Editorial Review:

For nine years, four books, and nearly 4,000 pages, Diana Gabaldon has entranced readers with her talent for historical authenticity, dramatic plot lines, and strong characters in the Outlander series. Her superb writing has earned a loyal audience, but after a million and a half words, even the most fervent of fans may have a difficult time trying to recall the exact details of the secondary characters, let alone the obscure ones. Thankfully, Gabaldon's The Outlandish Companion is here to help.

Part crib notes and part trivia guide, this essential handbook includes synopses of the first four novels, a character guide, notes on plot development and research, answers to frequently asked questions, and teasers for the upcoming novels--there're even horoscope charts of the central characters, a list of fan Web sites, and choice recipes for the truly devoted.

Readers looking for a fix of Gabaldon's humorous voice or insight into her writing processes and characters will certainly be more than satisfied, but those looking for the next installment of Jamie and Claire's adventures will have to wait for The Fiery Cross, the fifth book in this bestselling series, expected sometime in late 1999 to early 2000. --Nancy R.E. A Trivia Book Worthy of a 5 Star Review 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is awesome. For all who have ever played Star Wars Trivial Pursuit or any other game and wished there was more, here it is.

This book combines all types of trivia from all 6 movies, as well as E.U. information and real life info, i.e. actors and such.

This book, has, like it says, 2,500 questions. I was amazed at how different they are and how broad the spectrum runs for the questions. Some are short, easy to figure questions, such as changing the name of a character, where others are extremely difficult, like having to know what specific genome of a species a certain character is, or who a certain droid was from the movie.

I wholeheartedly believe this to be the best Star Wars trivia book out, and recommend it for both new Star Wars fans and hardcore fans that know every little nuance of the SW Galaxy.

Editorial Review:

Even the most die-hard Star Wars fans will find themselves challenged by this entertaining new approach to the details of the saga. This fourth volume in the popular addictive Obsessed With series again includes an innovative scoring module right in the book so a player can select questions by number or at random and keep score. With 2 500 original questions covering little known facts entertaining quotes and tough trivia from all six episodes Obsessed With Star Wars will have readers dominating the galaxy in no time.

Foodie Fight Wins Hands Down 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I recently attend a weekend cooking school where we played both Foodie Fight and the Trival Pursuit Game dedicated to food. Foodie Fight was much more fun, more interesting questions, better catagories and just the right difficulty. The school was attended by "foodies" and some new to cooking and all enjoyed the game. It's a winner!

Game review 4 out of 5 stars.

Had a lot of laughs over the game after Christmas dinner (gift to my daughter - a foodie)

fun game that stumped even consumate foodies! 5 out of 5 stars.

Saw this at xmas time and thought it would be a fun gift for a family member. I was worried that the questions would not be challenging enough being that the person is a consumate foodie, as is another family member who would be present during the holiday. We played the game and even they couldn't answer all the questions!
Game is designed really well, good variety of questions even for the novice foodie and I like how you can play a short game or a long game.
Good fun!

The men in my life LOVE the Bathroom Reader. I buy them for my husband who gives it to my Dad, then Dad gives it to my Brother, then my Brother gives it to our Brother-in-Law, and Lord only knows who he gives it too. I have never felt I've wasted money on Uncle John's Bathroom Readers. They are always interesting, perfectly suitable for a 30 minute sit-on. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Ken Jennings’s Trivia Almanac is the ingeniously organized book where, for a change, the all-time Jeopardy! champ gets to ask the questions–and where every day of the year will give you the chance to test your trivia mettle.

For example–February 21: In 1912, on this day, Teddy Roosevelt coined the political phrase “hat in the ring,” so Ken Jennings fires off a series of “ring” questions. What two NFL quarterbacks have four Super Bowl rings each?* What rings are divided by the Cassini Division?** Also on this date, in 1981, the “goth” music scene was born in London, so here’s a quiz on black-clad icons like Darth Vader, Johnny Cash, and Zorro. Do you know the secret identities of Ivanhoe’s Black Knight*** or Men in Black’s Agent M****?

In this ultimate book for trivia buffs and other assorted know-it-alls, the 365 entries feature “This Day in History” factoids, trivia quizzes, and questions categorized by Jennings as “Easy,” “Hard,” and “Yeah, Good Luck.” Topics cover every subject under the sun, from paleontology to mixology, sports feats to Bach suites, medieval popes to daytime soaps. This addictive gathering of facts, oddities, devilishly clever quizzes, and other flights of fancy will make each day a fun and intriguing new challenge.

Book Reading 5 out of 5 stars.

Found it to be an excellent book to give to the grandchildren to help answer their questions and curiosity of where things came from.

Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book has alot more pages then I expected it also is well organized. The author gave enough information on each subject to satisfy one's curiosity about a subject but not to the point of distraction, just enough to give the reader clarity on the subject matter. I'm not a youngster anymore and I knew some of the answers to the origins of everyday things but there was more in this book that I've never heard before. It doesn't cover just products but superstitions from whatever country they started. I've enjoyed it very much and would recommend it for those curious where some of our ideas and products originated long ago.

Excellent book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book. This is the third time I've bought it because I keep lending it to people who lend it to people, etc. Everybody likes to find out where things came from. Very interesting and great fun.

A Gentleman Entertains by John Bridges 5 out of 5 stars.
54 of 58 people found this review helpful.

"A Gentleman Entertains" takes a surprisingly unpretentious look at men entertaining, though the book is by no means without merit for women readers. The practical advice and simple, elegant recipes cover a broad range of entertaining scenarios, from casual cocktail parties at home to dining out, to family reunions. The South is perhaps the only place left where it is still fashionable to be genteel, and Bridges lives up to his Southern upbringing without coming across stuffy. Leaving no stone unturned, the book touches on everything from tipping to starting a charcoal grill to choosing the wine. Though the title suggests a certain level of sophistication, the author is just as quick to advise readers to use paper plates when the situation dictates as he is to recommend the proper way to garnish a cocktail. Bridges writing style is crisp and on the wry side, though he had more room to shine in "Keeping Up," a delightful series of essays on his upbringing in Slapout, Al., as well as witty observations on life and martinis. I would have liked to have seen him cut loose in this book a little more stylistically, but being the proper gentleman that he is, he wrote a respectable book suitable for any coffee table. It is a fine follow up to his previous outing, "How to be a Gentleman." I recommend it to anyone who is looking for the kind of practical advice on entertaining that bears repeating and never goes out of style.

Editorial Review:

Practical and unpretentious, A Gentleman Entertains includes

  • 15 essential preparations before entertaining
  • 100 things every gentleman should know about being a host
  • Ideas for twelve specific parties complete with more than 20 fool-proof recipes
  • Tips on dealing with inevitable, inescapable, really ugly disaster moments.
