Missing some thngs 4 out of 5 stars.

Most of the info in the book seems to be accurate. There are a couple spots in the game that I had to look some manuevers up online because the book either wasn't clear or omitted certain instructions. Again, for the most part the book is a lifesaver! :-)

This product includes an adventure booklet for the Dungeon Master, a player's booklet containing new character options and campaign information, and a full-color poster map, all contained in a handy folder.

A must have for experienced players (and an inexpensive way for new players to give the game a try) 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The Clone Wars Starter Set is the fifth starter set for the Star Wars Miniatures game. This starter set comes with six figures (more information on the figures is presented below). You can also buy the Clone Wars boosters to add significant variety to the game (there are 40 additional figures in the Clone Wars minis set - and this is the 11th booster set for the Star Wars minis game). I'll try to write more about the Clone Wars boosters in a separate review, but the rest of this review focuses on the four key reasons why I gave this starter set five stars.

First, each starter set comes with the same six fixed figures, including three light side figures (General Obi-Wan Kenobi, Clone Trooper Commander, and Clone Trooper), and three dark side figures (Count Dooku of Serenno, Security Battle Droid, and Super Battle Droid Commander). The Obi-Wan and Dooku figures are exclusive to the starter set (which means you can't get them anywhere else). Both of these exclusive figures have amazing stats, special abilities, and force powers (and Obi-Wan also has a super commander effect), so they are definitely worth adding to your collection. And, while the other four figures are available in previous sets, I very much appreciate the fact that you know exactly what you are getting up front. IMPORTANT NOTE: There is a misprint on Obi-Wan's card. Soresue Style Mastery says "When hit by an attack...," but it should say "When hit by a MELEE attack..." (this has been confirmed by the game's creator, so be sure to check out the glossary in the new rule book for the correct wording).

Second, and perhaps just as importantly, this set includes two great new maps ("Christophis" on one side, and "Freight Transit Station" on the other side). To me, these two new maps alone are worth the entire price of the starter set (i.e., since the map you pick and play on can influence the game as much as the figures you chose to play with -- and both of these maps are very melee figure friendly). At the time this review was written there was no other way to get these maps except to purchase this starter set.

Third, the starter set also contains a book with the quick start and advanced rules (and both are very easy to understand). Further, the Glossary at the end contains the latest definitions for all key words, special abilities, and force powers for every set released up to this point (i.e., the only place all of this information is located in one convenient location).

Fourth, the set also includes a D20, force/damage counters, and pretty much everything you'll need to play. So, if this is the very first Star Wars minis item you are purchasing, you will still be able to have a fun game right out of the box.

In sum, I think most experienced players will want to purchase this starter set for the exclusive figures and the two maps. However, if you are new to the game and just want to give it a try, this is a very inexpensive and reasonable way to do so.

Know what you're paying for... 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I hate these sealed package products, especially when you can't find what you're buying. This is for all you other folks like me.

What you get in this pack are six double-sided pages of thick cardstock with a plasticy finish. No adventures or anything else--just map bits. Some of them are cut into 2x4" or 2-8" strips, with other bits that have groups of boulders or other terrain on them. The idea is to mix and match them Tetris-style to make a variety of maps. Presumably you could also use them with another forest map, but the thick stiff cardstock makes it so they wouldn't blend well--it's really thick. You could still make color copies of them though, cut out the bits you want, and keep the originals pristine for future use.

Another problem is that about half the cards are dominated by pretty exotic stuff that would be less useful for general purposes: an 8x8 circle of druid stones, hunting lodge floorplan, campsite or big round room filled with hay and bones. The campsite is alright, but the others are way too specific for my preference--determining the adventures you can do rather than giving you tools to run the adventure you want. Now there's still plenty of good stuff. Just about everything that is strange or difficult to use has some perfectly normal foresty grassland on the opposite side--and there's enough variety to the cards that you could just lay down the forest tiles, rotate and swap them periodically and you'd be fine. There are a couple of strange ones that would be a little tough to use in a normal game, like a gargoyle statue, a graveyard, a gypsy wagon, a giant's thighbone, scattered adventuring gear, a full giant's skeleton, a wrecked wagon, and...horses?? More of them are perfectly good and useable than that are odd, however.

One big advantage of the cards is that because they're in peices you can move characters along, laying cards down in the direction they move and pulling away ones where they've been. Especially if you buy a few of the same pack of map bits you could fill a full table with forest terrain and flip some cards over and switch them around and the characters could explore forever. It's a novel idea and I like it.

It really is a lot better than I was expecting. Certainly my first review of them was a bit unfair. I actually hadn't turned the tiles over to see that they were printed on both sides. Yeah, that made a difference. Boy, do I feel kinda' dumb.

Editorial Review:

This wonderful product adds a new dimension to D&D games and gives Dungeon Masters an easy-to-use and inexpensive way to include great-looking terrain in their games.

This set provides ready-to-use, configurable dungeon and wilderness tiles of various shapes. There are six double-sided sheets of illustrated, die-cut terrain tiles printed on heavy cardstock.

Better quality than previous boosters 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The figures in the new booster have greater detail and more accurate paint jobs than in previous packs. I've had good success in getting new figures in each pack. The creativity of design is fun to see - armor and shields have terrific detail and patterns, wings are better textured and even the ugliest beasts have vivid color and character depth.

Particularly good, in my amateur opinion, are the Angel of Valor, Ascendant Hellsword, and the Bugbear Headreaver (holding a reaved head, of course). Even the orc raider has a battered shield.

The new packaging makes it easier to get everything out, but it is extremely difficult to open the boxes without completely mangling them.

The Good and the Bad 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Let's first start out with the good about the set, which outnumbers the bad. First of all, a lot of the new minis are very good looking, especially the ones that make use of the clear plastic. Noteworthy minis include the Angel of Vengeance, the Blazing Skeleton, Doresain, the Ghoul King, the Death Titan, the Fire Titan, and others. Another good aspect of the set is that it adds epic play back into the game. The product is moderately priced, being fair in my opinion, if you buy it here or somewhere else for less than its retail price. The cards keep their fairly good layout and sharp appearance with the new epic cards being a mustard color rather than a maroon one. Its an odd choice in colors but it works. There are a lot of neat ideas in this set, many of which I hope get carried into other sets.

Now on to the bad. The first bad thing is the large amount of repeats this set has. While they are slightly different, there are repeats from other sets like the Boneclaw Impaler, the Elder Red Dragon, the Xorn Ravager, a third Owlbear incarnation, another Roper, and many others. Another thing is the fact that there are no dragonborn in this set that are not rares, making players who are seeking a dragonborn mini to have to get lucky, buy many packs, or spend $$ on singles. Lastly, the paint job on a lot of the minis are terrible (Storm Giant Thunderer is abhorrent). Plastic is still lower quality than some older sets.

If I could I would have given this product a 3.5, but I can't so I am giving it a 4. The product is generally solid overall, but many of the aspects of former sets that made them truly good falls short here.
