The Realms are Dead 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Forgotten Realms has been a favorite fantasy setting of mine forever now. This latest edition is an abomination of all previous incarnations of the Realms. Ed Greenwood - how could you possibly condone your name being associated with this farce in any way? I actually feel gutted, disgusted, lifeless - and oh those are 3 words that can summarize the 4th edition of the realms. But if you'd like more, read on.

All of the color, the mystery, the excitement, the lore, the flavor, the history, the peoples, the locations, the empires, the wondrous places - all - GONE! All because the Spellplague (a.k.a WOTC money plague) was created and WOTC decided that a complicated setting was too much for their new target audience - 9-12 yr olds. How is this justified? Well, Wizards say that now you have all the control, you create the lands as you see fit for your campaign, you populate them and decide what monsters and heroes are a part of them. If I wanted that, I wouldn't pay good money for it, I would just make my own generic world to be populated by cookie-cutter NPC's - oh wait a second - that's just what this is! So people like Lady Alustriel, Szass Tam, Manshoon, Kheben Blackstaff, and many, many others are now simply background material if mentioned at all. Supposedly this is to allow the PC's to be stars of the show without such high-level NPC interference. Let me tell you something - I have been in many Realms based campaigns. I have been in games where NO and I mean NO high level NPC's of Faerun EVER come in contact with the PC's. So, if you are in a campaign where the adventure party is constantly having to report to Elminster for every minor orc they defeat or track they find and he then tells them exactly what it means, or the adventurers are in Thay and come across Szass Tam (even though they are 4th level, out of heals/spells, no magic items and have just fought a army of wraiths, ghouls, zombies, and other undead fiends) and are total party killed/wiped out - or even sillier - Drizz't Do"Urden "mysteriously" appears in Chult where the party is to help the struggling PC's out - YOU HAVE A TERRIBLE DM WHO IS RUNNING THE GAME WRONG - don't blame the setting for your horrible experience!!!.

Many other posts have touched upon other numerous terrible attributes of this book - the pantheon makes no sense, deities gone for no reason, others ascended for even more obscure reasons, fewer pages but higher price, the map is terrible, etc.

Stay far, far, away from this. The Realms are Officially Dead! Product Suicide by WOTC. Do not spend one cent on any more of their 4th edition B.S. MMORPG wanna be product. I would give negative stars if I could. One is way too generous.

A setting that I once felt rivaled that of even Middle Earth in its wonder and creativity itself is no more. Thanks WOTC for ruining a beautiful world and taking advantage of your loyal fan base. For shame!

Editorial Review:

Dark perils and great deeds await!

Welcome to Faerûn, a land of amazing magic, terrifying monsters, ancient ruins, and hidden wonders. The world has changed since the Spellplague, and from this arcane crucible have emerged shining kingdoms, tyrannical empires, mighty heroes, and monster-infested dungeons. The Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide presents a world of untold adventure; a land of a thousand stories shaped by the deeds of adventurers the likes of which Faerûn has never seen before.

This book includes everything a Dungeon Master needs to run a D&D campaign in the Forgotten Realms setting, as well as elements that DMs can incorporate into their own D&D campaigns. The book provides background information on the lands of Faerûn, a fully detailed town in which to start a campaign, adventure seeds, new monsters, ready-to-play non-player characters, and a full-color poster map of Faerûn.

My favorite poker book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book has become my favorite out of the dozens of poker books that I own. Before reading this book I was a marginal to losing player at on-line poker. Since reading this book, I have become a consistent winner at low and medium stakes SNG's. I honestly can't say that about any other poker book I have read.

Once you have read and understand the material in the low-blind, mid-blind and high blind sections it becomes an invaluable reference for constantly tuning your game. The organizational structure of the book makes it easy to quickly find a situation that you might want to review after an on-line session.

This book paid for itself within 24 hours of reading it. If you are serious about playing SNG's, but haven't been getting the results you desire, then this book is a must read.

Great book for SNG strategy 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book for SNG strategy if you are new to the concept.

But one could save themselves a lot of trouble by breaking it down to these three points:
1) there is going to be some variance in your wins, so make sure you have a large enough bankroll for the level you are playing (what "large enough" means varies by the player's skill and playing style)
2) play very tight early in the game, loosen up and be more aggressive later in the game
3) use SNG Wizard to review all of your games to learn where there are non-intuitive spots to get your money in when the blinds are high

Note that while this book is about NLHE, the basic concept will apply to nearly any SNG strategy, keeping in mind that for limit and PL games, it is slightly harder as your bet sizing is not always going to be much of a threat, therefore your fold equity does not count for much, which much of this strategy is built around.

Otherwise, this is essentially the mathematical model for beating the games.

I personally I have had less success (or perhaps just way more variance) in the turbo games, but crush the regular ones. The better you are, your skill is going to come from you making fewer mistakes, and you exploiting your opponents mistakes - that means in a turbo, there is going to be less time for your opponents to make mistake and so in theory the variance should be higher.

Outdated 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I ordered this book hoping i could become a better poker player but super system is way too outdated and most of the material is about games that arent played anymore. The NLHE section is general poker strategy by todays standards, i understand that super system was a great poker book when it first came out but now there r so many better poker books out there. Unless your a beginner poker player or would just want to read basically a poker history book, i wouldt suggest this book.

