Not as it seems in the review .... 2 out of 5 stars.
35 of 43 people found this review helpful.

I am a huge fan of brain teaser books. I have a huge collection of these types of book. BUT after reading this book I say that this book is not as good as it seems in the review. If you think that you will find many Logical and mathematical riddles, this isn't the book for you, but on the other hand if you are into word games this might be a great book for you .

Wonderful fun! 5 out of 5 stars.

I just adored this book and enjoyed every single puzzle in it. As one reviewer points out, this is a book for word puzzle enthusiasts. It might be compared to Will Shortz's "Puzzlemaster Presents" series. What I love about this book is that it can be done without the aid of a dictionary, as it uses a vocabulary from common cultural literacy (e.g. types of candy bars, etc.). I also appreciate the fact that the references aren't dated like some game books are, which can lead to frustration when I am asked to rely on my knowledge of stars from the eighties. Overall, I simply loved this book for the accessible but challenging fun it provided. I hope that Mr. Battaglia will be gracing us with another book of this type soon!

Editorial Review:

Are You Smart, or What? is the most entertaining book of word games, ever! It combines clever challenges and surprising answers with playful innovations to both amaze and amuse readers of all ages. All puzzles are concise and uncomplicated. They are about ordinary words and things that everybody knows about so the entire family can enjoy them.

22 of 25 people found this review helpful.

So You Think You're Smart: 150 Fun And Challenging Brain Teasers compiled by Pat Battaglia is an eclectic collection of queries and riddles to boggle the mind, from sports trivia to word games to graphical puzzles. Each conundrum has hints and solutions, written in reverse to avoid casual reading yet easily looked up with the aid of a small paper-thin mirror that doubles as a handy bookmark. Ideal for parties or simple personal enjoyment, So You Think You're Smart is enthusiastically recommended as a fun and engaging selection of riddles to challenge readers of all educational backgrounds.

Editorial Review:

So You Think You're Smart is a delightful book of word games that the entire family can enjoy. All games are concise, uncomplicated and, most of all, a lot of fun. They are about ordinary words and things that everybody knows about so only common knowledge and a bit of resourcefulness are needed to solve them.

The games are only one of the fun features. All answers are encrypted! Each is given on the same page as the game, but is printed upside-down and backward - as in a mirror image. To ensure that they cannot be accidentally read, the answers are further obscured by using italics and a reduced size type. A mirror is needed to reveal the answers - and a special unbreakable plastic one is provided with each book.

Wonderful! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a necessity for anyone who visits WDW. We have been 11 times now, and thought we knew everything. WRONG. We had more much fun on this last trip using this book than ever before.

If you look around at WDW, everyone is hurrying, running, to get to the "next" thing. What you may not realize is that every step IS the next thing.

WDW is not just about shows and rides. It's all the little details that create the whole fun effect. We had never even stopped to read all the handprints in front of The Great Movie Ride, examine the fountain in front of Muppet Labs, notice all the details inside Country Bear Jamboree, or a million other things. Treaure hunting gave this trip so much more and really made this trip more "magical" than ever.

Editorial Review:

Adding an extra dimension of fun to a Walt Disney World visit, the more than 100 treasure hunts in this book lead visitors to the many hidden gems in the theme parks, water parks, and resort hotels. The hunts are suitable for all ages and treasure-seeking abilities, from children and first-time visitors to eagle-eyed park veterans. Clues are presented in the form of questions and are ranked by difficulty level, with a challenge for everyone. Answers are provided in “locked treasure chests” in the back of the book. Readers must open the sealed "treasure chest" pages to reveal the answers, thus inhibiting peeking or accidental reading.

PERFECT FOR NEW CACHERS! 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

This book is perfect for people new to the hobbies of Geocaching and Letterboxing! We wish that we would have had this book when we began a few years ago. There is a ton of helpful information (to include acronyms, special types of hides, how to make a rubber stamp, etc.) all in a very easy to read format. In addition, there are areas to document your finds and other achievements. We bought a few copies of this book to give as presents, but will be keeping at least one and ordering more very soon. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! VERY PLEASED OVERALL!

Editorial Review:

Geocaching and letterboxing are all the rage! These two new pastimes offer a modern twist to the age-old scavenger hunt by combining a hike in the outdoors with the technology of a GPS unit and the joy of gift-giving and receiving. This user-friendly book captures the ins-and-outs of the geocaching and letterboxing world and gives tips for finding and packing a cache or box, using a GPS unit, reading a compass and carving a signature rubber stamp - plus, there is room to record memorable hunts. Treasure Hunt is a must-have book for all the fortune-seekers and adventure-loving families!

it's all about the journey there! 5 out of 5 stars.
53 of 59 people found this review helpful.

I've seen those ads for minivans with little monitors for passengers in the back seats to watch movies. Frankly, the idea of appals me! Don't our children also need a vacation from TV & movies? How much real life are they missing? How dull will our children's brains become, being force-fed with endless artificial stories?

