Many beginners to magic (and others who should know better) are of the opinion that a magic effect has to be difficult in order to be worthwhile. While there are many killer effects that take months or years of practice, there are equally wonderful tricks that rely on psychology, subtlety, and/or advance preparation. The Self Working series of books are a treasure trove of great magic. This book is no exception. Many of the included tricks are used by successful professional magicians. Admittedly, these are best used in a program with other, more elaborate tricks, but for those moments in your act where you need a short, sweet effect, something in this book might just fill the bill. And as you get more proficient in magic you will find ways to further embellish these tricks and make them your own private miracles.

Great basic reference for residential building 5 out of 5 stars.

Have been using this reference for years as an Architect. Probably the best one out there that covers all the basics. Not overly complicated. Could use an advanced version for more complicated details, especially in roofing (half-hips, etc.) and foundations.
Great reference for the nomencalture of all the parts.
Do not expect to build from it as codes and structural sizing are required and vary too much, but good, basic detailing and understanding overall with plenty of illustrations.

I do a lot of non-professional new construction. For me, visualizing the right way do do something is the problem. Once the skin is on a building I have no idea what lies underneath -- I have no 'guide' to model my construction after. Also, building according to convention is useful -- for instance, it's good to know that you can expect to find a vertical stud in a wall every 16 or 24 inches, regardless of who built the building and when -- and this book clarifies what those conventions are.

This is a great book. The graphic representations are exceptionally clear and detailed. Many alternatives are given, and in building you simply choose the alternative that gives you the most of what you want and follow the diagram.

Chess Tactics, Traps and Combination books - the best way to get better 4 out of 5 stars.

When you are a beginner there is nothing better than studying books on Tactics, Traps and Combinations in chess. This is because the mind of a beginner can certainly understand 1 + 1 = 2. The value of the pieces is clear and coming out ahead can be calculated. This is a point that is a first step in learning chess! Tactics, at any point of the game are important to learn. Knowing what they are, how they work and recognizing them at a glance is necessary if you are going to become a good chess player. "CHESS TACTICS FOR KIDS" works on the most important starting tactics by showing you what they are and giving brief examples. This is not a tactics workbook where you will find hundreds of examples (a good book to get after this) or a traps book (a book also good to get) where you can see the tactics arise from the first move of the game. It is a book where you will learn the "mechanics" of the tactics. The brief chapter on each tactic is a great way to get started!

Ideal for parties or simple personal enjoyment, So You Think You're Smart is enthusiastically recommended as a fun and engaging selection of riddles to challenge readers of all educational backgrounds.

So You Think You're Smart is a delightful book of word games that the entire family can enjoy. All games are concise, uncomplicated and, most of all, a lot of fun. They are about ordinary words and things that everybody knows about so only common knowledge and a bit of resourcefulness are needed to solve them.

The games are only one of the fun features. All answers are encrypted! Each is given on the same page as the game, but is printed upside-down and backward - as in a mirror image. To ensure that they cannot be accidentally read, the answers are further obscured by using italics and a reduced size type. A mirror is needed to reveal the answers - and a special unbreakable plastic one is provided with each book.

This is the best 4th edition adventure yet! The story and the hooks of Trollhaunt Warrens are really well done. It was written by Richard Baker one of the author's of "Red Hand of Doom" which is in my opinion the best module ever written.

This adventure has it all, plot, encounters, and fun. This is one of the better modules to come out in years. It's pretty long and basically split up into three parts. Each one taking probably 3 sessions. I'd estimate 45 hours to finish.

SPOILERS -- please don't read unless you're a DM - I'm still not giving everything away though.
A large group of trolls under the leadership of one who obtained a powerful artifact are growing in strength. The story starts out with some trolls throwing the head of a prince over a wall saying "Ha ha, your hero is nothing we will soon own all of this land!". The city sends for help, the party intercepts the message, and responds.

They head to the Warrens and slog through the caverns with all sorts of interesting encounters. In the Warrens are several factions vying for power or bullied into servitude. We all know evil turns against evil at the drop of a hat. There's even a black dragon who is allied with the trolls. They can fight it or avoid fighting and negotiate with a skill challenge.

Killing the troll leader is just the first step as trolls do not so easily die. The town gets attacked by more enemies. Creatures riding manticores bring "death from above" as they strike the middle of town from the air. I always enjoy defending towns. I will leave out a major spoiler but the party has to quickly return to the troll warren.

After a second major enemy battle they must pursue another enemy through a door into the feywild, awesome. The last part of the adventure takes place in the feywild against all manner of alien creatures native to the feywild; from briar hags to tree blights to quicklings to feymire crocodiles. There is some exploring of the alien world that is the feywild and one more climactic battle that ends the adventure.

There are multiple interesting encounters. There's one I think it's called the "Death Spiral" in a cavern where there are a series of progressively higher platforms like a gigantic spiral staircase. On the levels there is a Galeb Duhr that can push players down the levels. There are lots like that, they are just playing with the tactical possibilities, it's great. There are several big bad evil guys and even some recurring ones ;)hint hint.

Obsessed with...Baseball: Test Your Knowledge of America's Pastime (Obsessed With...)

I have nothing but good things to report about this Baseball trivia book so far. I got this book after first getting and loving the one about Movie Trivia. Obssessed With... Hollywood: Test Your Knowledge of the Silver Screen (Obsessed With) (Obsessed With...) So far I have no complaints with either. I would only point out that the Baseball book has a lot tougher questions than the Hollywood book so it's a little harder to get into a groove with it. Also the stats here are only through the 2006 season or so, so just be aware they are not completely up to date for newer stats and players.

This book is packed with very challenging baseball trivia questions, with a nice emphasis on the classic and modern eras. The electronic answer box worked just fine for me. The lower right corner houses the answer box that randomly gives you question numbers to flip to. You also use this box to answer multiple choice questions. It gives you instant feedback on correct and incorrect answers and tracks your accuracy.

The book, while solid, could have been constructed better. This is pretty much the same impression I got from the Hollywood book. The electronic answer box can break away from the hardcover if you're not careful, and I spied a few in the bookstore with that issue. In addition, after playing for a while I've come to think the binding is too tight. A spiral binding would have made flipping through the questions easier.

Regardless, the content is very good and this thing is surprisingly addictive. There is somewhat of a learning curve with this one, but if you love Baseball it's well worth the time.

I would definitely look into this series for other topics. This may not be as cool for home use as some of the newer multimedia DVD trivia games, like the various "Scene It" games Scene It? Movie Travel DVD Game. Still, this book is very portable and well designed with great content. At the price of around $16-$17, it's not a bad value.

Definitely give this one a try.
