Adventurer's Vault: A 4th Edition D&D Supplement

This is by par the best equipment book Wizard of the Coast has released for any version of Dungeons & Dragons. This book gave my gaming group pretty much everything it needed for magical equipment, mounts, new weapons and the ability to make alchemy items. A must have for any 4E D&D game!

Bland, so very bland 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I do not understand what Wizards of the Coast is thinking. You create specific settings like the Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk and Eberron so that you can create an unique experience out of playing in each world. But 4E removes all the unique aspects of a setting and blends in the stuff from other setting.

There is nothing in this entire book that says "This is the Forgotten Realms"! The art, the classes, the nations; nothing "feels" like the Realms. The book adds the Drow and the Gensai to playable races, but they give the Gensai a "World of Warcraft" makeover that renders them to silly to play.

Also, Aasimar, the divine planetouched race are now called Divas, once again proving that the 4E designers number 1 goal to destroy all conections with the Dungeons & Dragons that Gary Gygax created.

Too bad, that's the game I want to play.

Back into the Dungeon 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

First of all, a short introduction:
1. I'm not a native English speaker. Sorry for any mistakes.
2. I have been playing D&D since its 1st Edition. I have also played many other RPG games, including Warhammer 2nd Edition, Rolemaster, Paranoia, Runequest, Call of Ctulhu,...
3. Usually I was the Master/Director of the game, but other times I've played as player. I'd say the balance is somewhat in the 60% Master / 40% Player.
4. After many disappointments with previous editions of D&D and their business methods, I was cautious to try 4th Edition. Actually, I decided not to try it at all, and went on playing other games. Then, a friend came and said he had bought the gift set, and that we should give it a try:

Advantages:
- The combat system is really streamlined. The only times the rules of the game have to be "broken" is because of special powers. As you can have them in cards in front of you, you'll need to check the book during the game very few times.
- The flow of combat is very smooth. Any time you want to do something, the rules are intuitive, and no rule seems to be "strange".
- Because of the above, you are able to simulate battles with incredibly complex terrain (I'm now remembering a memorable one with some Kobolds in our last session).
- As every class has the same number of special powers/tricks at each level, everybody has something important to think about almost at any time; nobody feels completely out or doing repetitive things. Nobody has "just to roll dice" or to do the same trick over and over.
- No unfair hit point system. In previous editions you felt crippled when your character rolled low on his/her hit points.
- Skill system much better. Still, I don't find it as nice as in d100 games such as Warhammer, Call of Ctulhu,... but it's not the ridiculous system of previous editions... anyone remembers the "blind" Fighter?

Disadvantage
I have seen none yet (though I must say I have not played this game as much as previous editions). Maybe that you'll need to use miniatures if you want to make use of the nice new combat rules (I love miniatures anyway, but I guess for some people this can be a bad thing).

Advantage or Disadvantage? (this will depend on your style)
- The rules are there to make combat interesting and streamlined but, will that detract from the roleplaying experience?
- Well, the role aspect of the game is still clearly there. I always thought that this aspect does not depend so much on the basic rules but on the scenario the DM decides to direct (and D&D had always a huge selection of scenarios), and on how interested are the players on the role aspects of the game.
- The game can be clearly played as a normal boardgame, and in this sense it will attract a lot of computer players out there. In my opinion, this is a good thing, as I think it will attract more gamers to the pen-and-paper RPGS and maybe some of them will also discover the joy of the roleplaying aspect. Others are angry that Hasbro-Wizards tried this out, but I think that's just an elitist opinion.

Well, all in all, I'm quite pleased with the game so far, and I've even decided to buy it myself and direct an scenario or two with my friends. I wish Hasbro good luck with it, and hope that they'll try to keep with this edition more time...no 4.5 edition at least in 4-5 years, please!

Nicely improved 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I think this DM Screen is much improved over those of the past. It's a nice four-panel screen, allowing for lots of coverage and has a low profile. The art is great and finished in a nice gloss and the stock for the screen is quite thick and sturdy. I was really impressed, not only with the quality of the screen, but also over what an improvement it was/is over DM screens of the past.

