but Ok nonetheless. However, they skimped on proofing I think, as the easy crossword puzzles are listed as the medium and vice-versa. A little discombobulating!

Puzzles for dad 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I actually bought this book for my dad - an older gentleman who needs to keep the ol' brain pleasantly occupied. I coupled it with a (ubiquitous) sudoku set, too. He told me last week that he's been rationing them out so he won't finish the book too soon. Great stuff.

only for crossword lovers 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

this is a great book. you must be an extreme crossword lover. i give it a three because all the puzzles are just too hard for me, not including the find the word. a little unfair rating, but it just wasn't what i expected. i wanted to see at least one suduko puzzle.

On Dragonlance 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Let me start by first outlining the conditions under which I endeavoured to read the Dragonlance Chronicles.
Relatively recently I developed an interest in the Fantasy Genre and thus decided to explore its various sub-genres; immerse myself in Fantasy's myriad "worlds".
So, having done some preliminary research on the internet, and diligent perusing in my local Borders bookstore, I came to appreciate the fundamentals of the genre: Sword & Sorcery Vs Epic Fantasy; the 1960s and 1970s Vs the 1980s; biblical length trilogies Vs Short story masters etc etc.
My introduction into fantasy began with Stephen Donaldsons 'Chronicles of Thomas Covenant'. The first trilogy, though controversial and much debated by the genre's enthusiasts, I found to be superb. Soon, however, the intricacy and scope of "Epic" fantasy faded into the pretentiousness and monotony of unnecessrily LONG books.
Having felt that I had strayed too far in one direction, I next turned my attention to the other end of the spectrum.
Fritz Leiber's 'First Book Of Lhankmar', though extremely well written and undeniably witty, rang too hollow for my taste. Robert E. Howards legendary 'Conan' stories, though hinting at something amazing in numerous stories, I found too "pulpy" nonetheless. I tried reading 'The Lord of the Rings', and twice got halfway through, but I just couldn't finish it.
At last I came to understand what it was I wanted out of Fantasy fiction:
1) I wanted a world I could immerse myself in, withouting drowning in unnecessary details.
2) I wanted a darker, more realistic treatment of characters and characterization.
3) I was willing to follow a trilogy or long series, provided that each successive novel was not a repeat of the original.

So, having read the 'Dark Elf Trilogy' in its entirety (Forgotten Realms), I decided to give 'Dragonlance' a fair chance even though
a) The cover art I found to be quite off-putting.
b) I was worried the books were more for children than adults
and
c) I have a great dislike for all things elven and dwarfish.

I must be honest, I only got halfway through the first volume of the 'Chronicles','Dragons of Autumn Twilight', before I just couldn't go on. The reasons are as follows:

1) The characters are terribly mono-dimensional and cliche beyond description. Consquently the dialogue, in which it must be said the story drowns, is as captivating as watching drying paint. I became so adept at predicting EXACTLY what a character would say that I began to wonder if or not I was psychic.
2) Cliches, cliches, cliches. The story died of cliches.
3) It seemed as if Hickman and Weis deliverately tried to make the story as trivial as possible. But, there is a clear difference between banality and light-heartedness. The authors simultaneously sell this book as Epic and grand, yet they emphasize the happy-go-lucky nature of the characters and plot.

In the final analysis I must advise against purchasing the 'Dragonlance Chronicles'. This book is not for adults. End of story.

Thankyou for your time.

Editorial Review:

This three-book set is perfect for collectors and an ideal gift for readers unfamiliar with the Dragonlance setting. The Chronicles Trilogy -- Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night, and Dragons of Spring Dawning--are enclosed in a hard-sided slipcover case featuring the stunning cover art from the series.

Editorial Review:

Fortune's Formula is a fascinating study of the connections between such seemingly unrelated topics as gambling, information theory, stock investing, and applied mathematics. The story involves the stunning brainpower of men such as MIT professor Claude Shannon, who single-handedly invented information theory, the science behind the Internet and all digital media; Ed Thorpe; and John Kelly of Bell Laboratories, who developed the "Kelly criterion," a now-legendary investment strategy for maximizing growth while controlling risk. Initially, Shannon and Thorpe took Kelly's theory to Las Vegas and applied it to roulette and blackjack. Later, they took it to Wall Street and cleaned up--Shannon made a personal fortune while Thorpe created the highly successful hedge firm Princeton-Newport Partners. They both discovered that Kelly's system was particularly effective when applied to arbitrage (minute price differences that result from market inefficiencies). As Poundstone ably demonstrates, the merits of Kelly's criterion are still hotly debated today.