"Are we there yet?" is a question rarely asked when you bring MILES OF SMILES along on your journeys. It is a good book for travellers, chock-a-block with things to do with eyes & brains. Thinking on the move, exercising the brain cells, learning to wrap the tongue around strange words, thinking inside the head, rather than passively, staring into space as someone else's ideas reel into the mind.

In my childhood, the only way we went on vacations was by family car. My mother was the driver, with my father navigating. To retain his sanity, he invented all sorts of brain teasing games. So, I was thrilled when I came upon Carole Terwilliger Meyers' handy little book MILES OF SMILES. It's perfect for a glove compartment or a seat pocket. I have, however, played many of these games with my kids on busses, trains, even 'planes.

MILES OF SMILES is a book that will let you think, use your brain, get to know your family. It has a whole slew of new games to play, which can be adapted to any age passengers. In the Introduction, Carole Terwilliger Meyers even gives parents a clue as to how to entice teenagers into the games.

Pick up a couple of copies of MILES OF SMILES - just in case you lose the first!

Good intro to this fascinating new sport 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 39 people found this review helpful.

I'd never heard of geocaching before so when I saw this interesting title I had to find out what it was about.

The idea is simple and sounds like a lot of fun, though, because basically, it's a game where people leave secret stashes of goodies hidden in places all over the world that you use your GPS system to find. The stashes typically contain things like CDs, DVDs, books, non-perishable food items, maps, inexpensive gifts and trinkets, and so on. Enthusiasts sometimes follow a trail of clues like an old treasure hunt to find the cache, in addition to using their GPS system. They can be buried in the ground in remote wilderness areas or left under a park bench in a city. There are caches in every U.S. state and many countries around the world, from England to Estonia. The book gives the GPS coordinates of each cache.

Since the game was invented a few years ago, it has rapidly evolved and many new variations have been invented, including geodashing, garmin games, geoteaming, hide and seek, just 4 openers, letterboxing, microcaching, minute war, multicaches, orienteering, poker run, project ape, tag, virtual caches, webcam caches, volksmarching, story cache, and something called the "stampin' fools game."

The book covers GPS basics as well as the history of the technology, and the chapters include GPS units, Creating Caches, Geo Games (which I just listed the names of above), Backcountry Safety and Etiquette, Geo Happenings, Clubs and Websites, and Cachinary 1.0.

The book has a forward by Dave Ulmer, the inventer of the sport, including the dramatic story of his snowmobile crash on Mt. St. Helens back in the days when the civilian GPS system accuracy was only 1/10 of what it is now--which was the reason for his crash. Because of that positioning error, he'd gotten into the chute right next to the one he was supposed to be in, which led to his crash.

Overall, this is an interesting, entertaining, and detailed introduction to the sport of geocaching that should be of interest to beginning and seasoned geocachers alike.

Editorial Review:

This book introduces the reader to the fast-growing outdoor sport of geocaching, which combines aspects of treasure hunting, high-tech navigation, and exploration.

No boredom--and your brain will thank you! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

In this day and age of constant visual and aural stimulation--marketing and advertising messages, music of all sorts, cellphones, PDAs, you name it--it's SO refreshing to see that not everyone has given up hope. Jim Gladstone is obviously someone who values the grey cells, and puts his talent as a writer where his quirky interests are. Not only is this book FULL of original and updated games that often require nothing more than what many of us had on-hand in first grade: a pencil, some paper, a little extra time and a sense of playfulness (okay, and maybe a little competitiveness, too), it's also beautifully designed, durable and very portable. Buy this book and keep it in your backpack, briefcase--whatever you drag your stuff around in. Next time you're stuck on a plane, bus or even your own car and your sick of listening to the garbage on the radio or watching the fluff on TV, pull out Gladstone's Games to Go and give your brain a much-needed workout. For parents who've had enough of GameBoys and giant headphones that keep your kids as alienated from you in the car or on a plane as they are at home, Gladstone offers some fun ways to interact that won't cramp the style of even the most jaded teen or tween. And for the rest of us who just like a good, challenging game now and then (and hate it when dinner party conversation starts to wane), you're CRAZY not to have this book at arm's reach.

Editorial Review:

No cards, no dice, no spinners -- no board! Join the fun as you learn to play more than 50 of the best word games, puzzle games, coin games, and more. Gladstone's Games to Go can be enjoyed with just a pencil, paper, and some commonly found objects (coins usually do the trick). Old classics like Battleship and Connect Four have been updated for more challenging play, while newer games like Doublet Racing and Initialist will test the skills of even the most experienced gamers.
Whether you're on a transcontinental plane ride, waiting for a movie to start, lounging on a beach, or sitting with friends in the coffeehouse, you're guaranteed to find the cure for boredom in these pages. Start playing today!