A little outdated but still enlightening 3 out of 5 stars.

The sections on no limit holdem are great. Since not many cardrooms play the other games, a large part of the book isn't really that applicable today unless you are in Vegas and have access to the other games.

Condition of book was perfect. Purchased this book for my son's birthday. He loved it.

Luv you Doyle but not this book! 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Very aggressive style of Hold Em, some may argue reckless. Everybody is playing this way so one needs to do the opposite and play tight. Doyle says sometimes even if I just have a bit of the flop I raise, if I lose then that's Poker....you have to gamble...ect... Too wreckless for my taste. This book cost me to get called with the 2nd best hand much too often! If you don't like it..well that's poker folks!

Fantastic book for kids of all ages 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

One of my 5 year old twins picked out this book at a book fair and it has not disappointed. We've spent many evenings together looking for the hidden items. My other 5 year old is a little scared by some of the pictures, but it really depends on your kid. I only wish there was an answer key somewhere, we can't find the hare on the first double page spread!

This book is great fun! 5 out of 5 stars.

My five year old son and I love to search through the pictures in this book. Ms. Barber, the hare is in the clouds by the moon. Did you find the hatchet in that spread? We can't find it anywhere.

A perfect Halloween read 4 out of 5 stars.

New York Times bestselling author Walter Wick is the co-creator of the I Spy series with Jean Marzollo. He's successfully directed his talent to a new book, On a Scary Scary Night: Can You See What I See?

Halloween is around the corner and it is great fun to be able to read some funny and scary (not too scary) stories to the children. Wick takes children and adults into fantasy land with his new search-and-find book, On a Scary Scary Night: Can You See What I See?

Wick designed and his assistants created the sets photographed in this book and the sets are stunning works of art.

Wick's book is a must read. Unless you actually see the beautiful photos that have a hint of fright you just can't appreciate what this talented man has accomplished. My favorite photo is the aerial shot of the town. The color, illumination of the houses and general feel of the scene is delightful. I loved searching out the frogs on the town street, the details of the main street scene and the castle at night is stunning!

Armchair Interviews says: On a Scary Scary Night: Can You See What I See? is the perfect Halloween read.

Editorial Review:

Co-creator of the popular I SPY series,Walter Wick is at it again. Mr. Wick dazzles the senses with spooky scenes that achieve new levels of aesthetic excellence! This book offers readers lots of search and find fun as they peer through pages and pages of brilliant photographic compositions looking for fascinating toys and objects.

This highly collectable book is a must.

Very Solid Book... 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

As an avid poker player (I play at least 5 hours a week) who makes decent money, I was looking forward to this edition. The problem with books these days is that there isn't much new material out there. Doyle wrote his supersystem which laid the groundwork for aggressive play which wasn't the norm back in the day. Then Harrington came out with his three volumes which are the definitive go-to for all no-limit holdem play.

If you want the best no-limit holdem book out there, then this probably isn't your book. The Harrington books trump this book by a long shot. However, if you're looking for a one-stop-shop for the other games then this is the answer. The only section that I felt was subpar was the section on Razz which gave very subpar advice, data, or basic strategy. The stud sections are excellent and lay very good groundwork for both cash and tournament play.

So...if you're only going to stick with NL holdem, then go with the Harrington books...if you're looking for a little bit of everything, then i highly recommend this book.

Kill Phil was a revolutionary poker manual -- its simplified yet potent strategies empowered even rank novices to compete against the world's best poker players.

Kill Everyone begins where Kill Phil left off. Its perfect blend of real-time experience, poker math, and computational horsepower combine to create nw concepts and advanced strategies never before seen in print for multi-table tournaments, Sit-n-Go's, and satellites.

Kill Everyone explains how to choose the right strategy for the right game, provides the proper tactics, and introduces new weapons into a tournament-poker-player's arsenal. These include:

* fear and fold equity
*equilibrium plays
bubble factors
endgame strategies
optimal heads-up play
and much much more!

Unlike Kill Phil, which was 90% pre-flop strategy, Kill Everyone goes all the way. In the end, you'll know how to accumulate chips early, navigate through the middle stages, and perfect your play on the bubble and at the final table.

Love these!

Out of date - there is a new game in town 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I hate to give such a great book a negative title and mediocre review but the fact is that this book is just no longer relevant. Had you bought this before the poker boom you would be golden. The best piece of advice you can get from this book is the basic theory. Other than that the whole book is geared around limit cash games. We all know that NL tournaments is where it is at right now so I would check out Dan Harrington's books first.

Editorial Review:

The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky discusses theories and concepts applicable to nearly every variation of the game, including five-card draw (high), seven-card stud, hold ’em, lowball draw, and razz (seven-card lowball stud). This book introduces you to the Fundamental Theorem of Poker, its implications, and how it should affect your play. Other chapters discuss the value of deception, bluffing, raising, the slow-play, the value of position, psychology, heads-up play, game theory, implied odds, the free card, and semibluffing.

Many of today’s top poker players will tell you that this is the book that really made a difference in their play. That is, these are the ideas that separate the experts from the typical players. Those who read and study this book will literally leave behind those who don’t, and most serious players wear the covers off their copies. This is the best book ever written on poker.