Poundstone has a tendency to meander in his writing, but his asides are so revealing and interesting that they add, rather than detract, from the narrative. The book also includes a cast of fascinating and colorful characters as varied as Ivan Boesky, Warren Buffet, Rudolph Giuliani, and notorious mobsters such as Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky. In explaining the lasting impact of the work done by Shannon, Thorpe, and Kelly, Poundstone even explains Kelly's system for those wishing to follow his formula, offering readers both theoretical and practical lessons. Whether viewed as a how-to guide or straight scientific and financial history, Fortune's Formula proves an entertaining and illuminating analysis of "the most successful gambling system of all time." --Shawn Carkonen

This was purchased for two kids, 9 and 13, to take on a trip for use in the car or the expected rainy afternoons. Fun to do and a challenge for their grandparents, too.

Highly recommended book of puzzles 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

A superbly designed book of puzzles. You will find all types of "brain games" with different degrees of difficulty clearly marked. An index at the end of the book allows you to choose a "brain game" according to its type and degree of difficulty. Solutions to all brain games are at the end of the book.
Very colourful and inviting for all ages. Just leave it on your coffee table and all the family will stop to browse it and try their hands (or brains rather) at any of these attractively presented puzzles.

Editorial Review:

An obsessive collection of 1,000 challenges, puzzles, riddles, and illusions--originals as well as must-do classics. It's like popcorn for the brain with jam-packed pages and a full-color illustration for each entry, this book is a call to action. Twelve basic catagories including Geometry, Patterns, Numbers, Logic and Probability, and Perception. An easy-to-read key at the top of each game ranks its difficulty on a scale of 1 to 10, while indices in the back crossreference the puzzles. The answers are included too. 432 pages. 9 3/8 x 10 1/2 inches.

A Trivia Book Worthy of a 5 Star Review 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is awesome. For all who have ever played Star Wars Trivial Pursuit or any other game and wished there was more, here it is.

This book combines all types of trivia from all 6 movies, as well as E.U. information and real life info, i.e. actors and such.

This book, has, like it says, 2,500 questions. I was amazed at how different they are and how broad the spectrum runs for the questions. Some are short, easy to figure questions, such as changing the name of a character, where others are extremely difficult, like having to know what specific genome of a species a certain character is, or who a certain droid was from the movie.

I wholeheartedly believe this to be the best Star Wars trivia book out, and recommend it for both new Star Wars fans and hardcore fans that know every little nuance of the SW Galaxy.

Editorial Review:

Even the most die-hard Star Wars fans will find themselves challenged by this entertaining new approach to the details of the saga. This fourth volume in the popular addictive Obsessed With series again includes an innovative scoring module right in the book so a player can select questions by number or at random and keep score. With 2 500 original questions covering little known facts entertaining quotes and tough trivia from all six episodes Obsessed With Star Wars will have readers dominating the galaxy in no time.

Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.

I was constantly breaking even before getting this book on online poker sites. After reading it, I took nearly all of the guesswork out of my playstyle and recently just bought a new guitar entirely with winnings.

I recommend this book to anyone who already considers themselves decent at poker and already has good intuition as to spotting how others play to determine what they have... or don't have. This book will not probably help you with those things. This book is best for those who are already good at poker but either have their game strategy wrong or off a little.

The best part of this book is it makes it much more easy to spot poor play from other people at your table and thus allows you to profit hugely from that.

Editorial Review:

Texas Hold 'em is not an easy game to play well. To become an expert you must balance many concepts, some of which occasionally contradict each other. In 1988, the first edition appeared. Many ideas, which were only known to a small, select group of players, were made available to anyone who was striving to become an expert, and the hold 'em explosion had begun. It is now a new century, and the authors have again moved the state of the art forward by adding over 100 pages of new material, including extensive sections on "loose games," and "short-handed games." Anyone who studies this text, is well disciplined, and gets the proper experience should become a significant winner. Some of the other ideas discussed include play on the first two cards, semi-bluffing, the free card, inducing bluffs, staying with a draw, playing when a pair flops, playing trash hands, desperation bets, playing in wild games, reading hands, and psychology.