There is also a lot of good information on the inside of the screen which is referenced to a book and page number if you need to go to the material source or an errata.

Editorial Review:

Official Dungeon Master's screen for the 4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons® Roleplaying Game

This four-panel cardstock screen features new full-color artwork and allows Dungeon Masters to keep their campaign notes and die rolls private, without blocking their view of the game table. Easy-to-reference rules and tables appear on the inside panels of the screen; these are designed for the Dungeon Master's eyes only and comply with the rules in the 4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons core rulebooks.

mediocre edition mediocre play 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I am currently playing in a 4th edition game. This book is a boring read in comparison to older edition works. At least 50% of this volume is comprised of "powers" for the classes. Heavy emphasis on streamlining every single class to operate like the next one. While combat runs pretty slick the character of the game leaves me uninspired.

Unleash the Force and fight the Empire.

The Emperor has swept away the last vestiges of the Old Republic. Darth Vader and his dark apprentice hunt down the surviving Jedi one by one, but a few escape capture and find refuge on backwater worlds. Fewer still reach deep into the Force, unleashing powers beyond their wildest imaginings. Meanwhile, other brave heroes rise to oppose the tyranny of the Empire, heralding the birth of the Rebellion.

This campaign guide draws its inspiration from The Force Unleashed, a revolutionary new video game from Lucasfilm, Ltd. It presents a complete campaign setting during the period between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope. The guide offers exciting new character options and Force powers for players as well as adventure content, campaign seeds, and ready-to-play adversaries for Gamemasters.

This supplement is designed for use with the Star Wars Roleplaying Game Saga Edition core rulebook.

The Realms are Dead 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Forgotten Realms has been a favorite fantasy setting of mine forever now. This latest edition is an abomination of all previous incarnations of the Realms. Ed Greenwood - how could you possibly condone your name being associated with this farce in any way? I actually feel gutted, disgusted, lifeless - and oh those are 3 words that can summarize the 4th edition of the realms. But if you'd like more, read on.

All of the color, the mystery, the excitement, the lore, the flavor, the history, the peoples, the locations, the empires, the wondrous places - all - GONE! All because the Spellplague (a.k.a WOTC money plague) was created and WOTC decided that a complicated setting was too much for their new target audience - 9-12 yr olds. How is this justified? Well, Wizards say that now you have all the control, you create the lands as you see fit for your campaign, you populate them and decide what monsters and heroes are a part of them. If I wanted that, I wouldn't pay good money for it, I would just make my own generic world to be populated by cookie-cutter NPC's - oh wait a second - that's just what this is! So people like Lady Alustriel, Szass Tam, Manshoon, Kheben Blackstaff, and many, many others are now simply background material if mentioned at all. Supposedly this is to allow the PC's to be stars of the show without such high-level NPC interference. Let me tell you something - I have been in many Realms based campaigns. I have been in games where NO and I mean NO high level NPC's of Faerun EVER come in contact with the PC's. So, if you are in a campaign where the adventure party is constantly having to report to Elminster for every minor orc they defeat or track they find and he then tells them exactly what it means, or the adventurers are in Thay and come across Szass Tam (even though they are 4th level, out of heals/spells, no magic items and have just fought a army of wraiths, ghouls, zombies, and other undead fiends) and are total party killed/wiped out - or even sillier - Drizz't Do"Urden "mysteriously" appears in Chult where the party is to help the struggling PC's out - YOU HAVE A TERRIBLE DM WHO IS RUNNING THE GAME WRONG - don't blame the setting for your horrible experience!!!.

Many other posts have touched upon other numerous terrible attributes of this book - the pantheon makes no sense, deities gone for no reason, others ascended for even more obscure reasons, fewer pages but higher price, the map is terrible, etc.

Stay far, far, away from this. The Realms are Officially Dead! Product Suicide by WOTC. Do not spend one cent on any more of their 4th edition B.S. MMORPG wanna be product. I would give negative stars if I could. One is way too generous.

A setting that I once felt rivaled that of even Middle Earth in its wonder and creativity itself is no more. Thanks WOTC for ruining a beautiful world and taking advantage of your loyal fan base. For shame!
